 The price of a purse?

I was just on BTR looking at purses and I found myself sitting looking at a sold sign over a purse and wondering "Who pays $1500 for a used LV purse?".

I get that it's LV, I get that they're expensive to buy new...but why wouldn't you just take that dough an buy new one from a different designer?

Then I got to thinking what the most is I've ever spent on a purse. I think that's my current purse DH bought me, a just under $200 Ivanka. It's awesome, I get a lot of compliments on it...but it's also something that I leave on the floor, kick under tables at restaurants and tends to end up on the floor of the car as well.

If I had the disposable income to spend $1500, I'm not sure I could really do it. A while back, I had the money and was coveting a $400 gorgeous red leather Furla for a month...told DH all the ways I would carry it around the city, how I'd use it every day, how it's really an investment and it would look perfect on my arm. I think I might have indicated I could die if I didn't get that purse...but I didn't quite get drunk enough to hit the "checkout" button after DH told me to get it. I still kick myself for not getting it, but then again, I don't think I would have carried it with me for 5 years like I had promised and offered to pinky swear to DH that I would. laugh

Right now my favourite purse is still my baby pink bowling bag purse I picked up from some street vendor for $40. I've retired my Prada with the Coach lining, apparently knockoffs like to mix elements of other designers. laugh I love my Ivanka, but I'm already looking for my next purse.

So, what about you?
What's the most you've ever spent on a purse?
Would you buy a $1500 used LV purse off BTR?

The most I have spent was around $500 on a Coach purse. I also have a $450 Kate Spade purse that I got for about $150, which is my favorite purse right now.

I keep telling DH that I am going to buy a Chanel purse (probably around $1,500) once I pass my last professional exam. DH keeps telling me he would kill me if I did. wink

The most I have spent is $318 plus tax on a Roots leather purse (or maybe 3 of them?) They are my favorite purses and the only ones I spend that much on, because they are such a nice leather I feel its worth it. I probably wouldn't pay more then that.

I think the LV purses are ugly..all you pay for is that brown and the logo I think.

What I would never do is pay $20 for a cheap purse. If I was changing my purses every month, or depending on the outfit I might buy them from one of those luggage store with all the cheap purses, but I tend to use mine a long time before getting a new one. (well at least now I do)

The most I have ever spent was about $200 on a Hilary Radley bag, that I love. It is really practical and I actually use it almost every day - except in the winter because the weather here is crap and I also don't want it salt stained.

I am DYING for a Marc Jacobs bag, but I can't see myself every justifying it. We're going to NYC this summer though and I have a feeling I might have some purse compulsions while I'm there.

I'm a luggage store girl. grin But then again I do like to change up frequently. I can't really commit to a purse for too long. I remember a friend spending big bucks on a purse and she carried it until it fell apart, I felt really sad for the purse...it was thread bare and stuff. frown

I've been tempted by the Kate Spade purses, they've had some awesome deals on them. But I think part of it for me...I don't want to carry the same thing everybody else is. Has Kate replaced Coach as the new "it" bag? I'm out of touch with trends.

Chanel *drool*. If DH ever buys that winning lotto ticket, that might be on my list of things to get.

I used to totally cheap out on purses, but apparently I'm hard on faux leather, so now I tend to go for the real thing. Still, I think the most I've paid for a purse is $220 for a large zippered tote (which, incidentally, I now mostly hate because if I have the space to carry stuff in my bag, I WILL carry stuff in my bag, and it's just too darn big to not cause me back/neck pain *laugh*)

My purse 'wardrobe' these days consists of:
-1 white & brown Coach (factory) purse - aprox. $170 about 18 months ago? Leather. No huge logos ('cuz I never really understood paying more money for the priviledge of being a billboard. I don't have a problem with logos... just prefer discrete ones)
-1 grey Coach (factory) purse - aprox. $180. Leather. I still have new purse love going with this one 'cuz I only got it about 10 days ago
-1 large red zippered tote - aprox. $220 2+ years ago. Leather (except the handles, which are driving me nuts). I love that I can carry that purse and not need a lunch bag and anything else in my hands. I hate that I DO carry that purse with a million things I don't really need to carry stuffed into it.
-1 black satin clutch - $10 on a cruise ship. Strictly for banquets & weddings.
-1 silver satin clutch. As above.

And if it wasn't for needing to carry an inhaler, I'd probably still just use my pants pockets most days. tongueold

I think I spent like $40 once on a purse, most of them have been in the $15 dollar range. The last purse I bought I almost didn't because it was 29.99 and I thought it was too expensive, but then it was on sale and I ended up getting it for less than $10. I got a coach bag as a gift and though I feel terrible ungrateful for saying this, I hate it. My under $10 purse looks better (IMO) and works better for my needs.

I would never in a million years spend $1500 on a purse.

My two purses are both Coach, and I paid about $250 and $300 (both on sale). I use them everyday, and don't really baby them.

When we were in Italy, I gave myself permission to get a Prada or Gucci bag, but I just couldn't spend the money on them. I think part of it is I don't have the wardrobe to justify having a nice purse. The purse would have been embarrassed against my Old Navy jeans and Gap tees tongueold

If I was actually fashionable and had the budget, I'd buy a vintage LV purse.

I'm lucky to have a mother who supports my purse habit, so I never need to buy new ones because I get them for birthdays or Christmas.

I think the most I've spent on a bag is ~$60.

I think the most I've spent is $40 on a purse and I use it until I can't anymore (ie. falling apart). If I had a crapload of money I'd definitely buy more expensive purses.

I was going to say $50 is the most I've spent on a purse, but I don't think I've ever even spent that much. I go for purses in the $24.99-$29.99 range or less and use them for years. My diaper bag was expensive (to me) at $109.99 and I wouldn't want to carry a purse in addition to that so it gets used for my stuff as well as the baby's. Mostly I use a wristlet that I got on Etsy.

I have a Radley purse that DH bought me for Christmas. It cost 300 GBP, so around $500 Cdn. I absolutely love it and use it every day. It is big enough that I can pop a few of the kids things in it if we're just going for a quick outing, but it still looks nice. I don't know about 1500, I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

To answer the OP's question, most expensive I've spent is around $1850 and I have more than a few (but not all at that price).

Whether or not I would spend $1500 on a used LV - ok, the answer is no, but one very simple reason that I am not a LV fan. If I could get a used Hermes Constance for $1500 in mint condition, heck, I'd jump at the chance.

Before anyone starts judging me (I'm sure you won't, lol) I don't deny that I could put the money to "better uses". I also don't deny that I do love brand names and I know very well that a $2000 purse is not 100x better than a $20 purse. But I also splurge on food, and I know that a 3 star Michelin restaurant in Paris doesn't necessarily taste 5-10x better than another very good restaurant (5-10x depending on price). It's just kind of a personal choice! I also admire some of my friends who have a lot of nice savings built up and they can for example, buy my exact same house but only require lets say 1/2 of my mortgage. But so far we can afford this life style and whether my spending on purses, shoes, trips and restaurants are "better" uses or not, doing those things make me happier (weird I know) whereas people who invest or save or donate to charity, etc, do that cuz it makes them happier... so, I say whatever makes you happier smile

p.s. I do have some friends who are also into brand names, so I don't feel too lonely lol

I love my black leather Mark Jacobs purse. DH bought it for me for Christmas two years ago, and I still use it a lot. At $500, I don't think I could have splurged on it for myself. I'm so so so glad DH did though tongueold

I also have a gorgeous leather hobo bag I bought for myself about 6 years ago, for about $250. It's a light tan colour and while I love it, the lighter colour does show dirt and rain more easily so I find that I don't use it as often as I would like.

My everyday weekday purse is a Coach one (hmm...which incidentally DH also bought for me), aroud $280.

I don't think I could bring myself to spend $1500 on a purse, though.

ETA: ayz - I think it's awesome that you have these gorgeous purses, and you don't need to justify why!

Hey..no judging here. smile My spending habits would be different I'm sure if my bank account were different too. laugh Nah, who am I kidding...I grew up a Woolco shopper, that'll always be at the heart of me. laugh

We all have things that we spend $$ on that I'm sure others would give us the eyebrow for. I get ribbing from my sister because I spend a fortune having coffee shipped to us. It's insane, but we like it. grin

$16. It's a MEC purse with a snap in black.

I never really used a purse, I just used the back pocket of my jeans. One day I accidentally flushed my visa down the toilet (it fell out as I stood up), and cost $400 to Rotoroot it out. So, I now carry said MEC purse.

Thanks for the support tongueold I'm sure OP asked out of curiosity, and I have no problem admitting I might have a *slight* issue when it comes to purses and shoes. I have a shoe closet (not a huge one, but I took up the whole guest closet) and I went to ikea and bought (and built, MYSELF!) a billy bookcase just so I can display my purses INSIDE my closet (I know, so stupid, it's not like anyone can see it lol) maybe one day I should share the picture! tongueold

I don't spend much money on my clothes and what I usually wear is jeans and a black top. So I express myself through my purses.

I used to work at a purse & luggage distributor and I now only buy higher end stuff. One of my faves is a Canadian designer Chris.toper K.on (google his stuff, it's gorgeous) but I also have a few coach.
The most I've spent? $500 I think

The most I've spent on a purse was 110$ only one time. Other than that, its usually 40$. Dh bought me a used Ferragamo purse for 400$ (I have no idea what it would have cost being new) but this was when we were just dating and pre being a SAHM.

I do have some pretty cool purses because a WONDERFUL wbellers sold me hers second hand. I hope she gets annoyed of her purses again and sends me a PM.

While I can afford to spend $1500 on a purse, in principle the most I'd spend on a purse would likely be around $300. I don't think I own a purse more than $100. I'm not really into purses. And I don't want to carry around a Coach or Michael Kors purse that every other girl and their teenage daughter is carrying around so I don't even bother becoming interested in designer purses. I'd rather use a really good leather purse made locally by a designer or even just a good leather Danier/Roots purse.

I have a Marc by Marc Jacobs purse, Xmas gift from DH this year. It's expensive ($450) and a total splurge, and the rest of my wardrobe isn't from the same level of design, but I love it and I NEVER put in on the floor. Otherwise I spend usually in the $100+ range because the cheap ones wear out too fast I find. I usually buy my purses at Winners though.

Ok, stupid question time...that little card thingy hanging off the purse. Is that part of the purse, or, is that supposed to be removed? laugh

I've got a few purses that come with those "tags" and I don't know if I'm looking like an idiot by keeping them on...or if they should just be taken off.

That one specifically is a mirror! Every Balenciaga purse (no matter what style) comes with that, it's kind of their little feature. I don't actually leave it hanging, I stuff it in the front pocket. But I know what you're talking about though, I don't like the tags that just has the logo printed on it, it has no purpose lol

Usually under $40. I get skittish and warm and equivocate terribly if it even comes close. That has only been changed once. I bought an awesome Demonia bag for about $71 after taxes and shipping. It was the last one anywhere I could find (online and IRL) and was worth quite a bit more. I'm not big into purses at all. And every time I go looking (save once), DH has had to tell me to get it as I just won't do it, even if I really need it, without some kind of permission. Mental block there.

When it comes to any indulgence, there's always a "better" place to put that money. Everyone has their weaknesses, mine is expensive wine, and I've spent a lot more on that than over the past decade than the cost of an LV bag.

I have a few designer purses, including an LV, but they were gifts or handed down from family members. The most I've personally spent is about $350.

Question though, BTR is Beyond The Rack? They carry used items? I thought it was all new stuff, like NetaPorter???

The purses I own range in the $100-350 range.

However, the higher priced ones were bought either on sale, using GCs or second-hand. This is the amount I'm comfortable spending and I don't see a change in my salary changing my habits. Now, if I won the lottery, perhaps I would buy something more expensive...but I'm still not sure it would be more than $500.

I never thought I'd spend more than $20 on a purse until about 2 years ago. I was never a Coach fan, but then they brought out different styles and colors. I tend to use a purse until it is unusable, so I made the investment of $112 for my first coach purse at the Vegas factory outlet. Since then, I've bought (or DH has bought me) 3 coach purses and a harley davidson purse, each of which was under $200.

I would never spend $1500 on a purse, let alone a used purse... I could never bring myself to it when I could get so much more for my money.

Well I believe my husband calls purses my comfort item.

It used to be pretty shoes for work but now I am work from home so I have NO reason for all my pretties.

I never have to worry bout whether the purse will still fit:)

I started a cute collection, but nothing over $400.

Everything from hand tooled leather sachels from Mexico to Marc Jacobs and my fave Kate spade.

Would I spend 1500 on a used purse- no.

But who knows in 10 years when I have no mtg and no debt ;(
