Encouragement Needed, Please - Update #2

  1 2
I'm super nervous at the moment and am avoiding working on what I SHOULD be working on, which is a bad plan. Ha.

About a year ago, I met a woman through work who is fairly senior at a large organization. She's really nice and I kept in touch with her - I even took her to lunch once to find out more about her career path, the organization, etc. etc.

She gave me a call the other day out of the blue to let me know that she's hiring for a position, and she asked me to apply. The issue is that the role would be a substantial step up for me (in responsibility and salary!) and I'm feeling REALLY intimidated. I told her that there would be a definite learning curve, but she just said that HR would call for an interview - which is happening in 3 hours. EEEK!

I have to do a presentation, which I'm fortunately very experienced with (and the topic turned out to be easy), but I am SO NERVOUS!! I just don't want to embarrass myself, ha, and I feel like I need to interview at an extra high standard because she's on the panel and I don't want her to think she made a mistake in asking me to apply.

Also, this is dumb but the salary is intimidating to me frown

Also, um, if anyone knows anything about project management, now would be a good time for a crash course...!

Must go practice my presentation and review my notes!!

I don't know anything about project management, but congrats on such an amazing opportunity! This woman never would have called you if she didn't think you could handle the job. I'm sending you positive vibes! Best of luck! smile

Ooooooh good luck!

Don't let the salary intimidate you. If she's interviewing you, then she thinks you may be worth that salary. And you know what? You probably are!

GOOD LUCK and update us!

Congrats!!!! Jump in with both feet! Nothing ventured, nothing gained. This woman would not have approached you if she didn't see some potential there. I know its intimidating, but you really have nothing to loose, but perhaps your pride? You've expressed your concern by bringing up the learning curve - so you've covered your bases, I think. You've got NOTHING to loose!!! Remember how nervous you were before you did your stand-up routine?? Go for it!!!

You will be fine! You will rock the interview. She was obviously impressed with you when she met you, so don't second-guess her judgement.

It's natural to feel stressed in a stretch situation. It's all part of how we learn and grow. The "imposter syndrome" feeling is all too common. But you don't have to listen to it.

I have a lot of experience in project management and it's not rocket science. It's about planning, controlling, and managing: scope, time, cost and quality. Keys are resourcing, communication and managing stakeholder relationships and managing risks. PM me if you have specific questions, but I don't think you need to worry about things. I'm sure you have more ability in this area than you think.

I'll cross my fingers for you!

I've totally been in your shoes! I applied for a position that was a big step up (difference with you is no one actually encouraged me to apply- I just did). Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I had a shot at it, so I was quite surprised when I was called for an interview. I spent a lot of time prepping for the interview because I was worried of making an idiot of myself. I went into the interview thinking "There's no chance you're actually going to get this position, so try not to stress. You're just going in for the experience". As weird as it sounds, this reasoning gave me the confidence to perform really well at the interview (I figured I had nothing to lose and nothing to gain- that's how convinced I was that I wouldn't actually get the position).

And wouldn't you know it, they offered me the position! I was shocked but also super excited. It was a great feeling. So all that to say, try not to stress. If she invited you to apply, it's because she thinks you have the qualifications to do the job and you probably have a great shot at it. Good luck!

Oh man! Sounds like a great opportunity. Ok, so this lady knows you. She's not going to tell you to apply for something she doesn't think you can handle. Of course you're nervous, but that's ok! Go and rock the interview and just be yourself.

Good luck!

Thanks for your kind words! Ms_M - I've been thinking a lot about what you said and it is really helpful!!

And Mary Ann - your post makes me feel better because although I don't have formal PM experience, I did manage a number of programs and what you wrote echoes what I've been studying (and a lot of it I've done in some way or another.)

Thanks so much to all of you for sharing your experiences and encouragement. Eeeek! I'll post an update when I can... I'll even post a few interview questions in case they help someone else.

Oo exciting. Just remember, they need you more than you need them. Totally true. I've been on the other side of it a few times, and I was usually very nervous as an interviewer and wanted the person to do well!

Project management - Apart from the planning and controlling aspects, I think you want to come across as someone who can build consensus. As a PM you will probably be responsible for project outcomes but not be responsible for the people actually producing those outcomes... so you gotta be able to get people to do the work with out being about to actually reward or punish them. This is something I looked for last time I was hiring a PM type role.

Hi ladies!

So I'm back - and I survived!

I think it went very well (although it's hard to say for sure, I guess.) The presentation was fine (the topic was easy and I have a lot of experience presenting) and the questions were tough but totally manageable. I don't think I stumbled on anything, and even things that I didn't have a ton of experience in (say, risk management) I had studied enough about it so I could speak to it. Thank you to everyone who gave some info on project management.

THEN I had to spend an hour writing a briefing note... I had no idea I'd have to do this - silly HR should have told me! Good thing I called in sick today - I don't like doing this, but the whole process was literally 3 hours long and there's no WAY I could have been 'on lunch' for that long! I don't think I had any difficulty with this, as I just had to summarize an article, provide background information on the research, and give some implications of the research for the organization. I'm certainly not an expert on any of this stuff but I think I managed to use some logic and hopefully it was all fine.

After all that they're going to let me know if I'm asked to a second interview in the next few weeks... I have no idea what on earth this would involve after such an in-depth first one!

But either way, I don't really think I could have performed any better, so I met my goal of not embarrassing myself. So we'll see if it's enough, but I'm happy that I did the best I could.

Thanks so much for your kind wishes! I'll post an update when I hear if I'm called to another interview.

ZB - just seeing this now. Good for you, so glad the interview went well! I will be thinking of you on Tuesday and wishing you good luck.

It sounds like a really exciting opportunity for you. I have often jumped into things that I feel un/under qualified for in my working life. It can be really scary, but I have found that usually I am under-estimating my own skills and experience and I am able to learn as I go and pull things off pretty well. It's a wonderful way to stay engaged in your work and to continuously learn on the job. And of course, this woman obviously feels that you have the skills to do it or she wouldn't have asked you to apply!

I will be looking for your update smile

Alright, since I'm sure you were allllll on the edges of your seats waiting for an update tongueold here it is.

I had my meeting with the VP and the woman I know over there this afternoon, and it went well enough. I think I spoke well and it was really a "get to you know you" sort of thing, and it was really brief - maybe 20 minutes long. I did as well as I could but I couldn't really get a read on things. I'm not feeling too optimistic, but it's okay - if I'm offered, it will be great, and if not, I do like my current job and it'll be all good.

Two things I noted (that might be contradictory!): when I left, my contact over there said that she was "so happy" I applied for the job and then said that there are "a lot of opportunities at XYZ." So I wasn't sure if that meant that there are a lot of opportunities in terms of that position, or that there are OTHER opportunities that I might theoretically be more qualified for.

At any rate, I'm curious how it'll turn out! Thanks again for the encouragement smile I'll post an update when I hear!
