 Tassimo Coffee Maker

Holy crap shocked "They" have done it again! Something that was pennies a cup and easy on the environment is now a huge expense and creates so much garbage. I hate it.....but my husband asked for it from my mom for Christmas, got it and loves it.

Chai latte teas are $1.50 to make at home!!! And the garbage....it is terrible. Is there any way around this? Is there somewhere to buy the coffee cheaper?

I would rather not have 2 coffee makers on our counter...and I agree it tastes better, so when I want a cup - you know what I am reaching for. frown

I think $1.50 for a chai tea latte is really great! If I were to get one at Second Cup or SB I'd be paying $4 or $5 for it.

Is it just the chai tea lattes that you don't like that taste of? Because right after that you say that's the first thing you pick. I'm confused!

We have both, though we keep our coffee maker in our storage room (only bring it out if we need more than three cups), and we use our tassimo on a daily basis.

For plain ol' coffee, I use the Carte Noir - it's pretty tasty! I think it works out to be $0.50/cup.

I love my Tassimo but my Fiance still loves using the regular coffee maker. So what we do if we plan on having lots of coffee we make a pot of coffee, but if I want a latte or something special I make one in the Tassimo. So we use the coffee pot more to equal out the use of the Tassimo. I guess that does not help with your counter space though...

This is exactly why I don't have a Tassimo or other machine that uses the cup or pod. There is just to much waste.

That and the price of coffee is too much. I use a good old French press.

We donate the pods to ODD's daycare -- they are being on playing with *found* items and doing crafts with *found* items...

I also give them the little plastic thing off of milk cartons, milk carton lids, the top to frozen juice cans.

As for the pods being a waste, you can peel the paper off, wash them and put them in your recycle bin with your plastics (at least we can here)

This is why I like the Keurig better.. It has the plastic reusable filter which allows you to brew your own coffee from grounds (cheaper!)

Tassimo pods are recyclable in your blue bin - we have a Keurig but their k-cups aren't recyclable.

You're worried about waste yet go out and buy coffee.

Here's a list of their waste:

- filter used to brew the coffee
- package the coffee comes in
- coffee grinds
- cup and lid

ALL that makes it to the garbage can.

Keurig / Tassimo waste:

- K-cup / T-disc

To me, it's more wasteful to BUY coffee than make it at home. No?

The box it comes it? Erm, is that recyclable????

As for the grinds, they're all contained to the pod. Making coffee at home seems to have just as much waste as a tassimo / keurig.

As for the cost, I don't find it's a ton more expensive depending on the type of coffee you drink.

For us, it's a ton cheaper than brewing evena a half pot of coffee since there's no waste. But if people drink enough coffee as to not waste the pot, it's probably cheaper to just make a pot.

I think the waste factor is about even.

I work in recycling/waste and when comparing coffee at home vs keurig/tassimo, the most wasteful by far is the Keurig.

With coffee at home, the grounds can be compost (coffee grounds are one of the best things you can compost) and the majority of packaging that ground coffee comes in is recyclable. Same with the filter. BUT, even if you don't recycle the filter you used, in a landfill the paper filter will break down fairly quickly.

For the Tassimo (which are recyclable), if you recycle them it's about the same amount of waste as a brewed pot. If you don't recycle them though, then that pod is sitting in a landfill forever.

Keurig K-cups are something that come up a lot in our industry these days as they are one of the most 'harmful' products out there. Basically they're horrible. The K-Cup is not recyclable in any way because Keurig has coated the K-Cup in a 'film' that makes it heat resistant. Because of this you can not recycle them. If you drink a K-Cup a day, that's a huge pile of used cups that will just sit there in the landfill...for YEARS. Keurig did try making recyclable cups but deemed them not up to Keurig standards so they never made it to market. Aside from sitting in a landfill, the only way to get rid of k-cups is to incinerate them at a waste for energy plant but they take MORE energy to incinerate then they produce.
