 My brother's dog is FOUND!

  1 2 3 4
My brother and his fiance were flying from Hamilton to Saskatoon though Calgary for their wedding here this weekend. They brought their dog on the flight (a young Shiba Inu). Apparently when they were transferring in Calgary, somehow their dog got out of his crate while in the care of the airline staff and now he's running around the airfield! My FSIL (and my brother) is understandably distraught. They've missed their flight here, and they still don't have their dog back frown I have no idea what they are going to do. Because it's out on the actual airfield they can't even go out to call him back. I feel so bad for them, I can't even imagine. I would be absolutely freaking out and heads would be ROLLING if that was one of my dogs!

omg I don't even know what to say!
It's for THEIR wedding THIS weekend?!?!

Talk about stressful!

However, i know YVR is surrounded by fences for security reasons... I'd expect Calgary to be the same.. so at least the dog wouldn't be able to get out, right?

Best wishes for a speedy retrieval of their pooch frown

OMG!!!! I'd be sooo stressed out if this was one of my dogs. We used to travel with them via air many times. Its stories like this that just break my heart and make me second guess air travel unless its in the cabin.

I am sending out good dog vibes for your bro's pup. Please keep us updated.

Did they get their dog back?

No update yet. I think they called things off last night after about midnight because it was dark. I don't know how they're going to get him back- it's a huge airport! And my brother and SIL can't go out to call him back, so I doubt he'll go to anyone else.

And it is their wedding this weekend frown If anything happens to that little guy, they will be devastated and it will ruin their wedding frown frown

OMG..I would freak out! With that said, I always lock my dogs crate when travelling with her for this reason (whether it be opened by accident or airline personnel opening for fun or something. Hope they get him back safely soon.

I hope they get him back soon!

There was an incident not long ago with a cat getting out at Pearson in the baggage sorting area thanks to WestJet and some @sshat baggage handlers. But it DID end happily, so *fingers crossed* today brings pup safely back to your Bro & SIL!

OMG I am so so sorry!! I am off to the airport today and I will take a look around as I drive. Shiba's are fast, if they have a pic, I will gladly print some posters and put them up, I live 10 mins away from the airport.

I was super worried when we flew with our dog, as he is an escape artist and a runner. I actually printed a large warning sign on his crate that stated "do not open my door unless a medical emergency. I am a very scared dog and will run if given the chance" I also warned the attendants who took him. West Jet was fantastic and actually let us keep him with us till the very last minute, and then brought us to a window that let us view him being loaded up, and let us board the plane late so we had a chance to make sure he was ok.

Fingers crossed everything turns out ok.

OMG whats the pups name? I drive by the airport to and from work! The first thing that came to my mind are coyotes. The area is fenced but I am still worried! There is a little area to pull off of and watch the planes go and land I will stop there tonight to see if I see anything!

I am praying for you! if you could post a pic that would be good aswell.

I would also suggest calling the SPCA to see if they found the little guy you never know. He might of been able to sneak out somewhere.

PM me if you need anything else! I would be devastated if this happened to me! I can not imagine what your bro and FSIL are going through.

I really hope for their sake and their dog's sake, and for the wedding, that their puppy is found safe and sound. My heart breaks for them.

Losing a dog on an airplane or at the airport never even crossed my mind as being possible. I also can't believe the airline's reaction (or lack there of). Guess it will be only roadtrips for me and my dog from now on.

I can't believe they lost him. OMG, that's insane! One good thing is the area is fenced...so he's got to be around there somewhere. I can't imagine how scared the little guy is.

I'll tell my Dad to keep an eye out for him as well. He likes to watch the planes land and lives not too far from there.

One thing you might want to do, this may seem weird, but STARS has a hanger right on the airfield...they've got access to the area around them. Maybe ask if they're taking flights back in and happen to see him to let someone know. They might mistake him for a coyote and ignore him....or...he might wander into their hanger and someone might keep him. DH use to work for STARS...I've been in the hanger, but wasn't allowed to cross the yellow line in the hanger because I wasn't cleared to be in the airport space. The STARS office/call centre/hanger is in the SW corner of the airport.

I can't remember the name of the other air service in the NW corner, they've got a hanger there that does private charters. He might be hungry and looking for food too so a little more willing to see people.

No update frown They still haven't seen her today as far as I know. My brother and FSIL decided to fly to Saskatoon this afternoon because they need to be around to finalize wedding stuff for this weekend. They couldn't do much in Calgary anyway. Apparently it was a West Jet flight and they have two guys driving around the airport grounds looking for her. They said they would keep it up until she is found and they could have stayed in a hotel as long as they wanted (covered by West Jet) so that's a good thing I guess. They did let my brother out last night to try to find her but she was already gone in the dark.

Thanks for the help, I just want more than anything to get their puppy back to them by their wedding this weekend frown Their wedding will be completely ruined otherwise frown frown frown

To top it all off, my dad is being his typical self- he doesn't "get" the whole loving a pet thing. He thinks that they shouldn't freak out, they can always get another dog, they should have brought it in the first place, etc etc. Last night I had to bite my tongue while he went on about how people should not spend money on animals and instead be spending money on needy people (as if he is spending any time and money on humanitarian efforts!). Argh. I know he will have said some of this to FSIL and my brother when they picked them up at the airport and that will NOT have helped things at all!

Anyway, here's a picture of AYUMI from January. She was born in the fall I think, so she's not a year old yet.

All I know is that my FSIL was watching them unload her and saw the crate open and her run out. She was running around for a good couple of hours when they actually could see her- at one point the airport staff had cornered her by a pond and she actually jumped in it and swam across to get away. She must be terrified frown I'm scared about the coyotes too- and the airport people said there are definitely places that dogs could escape the fence.
