So the protests have turned violent now. Why do these people think that their messages will be better received if they devolve into lunatics?

We're in lockdown mode at work now and I really hope I can go home tonight frown

where are you located?

From what I can hear on the news the protesters are ALL over downtown. Bay and King, cop cars are on fire, Queen street CP24 news windows smashed along with almost every other business. Eaton Centre is on lockdown, as protesters move north on Young Street.

I don't understand as well, why these people believe by being violent people will listen to them. No, i will not listen to you and your cause now that you are acting like idiots.

Stay Safe!!

Stay safe.

I think there were people who had messages to put out there and wanted to protest peacefully. Then these people in black, who seem to have no message and are just thugs are lighting fires and breaking everything in sight (store windows full of people etc). They are taking away every peaceful protestor's voice, and frankly, giving justification for all the police around. They just seem to want to create havoc.

This small(ish) group of people who are doing all of the damage represent a tiny portion of the protesters (and aren't even protesters, really). Thousands of people started protesting peacefully, and carried on peacefully back to Queen's Park.

I don't think this group is doing these things to raise awareness or get a message out. And if I understand correctly, they're not necessarily Canadian (though they may well be).

I've been watching CP24 this afternoon, and it's just insane. Burning cop cars, smashed windows, tear gas ... crazy. Living here, I obviously recognize all of the places I'm seeing on the news - but it seems like a completely different city.

Stay safe everyone who happens to be down there.

Chadsgirl, I really hope that your DH is okay.

I've been following this blog all day:
http://thestar.blogs.com/g20/

It's pretty interesting.

Blissful - I just sent you a message on FB.

Apparently there were shots fired at University and College and the 'Black Bloc' changed out of their black clothes into street clothes.

The thing that kills me is that there are cops EVERYWHERE but there doesn't seem to be any sort of law enforcement going on.

I'm thinking so much of my coworkers, who are in the middle of all of this.

The cops' duty is to protect the fence and the 'integrity' of the G20. This is why they aren't advancing on the protesters who are smashing store windows and setting fires to cars.

They apparently put several 'older' cruisers on the street purposefully, in hopes of luring the protesters to damaging those instead of damaging barriers to the G20. It seems to have worked, thus far.

Yay! The Ontario Federation of Labour apparently did exactly what I wish more of the protestors would do---they got between the jerk "protestors" and the cops and told them to move on. There are 10,000 intelligent protestors. I wish they'd turn on the maybe 1000 jerks and put them all in their place.

One question my FH and I have been batting around

What do these people do for in real life? Is participating in the violent protest worth arrest, risking injury, facing jail time and having a record for life?

My example is the ones that were arrested for the molotov cocktails in their car. A friend of my ex's got mixed up with some guys who killed some kids via a molotov cocktail thrown into an apartment. He was charged as an accessory and I think he's still in jail. He had a good life and now it's all gone to pot. What if one of these protesters hurts/kills a cop or another protester?

FH was part of the peaceful protest with the union (labour movement activists) today. He is unbelievably pissed off that their peaceful protest has turned into this. Their message will never be remembered but the violence of a few a$sholes will be.

Luckily as soon as they saw how out of control those individuals were getting, their group got as far away from them as possible and started making their way home. It's so disappointing for the labour movement as they worked for months to set this up. Working not only with their own groups, but working with police to make sure they had a route planned and that everyone involved was aware that their group would be completely peaceful.

He also mentioned that from what he could see the police were doing a fantastic job. Once again those few bad "protesters" give real peaceful protesters a bad name. It's disgusting what they are doing and for no gain.

Wow, I had no idea this was going on! I've been out all day and so this is the first I'm hearing about it (have the news flipped on now). This whole situation makes me really sad. The violence from a small group just takes so much away from the many legitimate reasons to be protesting these meetings and critiquing the G8/G20, and the thousands of legitimate, peaceful protestors that are now not having their voices heard. The media coverage just becomes all about the violence and not about the issues.

I feel very strongly that violence actually hurts the protest movement. I don't know if these people carrying out the violent acts don't realise or if they just don't care. Really sad.

I actually had no idea until the other thread (yay!) that black bloc is a tactic, not a group. They seem to be associated with anarchists ... but is that really a group when the idea is that you object to organization?

Boo for them ruining the good bits. BUT ... why isn't CBC covering more of the real protestors? Why are they just showing us the violence and the cops chasing people? There are so many great stories that really, really need press time and instead they're giving all the airtime to people who don't deserve it. And then talking about how these are the guys who get all the coverage. *sigh*
