DIY CHEAP Art (Large Canvas Knock-off) *PICS*

  1 2
I needed two large pieces of art for the sides of my fireplace, but when I was looking around I couldn't find even one large piece for under $150.00 YIKES!

I was shopping in jsyk when I had an idea...

I bought two fabric shower curtains that have this super cool graphic print of a silhouette of a tree.

I went to home depot and bought the pink styrofoam insulation (comes in super big sizes) and used an xacto knife to score it then "break" to the sizes I needed.

I used straight pins to "upholster" the fabric shower curtain onto each styrofoam block then put a picture hanger on the back of it.

Best this is how LIGHT they are - and easy to hang...

HINT: Paint the styrofoam before upolstering with light fabric, as the pink color may show through (like mine). I am currently unpinning them and painting the styrofoam! haha

Here are some pics of them last night (still a little pink).

Good Luck!

ETA: Okay, I painted the pink foam and re-pinned the fabric ! The pink doesn't show through at all now!

What a great idea!! I might just try that too! I'd love to hang some artwork in my TV room but I'm always worried that my boys will get hurt by trying to touch it. This would be a really "safe" way to decorate!

I was totally thinking it would be perfect for nursery art too!

I love the look of a picture hanging over a crib - butI wouldn't dare to trust that!

OH!!! I also decided to make a headboard out of this styrofoam too - I'm keeping my eyes open for vinyl or faux leather material/drapes on sale!

Question: where did you get your curtains? That is exactly what I have been looking for, but I can't find them anywhere!

That looks great! I actually like it with the pink showing through, looks like sunset. But I can see that the pink colour wouldn't really go in your room.

Such a neat idea, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for thinking outside the box! I have been looking for a canvas for my living room and was coming up empty handed. This has now put a whole new perspective on this. I am always shopping at Jysk too, I will certainly keep fabrics in mind. I also just watched a show on painting and stenciling on canvas that was easy and inexpensive as well.
Thanks again, LOOKS GREAT!!!!!

So clever! They look really good. Did you just push the pins into the sides of the foam?

I love your paint colours too. You wouldn't happen to remember what you used, would you?

All the pins are at the back of the foam, so you see nothing but "canvas" at the sides of the pictures.

The paint colour on the fireplace is called "Antique Rose" by Cloverdale - its not "rose" at all, I don't know why its called that.

I can't remember what our main colour is, but I will repost when I find the sheet that tells me.

thanks for appreciating my idea girls
My mom is making one too!

I just made another one for my master bath room.

Love the art. Great idea!

Just a suggestion for the headboard. It might not work as well for this as the foam is easily dented and headboard has to stand up to more wear and tear than wall art. Just keep in mind that the headboard may end up dented from people leaning against it to read or whatever.

Bumping for me! Question...was it difficult to centre the picture???

Can't wait till DH looks at me like I've sniffed too much paint while I attempt to be crafty...I can usually manage to pull crafty things off, but my process usually isn't pretty...am off to search for cool shower curtains....

Lesley, that's too funny. I've been searching for art to go on either side of my fireplace for a month now with no luck, so I told DH that I think I might try doing something like this instead. He looked at me like I was insane. I think he choked back a laugh b/c he realized I was serious. Anyways, I don't know if I'll ever find the time to do it, but be sure to post pics of yours!!

I won't even tell DH what I'm doing if I attempt this....he doesn't visualize things (and also doesn't understand that I can't have the house decorated in a day)....I painted letters for my neice, his goddaughter and her brother and the whole time I was doing it he said 'can't you just buy some...those don't look good'....of course that was after one coat...in the end he thought I was amazing.... ...

Misty...did your hubby think this was a crazy idea??? I also saw on Racheal Ray another good suggestion...buy some cool wall paper and frames and cut the wall paper to fit in the frames...it looked cool on TV...it's just finding the right wallpaper/shower curtain....

I totally know what you mean! I have intentions of doing both of these projects, but I can't seem to find anything I like that would make it cost effective.

hey girls!!!

It wasn't too hard to denter the peice. I pinned the top and bottom then checked it - I got it on the first try on one, and the second try on the other!

Yes, my husband thought I was nutso. He said it would never work (he couldn't see my vision) and he also said it would like like kindergarten crafts. He was actually really opposed to the idea. haha - now, when even his manly friends compliment them, he is proud to say his wife made them!

I've done the wallpaper framed too! (but a little differently) I got some clear glass frames (same as at ikea) from jysk (good cheap stuf that can look amazing with a little work). I used a classy damask wrapping paper in one of their biggers frames. I did a series of three for above the bed.

You can also put the fabric in the frames!

AND.. dont' forget to check out just fabric from the fabric stores... or cheap bed sheets!

Brilliant Misty, funny casue DH has the smae thoguths on my crafting as well usually and they turn out all the time and has to eat his words;)

Funny cause I just found this section today!! I can't beleive it casue I'm decorating OBSESSED!! So a while back I fell in love with 2 paint colours and bought them without having a plan. Last night I went to Michaels to buy canvases?.lucky me I got there and they were on sale!! Ok I'm now at my now What phase. It'll come to me. I'm not "artist" at all (can't draw, need a ruler etc.) but I'm thinking about doing something with my new white canvases and my 2 new paint colors:)

I have 2 windows exactly where you put those pictures and now I'm annoyed I have windows cause I want to do that too!!
