 What's your favourite fruit?

  1 2
And don't say apples....

Yes, this is kind of a lame thread but I just had an ataulfo mango (the yellow kind) and I LOVED it. I had had one of the red mangoes years ago and decided that all mangoes tasted like a pine tree and never really tried again.

I want to get more adventurous with my produce so let me know what your favourite fruit is outside of the regular apple, orange, strawberry 'box'. What does it taste like, why do you like it and how do you pick a good one?

Mangos are my fav!!! As a teen I once went a whole summer eating nothing but mangos, KD and Raman!!

Otherwise nothing unusual... Grapes, kiwi, bananas etc.

I tried a piece of fruit last week and now I can't remember what it was - either passion fruit or star fruit - either way it tasted like nothing, I was thoroughly dissapointed!!

Do I have to pick just one? tongueold

I would say kiwis or nectarines. The kiwi for the tartness, and the nectarines for the sweetness, but overall, the reason I like both is that absolute freshness of the taste. Makes me think of summer.

Then all the usual stuff - grapes, bananas, apples, mandarin oranges, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, etc. I pretty much love all fruit.

Grapefruit.

I eat a grapefruit every single day in the winter (they're not in season in the spring/summer so they are generally not very good then). No brown sugar, no cinnamon. That would just ruin it. Grapefruits are not only my favourite fruit, they are one of my favourite foods. Few people truly understand the juicy goodness of a grapefruit. They are just missing out in life.

ETA: I just saw that the OP asked how to pick out a good one. Well I consider myself a connoisseur grapefruit-picker. Good ones almost always have some reddish tinge, and they are plump and heavy to the touch (that means they're really juicy). However grapefruits are really, really picky fruit. I have bought a bag of grapefruits and none of them were any good. My personal theory is that people who can't stand them have actually only had bad ones. A really good grapefruit tastes incredibly sweet, actually, much like an orange.

Cherries

And I hear the OP about mango tasting like pine. I've had phenomenal mango in Asia/Africa, but the ones imported here are awwwwwful. They also seem to act like a sponge in my mouth, for some reason. Yech.

Mangos for sure. Those yellow ones are the better mango and they are even better in Asia.

In second place is the pineapple.

Any ideas?

I thought of a great fruit that has not been mentioned. Saskatoons! So good. I haven't had the actual fruit in years but we go to a farmers market in the summer that sells saskatoon pie and I also love saskatoon jam. I'm guessing this is a west thing. I used to pick them a lot as a kid here in Alberta.

I have never loved fruit so much as I have since we moved to Australia. Most of it is grown locally, so its pretty fresh, perfectly ripe and tastes WONDERFUL. I havent been pleased with the apples, but just about everything else tastes better.

My new favorites are white peaches/white nectarines. So yummy, and so different. I have also been liking passion fruit, kiwis and mangos latly.
