I need to eliminate dairy from my diet for a little bit so I need a milk substitute. Do you have a favorite? Do you prefer one for drinking, cereal etc and something else for cooking/baking?

I love almond milk. We use a dark chocolate to go in the coffee (delicious) and my kids drink the vanilla, regular or chocolate they love it. I think it's one of the best, we've tried coconut, but the kids hated it.

We also use almond milk here. We had to eliminate dairy from my daughters diet at 22 months. Milk is not hard to substitute the tough one I find is cheese.

Love unsweetened almond milk here.
I've also had a fabulous coconut milk ice cream.

Add me to the almond milk club - it's my favourite of all the alternatives I've tried. Still not as good as real milk IMO, but a bit more subtle in taste and close in texture/thickness compared to the other alternatives.
Best cheese alternative I've found so far is called Daiya - it's shredded so it's good for things like nachos and pizzas. Not 100% fantastic texture-wise but pretty close considering it's made using tapioca. The taste is good too. And I think they have blocks (wedges) now as well.
Oh yes, and the AMAZING coconut milk ice cream - Luna & Larry's Coconut Bliss. A lot of health food stores carry it!

We are dairy free in our house and use PC Organic Soy Milk. Our favorite is the vanilla.

I use Silk organic unsweetened soy milk. There's a bit of an after taste with almond milk that I don't love and soy has protein. It if weren't for that, I would use almond milk.

Good Earth Almond Milk. The chocolate one tastes like chocolate almonds.

So Delicious brand coconut milk in the carton. I like it much better than almond milk. We've even been able to make "cream" sauces with it. It's great in coffee because it doesn't separate the way almond milk can.
I'm not a fan of soy milk because of the hormones so we drink almond or coconut milk. I like Almond Breeze Almond Milk. I can taste the almonds in it. I also make cashew milk. So delicious coconut milk is really good as well.

So good soy milk is freaking gross...so is their ice cream

I avoid soy for the hormone issues too.
I drink Almond Breeze vanilla (sweetened) or chocolate (sweetened). The unsweetened stuff tastes like feet to me and I can't drink it.
For things like mashed potatoes I use plain, unsweetened rice milk. Doesn't add any flavour so it works well for that.
I haven't found a cheese that tastes good. I use the daiya stuff but I don't really like it but some food just isn't the same without some attempt at cheese.
Coconut Bliss ice-cream! I haven't found a flavour I don't like.
Earth Balance margarine. There is a spread and blocks that you can use for baking. I find that the spread stays a bit too hard in the fridge so I leave small amounts out to soften for toast or something like that.

Silk organic soy. We were drinking almond for a few years but DS developed an almond allergy (after drinking it with no issues for 2 years!) so we're back to soy.

I enjoyed the sweetened aka "original" Silk Almond milk the most in terms of flavour.
For texture, COCONUT milk all the way. Much thicker. I only tried an unsweetened one though, so it was basically like thick water. I took our kid off our dairy-free diet at 3 weeks because it wasn't working for him, but had I continued, a sweetened coconut milk would have been my next try. It now comes in a carton just like almond, soy, and rice milks at the same price point.

Another vote for Almond Breeze - unsweetened most of the time. Vanilla as a treat. We're used to it now and for us it just "milk".
I'm allergic to almonds so I've never had almond milk. I drink Silk Organic Soy milk. I like the original (available at Costco in the cold milk section), but I love the vanilla for a special treat. I've tried So Nice brand and I found it chalky and watery. I also hated So Good brand. Silk is rich and creamy.
I didn't know Coconut milk was readily available though. I might have to hunt some down.

BabyG - Natural Food Pantry carries it. They had the yogurt in but it hasn't been in stock now for a couple of weeks (since we first tried it).

another vote for So Delicious Coconut milk. I don't like the natura coconut as much. i love rice milk for its thin consistency (best for drinking!) and drink natural pressed soy as a treat at my parents' house, but i avoid avoid avoid almond milk. i can't even use any good describing words. it just ... GROSS.
