If you could go anywhere in the world...

for a week, where would you go?

A little background information:

-DH works for an airline which allows us to fly for drastically reduced rates. We pay about 10% of what a ticket would cost if we didn't have the flight pass.

-We'll have about 7-8 days.

-We'll be flying out of Halifax (we have a wedding there first before we travel)

-Not opposed to a beach vacation, but did one last summer so wouldn't mind something a little different.

-We'll have a budget of about $3500ish.

-It'll be mid July when we're traveling.

Keeping all that in mind, where would you recommend?

Hmm, 7-8 days isn't a lot of time, especially if you're travelling standby during a peak time. That said, I think a trip to Europe would be great. I'd probably just stick with one or two cities. Maybe Amsterdam and Berlin? Paris and the French countryside? I'd double check the vacation times of Europeans though. I've heard there are times in the summer months where entire cities pretty much shut down because everyone is away on vacation!

Spain & Portugal. Both are incredibly cheap to do. Rent a car & drive fr Madrid to southern Spain. Spend some time on the Med & Mar Menor. Great food & lots of great shopping! & you can get very nice (but inexpensive) waterfront rentals in both countries.

Borneo. I would go to the Orangutan sanctuary and volunteer there. I know this doesn;t help you but that would be my vote. smile That or go to Europe... Which might help you.. I'd love to explore Ireland.

Anywhere in Europe would be great for me considering your OP

- flight is not too long
- for your budget
- you said you already did beach and maybe wanted something different
- perfect length for any country in Europe (unless you maybe wanted to do a few at once, or Greece which I heard had lots of great islands and 10-14 days is better)

A different type of vacation then the wonderful places PP's mentioned, but DH and I are currently planning a trip to Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi in mid-August and I am so freakin' excited about it!

We're flying into Atlanta, driving through Montgomery and Mobile (Alabama) to New Orleans. From there we're driving up to Tupelo (Mississippi, Elvis' birthplace) and then up to Memphis and over to Nashville (where we'll fly out). Definitely not for everyone but I'm aching for a road trip and have always wanted to visit the South smile

Paris...well, anywhere in france. I love france.

I haven't done England, Scotland or Ireland. They're all on my list too.

Though if you get discounted tickets, you could go somewhere that's expensive to fly like Bergen/oslo/stockholm...though scandinavia isn't exactly a warm summer vacation.

Egypt is on my bucket list, but I don't know that I'd go right now.

I'd probably do Scotland/Ireland, with that time frame and budget.

My answer would vary greatly depending on what you're generally interested in 'doing' and/or 'seeing' on vacay.

Leaving from YHZ, I'd probably do Europe, especially given your time frame. I'd probably take the direct London flight to Heathrow and then connect from there.

I wouldn't do Paris, but I might be tempted to do a different part of France though.

I have heard that Portugal is amazing and relatively cost-effective, so that would be very high on my list. Somewhere along the Med would also be pretty cool. Greece or Italy maybe?

Way back, another WB'er posted a picture of a place in Switzerland, which looked amazing. It was like a mountain-side meadow a la Sound of Music. I think I NEED to see that place. Incredible. So that would be another cool trip I think - riding gondolas and taking the tourist trains around, and eating chocolate... it probably wouldn't be super hot, which I think would be nice.

Probably Korea or Cambodia. It would be tight on that schedule but the budget in SE Asia is huge so you could do a lot but it would be stinking hot at that time.

Other places I am dying to go is Jordan, Denmark and Spain.

Turkey, Argentina or Iceland

Turkey - I've heard only great things about its history, culture, food.

I went to Argentina for a week and loved it - spent 4 days in Buenos Aires and 3 days on a ranch. Great trip.

Iceland is next on my list. Several of my well travelled friends said it's the most interesting and among the best places they've been.

Nuke mentioned the US East Coast - New York, Boston, DC - I think that any of those would be an amazing choice, considering you'd be leaving from Halifax. You would basically have an extra day because your travel time would be so short.

I was also thinking the West Coast - Napa, Sonoma, San Fran, LA - but really, the flying time would be just as long (or even longer!) as going to Europe!

Seriously, from Halifax, going to the West Coast or anywhere pacific would be difficult given the time frame. It's a longer flight to Calgary from Halifax than it is to London.

Going to London from Halifax is less that 6 hours of actual flying and is a direct flight with no connections. You leave at midnight and arrive at Heathrow at 9:30am.

London will be gearing up for the Olympics at that time, so it might be a bit intense. But checking out some other parts of the UK (or Europe!) would be great! (I have to mention that I don't think I'd enjoy Paris in July though.)

East coast of the US might be neat though. Definitely not my top pick for 'anywhere in the world' but given the constraints, it might be a good option.

I'd love to go to Eastern Europe (Crotia, Poland) but I wouldn't go on such a tight schedule. Other places I want to visit are Italy, Greek Islands, Belgium, Czech Republic, Swizterland and Scotland.

If there is a direct flight to England I'd totally go to Ireland and Scotland, probably take a cheap flight from there ryanair or something like that. If you're getting crazy cheap flights then your budget is pretty good for 1 week.

Not to sound totally bias but Switzerland is nice in July. We have chocolate factories, a statue of a giant eating babies, a 200 year old taxidermied St. Bernard and the Alps. Kind of an awesome place if you ask me. There is also a pesky Weddingbeller or two running around.

Another bonus is that you're in the middle of every where. It's super easy and direct to get on a train and head to Italy, France, Germany and Austria.

We're leaning towards Ireland. It's on both of our lists of places to see. DH gets two weeks from work, but the wedding we're going to cuts into our time.

We also have New Orleans on our lists but I'm not sure about the heat in July there. Although we did Jamaica in July last year and that was just fine.

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies. It's so much fun to hear where other people have been.
