 My kitchen reno

  1 2
I've finally taken some pictures of our new kitchen. We had the cabinets painted, took out the sunshine ceiling and installed pot lights, painted, and put in a new floor (cork), countertop (laminate), backsplash, hardware and appliances. DH and I did all the work ourselves except for the cabinet painting and countertop install.

Kitchen before as viewed from the family room (sorry it's from so far away). It had circa 1990 oak cabinets and sunshine ceiling and a 1985 microwave.

The same view after:

Thanks for looking! smile

One question: I see the one new light but I'm wondering what you put where the flourescent was. I have one in my kitchen - and I hate it with a passion. But I don't know what to put there.

Thanks ladies!!

The paint is Benjamin Moore - Mount Saint Anne. It's a gorgeous colour.

Lighting - we replaced the old light above the table with a drum light and flourescents with 5 pot lights. You can just see 3 of them in the 3rd picture.

That is an odd place for the dishwasher! After thought of the previous owners I take it? I guess the alternative is no dishwasher though! Wouldn't like that!

Enjoy your new kitchen!

This looks awesome! It's amazing what paint on cabinets can do! We're in the process of doing the same thing (i.e. painted cabinets, new flooring, countertops, backsplash, and decor) and I can't wait until it's all done. Doing most of it ourselves too seems to be dragging it on for an eternity!

The cork floor...honestly, this is perhaps one of the few regrets I have of the reno. I researched cork and thought it would be a great product. We couldn't afford the commercial grade cork (and I didn't like the colours) so we went with a standard cork product (Torlys), which I knew was soft but didn't hear any warnings about how easy it can scratch. And now, about 1 year later, it's been seriously scratched and dented by dropped dishes, moving appliances and running cats. It doesn't look horrible by any means but I'm a little disappointed with its durability. Maybe a different brand might be better? Who knows...

I think in a bedroom it would probably hold up well.

I think it looks amazing...I love everything about it.

I was hoping though, that you could maybe share a few details on the backsplash. Our next project is the backsplash in our kitchen and what you installed is EXACTLY what I want. Can you tell me where you got it, how easy it was to install, how much it cost (roughly) please?

You did a fantastic job.

BEAUTIFUL! Can you please tell me how you painted the cupboards? Did you prime them first? What kind of paint, ie oil/latex/laminate? and what color is it? (silly question, but there are a bazillion shades of white!! TIA

Thanks again ladies!

Humber - the tiles are from a place in town called Tierra Sol. It's manufactured by Keen Ocean, but I couldn't find the tile on their website. It was $27.50 per square foot and is a mixture of clear class, textured glass, frosted glass and marble. The total material cost including grout and caulk was $700.

It wasn't too hard to install, just a little time consuming. I did the mudding and placement while DH did all the cutting with the wet saw. It took us ~12 hours to lay the tile. The only PITA was grouting - some of the glass tiles are textured and I couldn't wash the grout out of the grooves in the tile without washing it out from between the tiles. I spent 2+ hours with a dental pick trying to get all the dried grout out.

Bridetobe2709 - we had painters come in and do the cabinets. They sanded and primed them, then painted/sprayed them with a lacquer. The colour is Benjamin Moore Ballet White.

It looks amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I noticed you painted your spindles/railing... did you guys do it? Or did someone else? How did you get the railing that darker colour?

Also, would you recommend who did your cabinets?

Also, how bad was it taking out the sunshine box and doing pot lights? I have a seen a few of those sunshine boxes in some of the house we've been looking at lately and it turns me right off. Was it expensive?

first_2b - we painted the spindles and railing ourselves. They were stained mahogany so I just roughed them up with sandpaper, primed them with a stain resistant primer and painted with a semi-gloss BM paint. The high traffic corners have to be touched up every now and then.

The guys who did the cabinets were really good tradesmen, not so good businessmen. The cabinets look great but how they did business was a bit on the sketchy side. If you'd like their name PM me.

The sunshine ceiling was super easy to remove (and then DH sold it for $80 online). It left a decent scar on the ceiling which I had to repair, mud and repaint. The pot lights were a bit more work, DH installed them himself and it took him an entire weekend. It wasn't expensive, the biggest cost was the pot lights themselves. I don't know how much it would be to hire someone to do it for you.

And quick question...what technique & paint did you use for the cabinets? I HATE oak, but unfortunately some of the neighbourhoods we're looking at are oak city...so it's either paint or replace.
