How do I get my account deleted?

I'm not really using this forum and I'd like to have my account deleted.

I've tried PMing FriendsFirst and I've tried PMing Admin and asking if they can delete me. Neither messages have been read.

Am I doing something wrong?

Nope - I'll send a message directly to FriendsFirst via email. It will get done as soon as she can get it done.

I totally get that people are volunteers and you're all busy, but I'm surprised that I PM'd FF 2 weeks ago asking for a profile deletion and this still hasn't been done.

Is there a problem with deleting accounts?

Thanks again in advance!

There isn't a problem. It's time consuming (and is normally done at night to reduce the forum down time) and she's dealing with her personal life right now. Honestly, if Admin was around and answering us they should be the one relied on for these types of requests. Ruth has been going above and beyond by helping fix bugs and delete accounts. She's busy, but did reply to my email saying she would get to it as soon as she could. It might take a while longer though. So goes the battle when there's little support from the people who own this board.

Nat&Phil, your post makes me sad for a couple reasons. First, I'm sad to hear that Ruth has personal issues to deal with right now -- that's never easy. Second of all, it sucks that you mods have been left in the lurch once again. frown

Yeah I'm thinking it's time for mine to be deleted as well.... It's too bad it's come to this but I don't want anything to do with this board anymore.
Or maybe I should wait until I hit 10000 posts only because it's a milestone wink
Sad what has become of this place frown

If you don't want anything to do with this place, why do you keep coming back? Eventually all you've posted will fall off the board anyway.

Things fall off with time. The more people post in a thread, the more times it gets brought forward and the longer time it will take to not be included. As a matter of fact, most of the sub-forums default to a relatively short period of time and if you don't know how to change that, the board already looks incredibly sparse and people will not see older posts. Hence why many of the colour threads from years ago are gone. They weren't bumped up since no one posted in them.

Don't post for a month or two and the thread is inactive, you probably won't see it if you come back and you are set to default for how far back you want to see threads. If it's active, then yes you will see it. But it has to be an active thread that keeps getting bumped.

Thanks Nat for letting me know. I hadn't realized that it took so long and that there was no support from Admin. I do appreciate the efforts made by volunteers and I hope that things work out. I'll know that the account deletion will happen when FF can do it.

Thanks again.

Please keep in mind that accounts being deleted isn't a "right" it's a favour. All your posts become public when you submit them and are under this part of the agreement when you signed up:

In order to use these forums, users are required to provide a username and password. Neither the Administrators of these forums, or the Moderators participating, are responsible for the privacy practices of any user. Remember that all information that is disclosed in these areas becomes public information and you should exercise caution when deciding to share any of your personal information.

If you PM'd FF, she'll get around to it when she can. You can also try Admin. Otherwise, all I can do is remind them and wait as I don't have the power to do it myself.

N&P - No need for the hostility, I was simply bumping the thread given it's been a month since the initial requests in the thread. I've PM'd Admin - they obviously aren't reading or responding to their requests which is a shame.

I understand FF (and other Mod's) are volunteers and am grateful for the time / commitment they've made and spent. I think it is really unfortunate that you've all essentially been hung out to dry - FF especially because she appears to be the only one with the power to delete accounts.

Had I known this was how the members would be treated by the higher powers I never would have joined or supported such an organization (and that is directed at SJM or whatever the Co. Name is - not the Mod's).

Honestly if the deletion is so important or there is a thread that you wrote that is bothering you why don't you delete it individually? FF is busy and Admin should be fired. If it is so important than do it yourself.

Sorry what I meant just write deleted in some of the posts. And if it is really that big of deal do it yourself. This is a free service, FF does not get paid to do this, and she will get to this when she can.

(New Admin here) Mechanical Toast and AnnonyWife have now both been deleted. I'm sorry it's been taking so long to get deleted.

I'm a new admin and will make an announcement post later today to update you on how I've been trying to fix things and to get feedback from all of you.

I appreciate your patience with me as I learn this new software!

Lauren_b, yes absolutely I can delete your account. I do not have that email in my PM box or I would have already deleted it. I am up to date with requests (other than those that requested it today... sigh) all the way back to two months before I started here. smile

...HI! to everyone who greeted me. smile I'm a day late but writing a hello message to everyone as we speak.

To anyone else wanting to delete their accounts: I'll do it for you, though it may take a few days.

BUT!

I'm hoping that you might give me a few weeks or a month to see if we can make this a more responsive, a more Admin-involved, and more happy place to stay, and discuss. I know that the past is littered with good intentions but a number of slipups.

I can't promise I'll be perfect but I CAN promise that making this community work is one of my priorities. Not because it's a great business bet but because I really believe that community is important and I know how often in the past communities have helped me through rought times.

More soon...

I have to say that in order for this place to survive (and I hope it does because I've been on this board since 2005), the people that say they are checking back daily in hopes that WB gets going again, need to start posting here.

I've seen a few threads at that other place where it's been mentioned, but if you don't take the initiative and start posting here instead of (or in addition to) there, then who will??

I'm still around! I only stay on the WB side as I hate jumping over to the CF boards because it never keeps me logged in. Drives me mental.

To be accurate, posts only disappeared if the deletion was meant to include them. There are and have been many accounts on this board that were deleted and the posts they made still remained. It simply came up as Anonymous or Unregistered User. A full deletion, including all posts, is a different animal entirely. The first kind is the standard, and has been for some time. A full deletion of all posts can cripple the boards for hours if the account has enough posts in it. For instance, mine.

Also, as has been discussed many times in the past, if you started a thread and your account and posts have been deleted, that thread and all information in it are also deleted. I can't even remember how many times I've heard people complain about that.

I never said you didn't have the right to ask. I answered the question you asked about why it probably wasn't done that way.

I'd suspect new admin is trying to fix up all the crap that old admin screwed up royally. Also, this isn't her only job.

Sounds like it was simply a miscommunication. Admin doesn't know that you (in the general sense) are looking for a full delete of your account and the posters don't know to tell Admin.

Not that my particular opinion matters a whole lot around here because a) I'm a guy, and b) I have a total of 60-odd posts, but its been my experience that in other forums, you are responsible for what you put up, and it's not the forums administrators who are responsible for cleaning up things you don't want publicly available any longer. Don't post something you might regret in the future. I thought that was standard operating procedure on the internet for years now.

This seems like an enormous favor of Admin to grant to a few disgruntled members of the community.

A reminder to all:

1. As Jay said above, deleting your profile is not a right; everyone here posts in full view of the public in a commercially owned forum. The best rule of thumb when it comes to the Internet is that if you want it kept private, don't put it on the Internet. smile

2. Deletion requests will NOT be allowed in the forums themselves and will be removed. My reasons for this - which I really do believe are fair - are outlined above.

3. Deletion requests will ONLY happen if you private message me, Admin; it will only happen on Sunday mornings so as not to take the forums hostage. I can't promise EVERY Sunday things will get deleted, as sometimes I am out of town, have out of town guests or some other critical activity on Sunday mornings smile - but if you request it, I will get to it within a week/few weeks.

Am closing this thread, folks, to prevent more misunderstandings. Thanks again!
