When did your toddler stop using a high chair?

Hi there,

I am just curious at what age your children stopped using their high chairs?

My son is 17 months old and he is still sitting in his high chair for all of his meals. He loves being in his high chair and we pull the high chair up to the table so he is still sitting at the table and eats all of his meals with us.

The high chair that we are currently using is a Graco Contempo and I have no issues with it. The best part is that I borrowed it from a friend of mine so it did not cost us anything. However I am going to have to return the high chair back to my friend in the next 4-5 months, as she is about to give birth to her second child. My thought was to keep her high chair until she needs it back and by that time my son should be close to 2 and I dont even know whether he will still be using the high chair at that time anyways.

However, I notice that Toys R Us is having a sale right now on their Graco Blossom high chair and I am wondering whether or not it would be worth buying it.

The thing that intrigues me most about the Graco Blossom high chair is that it can also be used a booster seat that attaches to any regular chair, or you can turn it into a separate youth chair. So I figure that if I purchased this chair now, my son would probably get at least another year and a half out of it, and by that time I imagine that we will most likely be expecting baby #2 and will have our own high chair to use for the new baby without having to borrow from my friend again.

Am I completely nuts to think that my son will be able to use this high chair until age 3? I am just curious at what age most children stop using high chairs?

Thanks very much and I apologize for the long-winded post! 

Since the high chair converts AND you plan on having more kids, you'd probably get some use out of it. Otherwise, I would say to just get one of those clip-on booster seats (like the Fisher Price ones). They are super portable, and they work from the time the kid is 6 months until they are just using it as a booster.

DD is 3.5 and refuses all forms of booster-type seating (she has since before she was 3).

I've had my guy out of his high chair since just around 18 months. Well we never used a traditional high chair though, we had one of those on top of chair high chairs because our table is bar height and it just worked better. The arms of it don't fit under our table and when he didn't want to have a tray and fought the seat we bought a basic safety first booster and he sits on that pulled into the table.

at about 16 months. We moved into a new house and the booster seat was sitting around and she kept climbing into it, so we started using it then.

My DS is 3 in a couple of weeks and he still happily sits in his high chair. I'm in no rush to get him out of it either since it's the only time I can get him to sit still.

17 or 18 months. It was the type that sits on top of a regular chair, and he started climbing in and out on his own so I put it away for safety reasons. He sits just fine at the table in a regular chair.

If your situation though, I would buy the new chair because you will likely get some use out of it with your current LO and will for sure use it with a 2nd.

I moved my DDs from their high chair (a wooden one that pushed up to the table) to the Fisher Price Healthy Care booster around 18 months. They've just recently started sitting on a regular chair most of the time.

Before 18 months for sure. She would fight it, so we gave up. It was one that strapped to the chair, and we had even taken the tray off and had it at the table as a booster. Still - she was just too much the "big girl" to want anything to do with that!

DD started refusing to sit in the high chair around her 2nd birthday, and has sat in a regular chair since then... she is pretty tall though and doesn't need a booster.
