 Joint accounts

If you have a joint account with your SO, did you have to open a new account together or were you able to add each other to your account and get a second card.

Sorry if this is stupid, we only have a joint savings account and we are really hoping we can just add DH to my account (b/c it has no banking fees but maybe it's not that simple).

Enlighten me!

We opened a joint chequing account at ING Direct. We both already had savings accounts so I think that made it easier. Just added it in.

We opened a new one. I don't know if you can add someone, we didn't ask as we wanted to keep our regular accounts separate. I don't see why not...

I got added to my DH's checking account, it's easy if you both go in together.

It was easy to add ex-h to my account. He just had to go in with me with ID and sign.

I added DH to my account. We both had to be at the bank to show ID to get him added but it wasn't a problem.

I added DH to my account. He has different "rights" then I do because he's new with the bank... so we just use my card if we're depositing something big.

I added DH to my account, and now we have 3 joint accounts. There's really no difference between adding someone and starting a new account, unless as you said your accounts have certain perks.

I had no problems adding DH to my account and me to his. We signed some papers and that was it.

DH added me to his account no problems. I closed my other account but kept my savings, RRSP and Visa with RBC. DH is not on those accounts.

I added him to my chequing account. Easy peasy.

I was added to DH's account. I think I just had to go in and sign some paper work.

We switched banks and made them all joint at the new bank.

DH went with me to the bank and was added to my account. At that point, I also changed my name on file to my married name (marriage cert had come in already.

As others mentioned, super easy to add someone, you both just have to go in and sign papers.

Ex and I had a joint account, I booted him off it when we split and it became just my account and then a few years later added DH to it and it went back to joint. Easy peasy.

We've done both... we're pretty simple money folk so it's been our preference to have as few accounts as possible, only 1 Visa (joint), have everything that's possible to be automatic be automatic, and to have it all joint.

Not hard to do at all! One thing I would mention, however, is that with our Visa, it's in my name but he's added to it... so while we can both fully use it, it only shows up on my version of online banking. So I'd recommend checking if opening vs. adding changes anything in that sense.
