October - Waiting for your New Home!

  1 2 3 4
Hi ladies! I figured since we just plopped down our 2nd deposit, I might as well also start the new month off!

I also thought it would be nice to include a list of when people are moving into their new home so that we aren't always asking...

If you don't want to be on the list, have a change to make, want to include your name, or I made a mistake, please let me know!

Great idea Nathalie! I'm not sure if you're just listing where we live or if you wanted to list where we're building. I currently live in Mississauga, ON but our house is going to be in Orangeville. Just thought I'd let you know depending on what your goal for the list was!

AFM - went to the site last Sunday with DH to check out the house. Saw that the foundation I thought might have been ours wasn't, it's the townhouses beside ours. Disappointing as I really had hoped that they were making progress on ours. So who knows when they'll be pouring ours, I hoop sooner rather then later as it's already getting cold out. I did take pictures but haven't uploaded them to photobucket yet. When I do I'll post pictures although there's not much to see on our lot.

Hope all of you are having much better luck with your houses!

That's exactly what I was looking for Kelly! Thanks! I'm glad you like it.

Sorry they haven't started on your house yet. They haven't started on mine yet either. She told me today that they should be starting sometime next week and that it totally won't affect our February end date, so I'm really hoping the same for you!

Great idea on the list BebeMama!

Smiles4U, we had a similar thing happen a few weeks ago. Drove by our lot, saw a pile of dirt, got excited thinking that they may be digging our foundation but it was our neighbour! Boo :P Hope they start pouring the foundation soon!

AFM, nothing yet on our lot. Our community was in the news yesterday concerning the neighbouring cemetery and crematorium ... I really hope this whole thing gets resolved soon :S

Shanna - It's been changed! Sorry, I was going by your ticker.
Ooooh...picking appliances is fun! Do you know what you are going to pick? Just curious, you didn't need to do that earlier to make sure that your cabinets would fit?

Bebe_Mama: Great idea! Thanks for starting the list!

Not a whole lot going on with us. We're away on vacation all next week (to Hawaii!!!! ) so I hope we don't miss too much while we're away.

When we checked on the house yesterday, they had hooked up the power to the house, and had the power meter thing attached. They had put some gravel in the bottom of the hole around the foundation, but haven't backfilled it yet with dirt.

Cross your fingers for very little action next week! lol

Nat - Can you add me too please?

Forestsmom (Erin) - NW Ontario - January 2009

I haven't posted much in this thread but plan to post more. We are adding on a 1767sq ft addition to our current home. Our foundation is poured and they should start putting in the floor joists today or Monday. It is a Timber frame house. We also put in a inground pool last week and are doing major landscaping. I will post pics as soon as I download them from my camera.

Emjay - I read about that on the news yesterday. Hopefully they get it resolved soon.

Chrissy - Have fun in Hawaii!! I think (for now anyways) our houses are at the similar stage.

Wow...october!

With the wedding in 3 weeks, and my FH having been on the road for work for the past 3 weeks, not much has been done with the house since the shingles went on. We did go and pick out our plumbing stuff (toilets, faucets etc), so that was fun! Next week I have a meeting with Robinson Lighting to go over the lighting design. More fun stuff!

Shanna - we picked out our appliances a couple weeks ago...we had to get the measurements for the people doing our kitchen. We ended up with all Samsung appliances and a Panasonic range microwave. It was fun to pick out appliances...there is so much to choose from!

Erin - I added you! I am soooo looking forward to seeing pics! I've been waiting ever since I heard about it because it sounds amazing!

Shanna - Sounds good! We also have a standard size we have to fit into, so we are doing the same thing... Good luck!

Bebe_Mama, CBC news was in the neighbourhood on Wednesday (I think?) because some of the residents have been complaining about the smoke coming out of the crematorium from the cemetery next door.

Forrestsmom - Wow, that's a huge addition you're adding!

Are any of the Ottawa ladies heading to the Home & Design show at Lansdowne this weekend? DH & I were thinking of going but aren't sure yet ...

Shanna: Congrats on a possesion date!

No time for shoutouts as I still have a million things to dobut we have internet now! We've actually done a lot; installed washer, fridge, gas range, dishwasher is installed and just needs to be mounted and FH is installing the dryer today. We have window treatments up on the North side of the house finally, so we can pee in our ensuite now, lol!

I still have a lot of unpacking and organizing to do, so it's hectic, but the house is REALLY coming together and starting to look like a home! We have all the furniture put together and my beautiful chandelier is now up. It only took me 4 hrs... =P

Anywho, I had to pop in because I miss you gals and I am so behind in updates! I will do shoutouts next week since I have a crazy deadline at work this week and an OOT wedding on Thanksgiving weekend to attend. I just want to get this house organized!

PS: Kitty is finally settling into the house and isn't crying as much when I leave. I think she thought we were moving w/o her for a while since we didn't bring her over until the 3rd night.

PPS: I really need to set up my desk, because typing on the floor is cramping my hands/arms.

PPPS: Nat, love the list!

MISS YOU GALS!!

Shannabelle - Yay for a closing date. Less than two months away.

Emjay - It is a big addition. We got a little carried away. lol. It is our forever home so we are doing it exactly how we want it.

Maile - How exciting you are in your new home and almost all moved in. I can't wait to see pics.

OK, I am finally posting some pics of our work in progress.

Here is our backyard before:

Starting to dig. This is from the hill looking down to our existing house.

The backyard after we took out 130 dump truck loads of clay and mud out.

The foundation walls are in.

The pool! It was just installed and they are filling it for the first time in this pic.

The latest photo. They are putting in the floor joists this coming week. The pool is towards the back of the yard. Half of one of the retaining walls was built. It looks awesome.

Bebe-mama - I hope both of our houses get started soon and end up staying on the time line they've given us!

Emjay - Hope things get sorted out with the cemetery sooner rather then later!

Chrissy - Enjoy Hawaii, wish I was with you! I hope when you return you see even more progress!

Erin (Forrestsmom) - everything looks great! Lucky you to have a pool!

Kristin_Chris - welcome and I hope your conditions go through!

Bryt - so glad you're in the house finally! I can't wait to see pictures once you have time to take them and post them!

AFM I finally uploaded the pictures from when we went to the site two weeks ago. So here they are;

Our lot, nothing to see really except dirt

Neighbours foundation

Shot of inside of foundation

Shot of "backyard" trying to show the depth of what our yard will be

A picture of the house across the street from where our house will be. When I had visited the week before I took these pictures this house was only a foundation so I'm hopeful that once ours gets started it will go fast!

DH thought I was nuts to take pictures of other people's houses but I was trying to get an idea of what ours will look like when they start it. I don't have any of my actual house yet but when I do I will be posting those too!

We've sold our townhouse (in July) and have been living with my parents until our new house is ready which was supposed to be in September but we all know builders timelines so we've just got our posession date for mid November)

Welcome to the new ladies. MissH222, thanks for posting a pic. I love seeing people's photos. Anyone else have any pics to share?

Maile - I also LOVE that chandelier. Where do you have it in your house? Does it give off a lot of light? Is it something I could put in a bedroom that has cathedral ceilings? Can't wait to see more pics of your house.

Smiles - Its nice that your back yard backs up onto all those nice trees. I would have taken the photos of my neighbours houses as well. lol. My DH would have also thought I was nuts.

ttcsep07 and forrestsmom: Thanks girls! The chandelier was my Bday present this past May. I got my mom, stepdad, brother and FH to chip in for it.

It's from Multi Luminaire in Ottawa (Hunt Club and Merivale) and it's by Amlite. There is a small (3 lights), medium (5 lights) and large size (8 lights). This one is the medium one and it's almost 40" long. My ceilings are 9ft high and it's in my dining room. It gives off a good amount of light since there are 5 halogens on it and you could definitely put it in your bedroom as long as there is one flat area on your cathedral ceiling.

Hi all!
I moved into my house 1 month ago, and shamefully haven't really been back to post pics...and now the house is mostly unpacked but really messy so I don't want to take pics in this state...maybe soon once I tidy up!

But wanted to say to Maile that I love your chandelier too! In fact, we have the same one (3 light version)!! Bought at the same store too probably. My DH bought it and installed it while I was out one morning as a surprise! We had seen it and both immediately thought it would be super cool above our ensuite tub, so that is where ours is. We love it! I don't know what to put above our dining room table as our ceiling there is open to above, so we need our chandelier to be hanging from 18 feet up...any ideas?! We may just do a pendant drum type shade. So far we have only changed that one light.

The house feels like home now, and we got sod last week, so it looks much more finished now. Now we are just waiting for our driveway to be paved, but we might not get that until the spring.

Sounds like lots of people have fall closings - have fun with it!

Hi ladies!

I guess I can officially join the 'waiting for my house' club, as yesterday our offer to purchase a building lot we were interested in was accepted! So we will be moving out of our little Vancouver apartment into a big beautiful house next summer.

We are in the very early stages, obviously, and we hope that construction can begin in February or March. But there is a little event known as the 2010 Olympics happening in our backyard right about that time, so we're not too sure how that might affect our schedule. Our new home will be in Squamish, a town located between the ocean and the mountains about 45 minutes north of Vancouver on the highway en route to Whistler. It's beautiful! I'm so excited!!!!

So you can add me to your list if you'd like:

Auburnista (Pamela) - Squamish, BC - Summer 2010

ps - Did I mention we're building it ourselves?! Except for the foundation and drywall, we will hopefully be able to do it all ourselves, as my fiance used to do it professionally. Bring it on!!!

As for your house, baseboards and trim go in, then paint, cabinets, etc. Flooring is the very last thing to go in (except tile, which goes in before cabs.) Hardwood is last, which sucks cause it's the most exciting thing to see lol.

Oh - quick question ladies. Which cabinet colour do you like for the kitchen? This is the style of door we are going with throughout the house. We are going with the chocolate in all the bathrooms and laundry room, but I was debating between both for the kitchen. There will be crown molding and the light valance for under cabinet lighting.

With a handle similar to this:

The bottom granite is in the most expensive class, so we're most likely just using it in the ensuite.... Most likely it will be the top granite in the kitchen, if that makes a difference in your decision? And the handle is just one that I found on Google, but my builder has one very similar that we get as one of our options. The only difference is that there is an outline (indent?) along the inside.

The top granite would still be nice with the dark. That's what andre has. He also said he couldn't remember the price for the exhaust hood fan thingy... he had friends in the trade to help him.

Nat - I love the dark cabinets, but I am wondering if you may get sick of it if its everywhere. Maybe can you do one or two of the other bathrooms or the laundry room in the other colour? Definitely keep the dark cabinets in your ensuite if you are getting the bottom granite in there. Its just gorgeous. One thing I hate about my dark cabinets in the bathroom is that there are dust flecks from the toilet paper all over the where the toilet paper holder is. My bathroom cupboards are not chocolate, but they are a dark cherry so it would probably act the same. If you can, I would put the toilet paper holder on a wall that's not a cupboard if you use the chocolate brown. We didn't have a choice and had to put the roll on the side of a cupboard. Sorry to go on and on, but it really drives me nuts.

Maile - Is that your kitchen? I love it!

MrsMiche - Yay for getting a closing date! A nice Christmas present.

Question for you ladies that are getting a house built in a new subdivision. How do you pay your builders? Do you pay in installments or at the end? I'm just curious as we don't have a big company building our addition. We pay every two weeks or so.

Erin - We had to give the deposit in 3 parts. We gave $1000 to save the lot, then after we signed the offer, we gave another $5000 45 days after we signed (partially because we were gone for so long), and we are giving the last $29000 on December 4th, about a week after the closing date for our current home. That way we have time to get the money into the bank and then we can write the cheque. Normally the 3rd deposit is given 30 or 45 days after the 2nd one, but because we are giving a larger chunk down (and we are getting that money from the sale of our house), they are letting us extend the 3rd deposit date. The mortgage does not start until our closing date. I hope that helps!

As for the colour, we have that chocolate brown in our kitchen (and bathrooms) right now, but with different style cabinets. We are also installing our own toilet paper and towel holders, so we'll keep the placement in mind.

Erin: No, it's not my kitchen. It's a friend (GM) of mine's kitchen (guy in the pic) that he recently reno'd. Nat knows him also.

As for the deposit, we had to put 5k down to reserve the lot and then give two postdated cheques on that date. Each cheque was for 5k, to be cashed 30 days and then 60 days later. So in total, it's a 15k deposit over 2 mths.

At closing, you have the option of making a bigger down payment or getting the difference back if your 15k deposit is greater than the 5% down that is required in Ottawa.

I'm so excited!!! The letter also gave us a number to call so that we can make an appointment for an on-site tour!!! I'm so relieved to know they are finally starting on our home!!!! And now we have to add brick so i gotta figure out how to match up the brick, siding and shingles! I am not good at this stuff! lol I just don't have a vision...except for the kitchen maybe...hopefully FH is gonna have some good ideas!

Hello everyone! I know I've been a terrible updater but as you can see by my ticker, things have been a little exciting around here

Welcome to all the newbies and congrats on your houses!

Brytani-I can't wait to see pics of your house all done up! I LOVE the chandelier!!!!!!!! We have to start thinking about those kinds of things soon b/c we want to buy everything in stages. Now that we have all of our appliances bought we can move on to other things.

AFM-our townhome looks finished on the outside! All the siding, shingles and doors are in so now its a long waiting game till we can get inside. I know the next two months are going to fly by but I'm getting impatient heheh!

Hello ladies,
Can you join you in this group?

Dh and I have recently sold our house and put an offer on a new house under construction. We started this whole process at the end of August. We found the house under construction and thought about listing ours. We did 2 weeks of clean up and painting at our current house to get it on the market. We finally listed and had a lot of interest in the few weeks it was on the market. In the meantime we had been negotiating with the builder regarding the house under construction.

After 2 weeks on the market we accepted an offer on our current house (subjects were removed on Friday) and placed an offer on the new house. We have to remove the subjects on the new house on Tuesday and once we do that they will begin construction on the house. At this point it has the foundation poured but that is all.

Like many of you we will be moving into my parents house for 3ish months while we wait for the new house to be finished. We have to move out of our current house by October 31 so we have had a very fast time line and it has been pretty overwhelming.

So I look forward to posting in here as we have updates.

We take possession of the new house on January 14, 2010.

Thanks
