My cat has a large mass on his abdomen

Smokey has been a little off lately, and I sensed something was wrong.

He had lost about 6-7 lbs over the last year
Has just started drinking massive amounts of water, and taking pees the size of our feet, and his appetite has just shrunk to extremely little, his poos are non-existant

We took him to the animal hospital and they said he has a large mass on his abdomen, they did blood work and his white bloodcell count is high.

They said they can refer us to a hospital in Oakville/Mississauga, which will cost about $1000-$1500, and they will probably pull some cells out of the mass and give us a prognosis.

Has anyone been through this before?
Smokey is about 9 years old
I think he is is pain, as he is breathing heavy, and he has been grunting for about the last 18-24 hours. But the vet never gave us anything...

I don't know much either but it's something you guys are going to have to decide. I'm not sure if the vet get you any idea to what it is?

I can really see DH and I spending the money on our dog, though. He is our baby.

It's just something you guys have to figure out.

Good luck and keep us posted.

This is my sad update:

We had to put Smokey down today. He had a tumor the size of my fist in his abdomen, and his body had rapidly detiorated, he was having such difficulty breathing, and he had a heart murmur, and more than likely fluid in his lungs. The cancer had spread so violently and quickly throughout his body, and it affected so many areas of his little body.

We had no idea, he was happy, and playful up until 48hours ago. We knew he had lost weight, but we just figured that was good since he was so overweight to begin with. We saw our vet on Sunday morning, and went to the specialist in Oakville today and they said they thought he would die on the operating table, and if he didnt, then with chemo he would have 4-6 months max to live.

If we took him home then that would have been cruel, as it took so much effort for him to breathe, and he wouldn't have made it through the week.

Needless to say this is the hardest thing we have ever had to deal with, he was and is our baby boy. We love him so much, but I believe we did the humane thing.

If anyone has a cat and you notice that they are losing alot of weigth, please go to the vet, we had no idea that losing 6lbs in 1 year was bad. (He was 17lbs, about 3 lbs overweight). Throughout the year he was eating like a champ he backed off the kibble and ate 90% wet, so we thought that is why he lost his weight, unlike our girl cat who is 70% kibble/30% wet.

Awww sorry to hear.

My dog also had a cancerous mass in his spleen a few years ago. We also put him to sleep. He had anywhere from two weeks to a month to live and the vet also didn't recommend operating. His tumour would just burst eventually.

Thanks ladies. It's been very hard. I worry about Goldie the most as even though they weren't super close she has know Smokey longer than we have.

I am not sure if she knows he is not coming back, she does seem a little depressed, but she is still eating/drinking/grooming etc...

She has been more vocal, clingy etc...
I am pretty sure she is lonely because even though they didn't cuddle etc, atleast she always had Smokey at home with her.
