Bad Backsplash Job - Overreacting? With pics.

DH and I got our backsplash installed today. we decided to go with a professional because I like everything to be done perfectly. Below are pictures of what I got. Would you be complaining about it? Some people think I am too picky so I am not sure if it is my pickyness that is causing the issue or if they really did do a crappy job. Should I call and complain?

Thanks

I would complain. The tiles aren't laid evenly, the grout lines are inconsistent, and with some of the curved corners on the tiles it almost looks like they were chipped, but used anyway (Now, this may just be the way the tiles are made, I don't know for sure what you picked, I just find it strange that some of the tiles are nice and rectangular with pointy corners and some have rounded corners).

As well, I personally don't like the tiny little tile bits in the corners. But, by far, the irregular grout lines would drive me BATTY.

The grout is still wet, that is why it is so dark.

I am glad it is just not being uber picky. I will get pictures developed tomorrow and show the store owner. They better get their butts back and fix this!!!

Yeah. I'd complain. Tile spacers are cheap and really easy to use. I agree with the PPs about grout colour.

I think that is what the problem was. They were supposed to be done yesterday but the shipment didn't arrive so they crammed it into today. They obviously rushed to get it done and did a craptastic job. I called them to complain and sent along pictures. They better come redo the whole thing.

Do not accept that! Sorry, but they did a brutal job!
I hope that they willing correct it for you and don't cause you much hassle. (If they are professional, they won't because there is no way someone can say that that is a professional job!)

Your third picture, the third row from the top, the tile is not even straight, and one tile looks pushed in more then the others.

Sorry, HORRIBLE job... it needs to be redone 100%

Tiles are not meant to be 100% perfect and they never are. But this is taking it to a new level. TJ made a good point - spacers are cheap and a professional should have an abundance of them.

Those wonky uneven grout lines would ruin my kitchen for me.
If you want it re-done you'd better get those tiles off the wall before it dries.

oh, I see the tiler who was fired from my job has been making his way east! Sorry, your contractor did a craptastic job. Tell them to chip it all off and start over. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I just went through it myself & after a month it's finally fixed & looks good. Don't pay anything until the job is completed to your satisfaction. Good luck.

Completely unacceptable. I think my 12 y/o would do a better job at getting them straight.

I disagree about the grout color (1) it is obviously still wet in the photos and so the color we see is 2-3 shades darker than what it will be dry and (2) if the tiles are set right a darker grout color can be a nice contrast.

Yes some of those cuts are not great and the one tile is crooked, pushing the next row down as well.

For all of you that say use a spacer-those tiles are natural stone (travertine it looks like) so no tile will be perfectly square, meaning your grout lines will not be 100% even with spacers (we are having slate floors laid and have a lot of this).

Anyhow, the issues I would have are with the crooked tiles (which appear to mostly be the cut ones). They should come back and chisel them out and replace those ones.

The grout is wet in those pictures, the grout is much lighter now and looks great with the colour of the tiles.

I emailed the pictures to them and am waiting to hear back. I am giving them until 9 before I call back and start bugging them. They are going to have to redo the whole job, none of the tiles are straight. Ugh the pictures don't do it justice. 400$ worth of nice travertine tile down the drain...

Having done 4 floors and 1 backsplash in the past few months since moving in, I can tell you FOR SURE that's not worth paying for... We are by no way professionnals and something like that would have definitely not passed our standards... It's clear that the tiles put in the corner have been cut too short and he was too lazy or cheap to take another one and redo it... There shouldn't be such a big gap between the tile and wall, no way! tongueold The guy sucks and they definitely should have someone come and fix it.. ESPECIALLY considering you're paying to have it done by a professional! Geez! Hope they don't give you too much trouble!

I would definitely complain about that. My husband has tiled a million bathrooms, backsplashes etc. and would NEVER let the finished product look like that. The grout lines should be consistent in terms of depth and width (which they are not) and a number of the tiles are both crooked and chipped. I LOVE the tiles you've chosen, but he did a brutal job. Definitely complain!
