spinny - why are you scared?

the trypophobia (sp?) thread got me thinking.
why are you scared of what you're scared of?
was it a traumatic experience? is it because it's just icky?

so, share your phobia and why you're scared of it?

and a poll to boot.

I'm terrified of bugs. The first time I ever saw a cockroach, it was crawling up my leg in my bed. I've been terrified ever since. It's also extended to spiders.

I have a fear of heights, but I have no idea why. And it is pretty strong. I have trouble climbing a foot stool.

I am scared of spiders...like really really scared of them! I think it comes from my mom not liking them much either, so I grew up always avoiding them. A large spider...or even a smallish one could make me loose my cool immediately!

Hmmmm...I think I'm definitely more of a wuss since my LO came along. I used to be able to watch the craziest horror movies and not be totally phased and now I have some serious issues...like need hubby to come to sleep with me or watch something happy for a bit in order for it to clear.

Phobias:

Balloons - don't like them popping
HATE snakes - something about a creature with no arms or legs that can still move like the dickens and kill you! lol
Cockroaches - lived in an apartment that we discovered had them, totally skeeved me - but we got rid of them!!

This is more of an anxiety but I dislike not being in control of my feet in like rollerblades, skates, skis, etc. It's a control thing.

I have a phobia of anything with more then four legs! So spiders and those super fast hairy looking bugs (there was a thread on them a while ago) with a million legs freak me out! I scream when I see those or spiders and I can't kill them because I'm terrified they'll climb on me while I'm trying to kill it. I don't like how quickly they move!

I also remember one summer night something tickling my arm and for some weird reason I turned on the light and it was a quarter size black spider climbing on my arm! I couldn't fall back asleep after that!

Here's an ironic thing too, my great-uncle used to call me spider as a nickname for some reason!

for me, I'm afraid of bridges. I *think* it results from when I almost drowned when I was almost 5, but I can't really remember if the bridge fear started before or after the almost drowning incident. I have a fear of falling off the side. It's irrational. I find it hard to even drive over them but it doesn't actually stop me from driving over them. I just have a slight silent freak out while I'm driving or walking over it.

The irony of the whole thing is that my DH is a structural engineer who designs bridges.

Well, I hate to do it (for obvious reasons) but I just had to select 'Other' here. The reality is that I don't have any phobias that I can identify. No fears that I consider irrational, even.

The closest I come is an aversion, an apprehension, to making myself socially 'available'. I'm 27 now, and FW was/is my first girlfriend. We met 3 years ago. And it applies to all people I see. In real life, I'm not precisely a recluse, but it generally takes a lot to get me to talk to strangers. Once I know them, I'm fine... Though I still do my own thing and not the group thing, most times.

(WB and their ilk don't count. This sort of interaction is less personal. Safer, I suppose. Much easier to open up.)

Dogs and spiders.

Dog because when I was 2 this huge dog ran me over and trampled all over me. Apparently I am better than I used to be though. When out for walks with my Mom, if I could even see a dog up ahead-no matter how many blocks away-I would go into a cold panic and just scream until she would cross the road to keep me away from the dog.

Spiders because about 11 yrs ago I was bitten by a poisonous spider (here in Victoria of all places!) and I almost lost my right hand completely.

I hate Jack-in-the-Box things that you wind the side up and out pops a freaky looking clown thing. I also hate balloons because I jump when they pop.

ETA: And I'm scared of heights and flying. I get sweaty palms just talking about flying.

I'm afraid of water- comes from a traumatic experience when I was a child.

Part of the fear is bridges like brighteyes - but mostly the fear is most prominent when I'm in water and can't touch bottom or in a boat.

I don't have any phobias or fears that stop me from doing things but I absolutely hate elevators. I was never really comfortable in them and then I got stuck in one with DH for a few minutes but what seemed to be an eternity for me I was so freaked out. After that, I refused to use elevators which was difficult since I was living in Toronto at the time. I walked up and down to our 14th floor aparment daily until I got pneumonia and was forced to rely on the elevator until I got my strength back.

Now we live in the Seattle area and I don't come into contact with elevators much. When I do, I use the stairs unless I'm with DD and have no choice. I hate using them even more here because it is an earthquake zone and for some reason I think it will happen when I'm in the elevator.

I also don't like flying but will do so. I never had that fear before, it developed out of nowhere for no reason. I've had quite a few uncomfortable flights since but I'm happy to say that since I've had DD, my fear is getting better. I feel I must be brave for her so she doesn't sense my fear and develop it herself.

I'm terrified of spiders and have no idea why.

I can't remember anything traumatic happening but I did grow up in an area that had tons of dock spiders.

My fear also seems to be getting worse as time goes by even though I'm not exposed to spiders near as big as back then.

Claustrophobic.
Didn't really realise this because hey i can ride the elevator with no problem but when i was put in the machine for an MRI I had a panic attack. It was terrible. I kept trying to breathe and tell myself it was ok but it felt so tight and airless I just started crying and screaming. The worst part (ha) was that they ask you before hand if you feel that way and if you need a tranquilizer and of course I said no not me!.
I was so freaked out i couldn't even get in a car to go home. I WALKED for over an hour until I calmed down.
Hope I never have to have one of those again (or that if i do I'm unconscious)

My mom put the fear of flying into my head. Weirdest thing but I can remember her saying how she is afraid to fly because you are stuck on the plane and can't just get off when you want. Now I have that same fear!

I'm afraid of flying. I've managed to get things under control to a reasonable extent, but I really hate it.

One thing that resonated with me is that I read once that phobic flyers are likely to have very good imaginations. They can picture horrible details in clear, perfect ways, and wind themselves up imagining horrifying scenarios. That describes me perfectly. I think the fact that I can vividly conjure up some horrific event is the major factor in my fear.

I have a snake phobia, though it has been getting MUCH better. Heck, I can even GO to DJ's house now even though I can't bring myself to look at Thor.

It started with my sister's nanny when I was 5. She used to tell me scary snake stories. I'm not sure why but that's when I developed the fear. It got 10x worse when I was 12 and saw a massive python during our school's international day. No one told me there was one in the Gr.5 class and I walked in, saw it, froze, it looked at me, I screamed and fainted. Next thing I knew, I woke up in my own classroom. That was that.

At least now I'm able to say the word. There was a point when I couldn't even bring myself to say the word.

I'm trying to work up my courage to look at Thor. Right now I can sit on the couch near the tank but can't look at it. Who knows... maybe with time, I'll even learn to be ok with snakes just not like them.

Okay so get this. I'm afraid of butterflies. No joke.

I can sit here and tell you all day long how harmless I know they are. But the rational side of me can not negotiate with the irrational one. I know where the fear came from. Apparently when I was under two, I'd be lying in bed and a housefly would land on me and I'd freak out. My mom says I would be terrorized and was calling them butterflies, so she figures my little head confused them and voil, there's a phobia.

Some are worse than others. I can tolerate some within a few metres. But if they're orange and black ( la Monarch) I'm done. Done done. Like running and screaming done.

Such an embarrassing one, too. Ugh. I don't normally share this, but I figure, WTH, there have got to be other people with odd phobias like this out there.

Well, now that you mention these things, I will mention the one night I spent in northern Bali in a very basic thatch-roof hut. It was hot, and I only had a thin sarong as a bedsheet. Anyway, I got not one, but two cockroaches fall from the thatch directly onto my stomach during the course of the night. Startled the heck out of me both times.

But I'm not scared of them.

I have a horrible fear of spiders. I'm pretty sure the reason for it is because I saw arachnahobia when I was like 6. I am also have a fear of death. I don't think it's from any experience, just the not knowing. I think about death on a daily basis and always think of possible ways that could possibly kill me. I may be at the point where I actually need help with that fear.

I am scared of snakes and most reptiles. My friend used to have a little iguana and would let it loose and it got me really scared of them. Also mice! ugh they are so tiny and just freak me out. Sharks are another one (watched to many shark movies). I get pretty nervous swimming in lakes, oceans because I dont like the fact that you won't know whats underneath you most of the time. Also the dark, I have gotten alot better but when DH is on night shift and I am alone I get alittle freaked out.

I don't have anything that's a proper phobia any more but I'm definitely hesitant around heights, particularly ladders. I definitely have a vivid and active imagination, like this:

-Dark lake water or anything swamp like. Long story short my cousins threw me from a boat when I was young and I remember opening my eyes underneath and seeing all the weeds and slime and huge fishes.

-The dark (I think I have dark issues here). DH freaks on me b/c I will not sleep in the dark! This happened from something when I was small, i seen something (could have been nothing) but the image never left.

I am deathly afraid of birds and cats. I beleive them stem from 2 separate times. My dad used to let our budgy bird fly around the house and it used to try to land on my head, from then on I am scared of birds landing on me or attacking me out of the blue. My aunt had a cat that was vicious and you couldn't make any sudden moves around it or it would pounce with it's claws drawn. Needless to say they eventually had the cat put down but only after I spent a long fearful summer visiting them!

Fish & small spaces - When I was younger, I fell head first into a bunch of fish that my dad had caught and were on a chain in the lake. So being young, getting caught in all the movement and not being able to get out...explains why I'm afraid of fish and why I'm claustrophobic. I actually had no idea about this story until my mom found out I was phobic about fish just a couple years ago.

Clowns - I have no idea where this comes from, maybe I need to talk to my mom again! laugh First clown I ever saw I started screaming at. When my mom took me to the circus and her friend who was a clown, brought all his clown friends over, I was hysterical. Poltergiest and IT didn't help matters at all. Yet, I had a Frere-Jacque doll with the wind-up nose growing up. I still avoid clowns. If you put a clown at the end of a hall and told me to either walk around it to get to the elevator or walk down 50 flights of stairs. I'd take the stairs.

Spiders - Wake up to a HUGE spider on your pillow and you develop a fear of them. laugh You can't hear them coming, they're just there, they can happen anywhere, they bite and they've got way too many legs. DH doesn't trust people with two first names, I don't trust things with more than 4 legs. laugh
