 Olympic Chatting Thread?

  1 2 3 4 5  ...
Would anyone be interested in have a central location for chatting about the Olympics? We could have the admins sticky this for the duration of the Olympics?

I'm going to start anyhow, and worse case scenario I will just be chatting to myself about the Olympics!

So I think the rumour about Terry Fox's Dad carrying the torch into BC Place was just a rumour, pretty sure he just received the torch this morning.

Also watch Trevor Linden in an Olympic tracksuit was a sweet image to wake up to this morning!

I can't stop watching the torch relay online myself. Looks like I won't be getting much work done today.

And as much as I'm programmed to hate the Canucks, Trevor Linden is a pretty cool guy.

Oh no T&C a Canucks hater? I almost named my son after Trevor Linden, but friends of ours beat us to it!

So what is everyone's favorite sport to watch at the Olympics?

For me it is a tie between hockey and figure skating. But I pretty much love every sport!

stupid protest is stopping the relay. I know the olympics are a huge hassle to people who live in that city. But at the same time, it's only two weeks and we should be pround to have it in Canada. It also brings in a lot of revenu for a lot of businesses (just my opinion)

It really upset me that they had to reroute the run. On the original course, they were supposed to run by a bunch of veterans. Some people...

I'm waiting for the final leg of the torch today before it enters the stadium. It's going from Granville Island to a dragon boat and a voyager canoe and my co-worker (who organized this section of the relay) will be in the boat. We're actually broadcasting it at work so we can all see her.

I'm also excited for my training on Saturday, my first work shift on Tuesday and watching the open ceremonies tonight! I love watching the curling, figure skating, hockey...actually anything really! It's all good!

I gearing up for no sleep for the next 2 weeks as I live only 2 blocks from the Big party in Surrey! That plus work and all the concerts , eeeeeep So excited laugh

I'm glad that other people are as excited as I am.

that's an option tongueold

I think he'll be wearing his hockey jersey thoug h:p

I wasn't going to post this cause the guy put a shout out to my webpage on it (which could be considered vendor advertising blah blah blah)
But i'm going to anyway in this thread tongueold

The story:

I had seen the Torch come through my home town on Monday. Tuesday rolled around, and I wanted to experience it where i live now too (obviously!)

We headed down the road to get set up. I had learned that there were orange circles on lamp posts/trees etc. to signal where the torch exchanges hands. So we set ourselves up near one of those

When we got to the stop there was a few Coca Cola workers. They asked us if we knew John. - Torchbearer John was at our stop.
We had no idea who he was, but they asked if we'd hold a sign for him and cheer him on. ABSOLUTELY!!!! He came out, we cheered, he had an awesome time.

My friend thought the photos were awesome, and said that we NEEDED to find him and send them to him....

(pics here if you wanna see - http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=382845&id=561445182&l=c5e1829b87 )

She found his full name - so i started googling. I managed to find his cousin in San Francisco - he did a Tweet that day saying that his cousin would be carrying the torch...

i contacted the cousin to pass on the images and he... sent me this - http://play.goldmail.com/xqm2rhcuvdc6

even cooler?
He's pretty darn high up at Coca Cola - SOOOOOOOOOOOO COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

I am a total Olympic junkie. I will watch pretty much anything just because it is the Olympics.

My manager ran with the torch here in Calgary and we went to watch. It was pretty cool. I don't really remember much about the '88 Olympics so it's all pretty neat to me.

It said in one of the articles that Olympians had questioned the safety of the course. I thought that the course was too fast when they first built it and they had made adjustments to make it safer? If so, frightening that it's still -that- fast!

That was a horrific crash, and sadly not the first to happen at Whistler either. I really hope this doesn't cost him his life.

I would like to know what speed the corners are rated for, and/or if it was actually built to specifications. The only reason I question that is I know a few people in the construction trade who, if they don't understand why an engineer did something in the plan, they just don't do it, or they change it.

Nothing wrong with speed if you make the appropriate design choices. If you expect that speeds will be @ x given perfect conditions you make sure the track is safe to x+y speeds.
