And just a little clarification - Buzzle started AFTER WB blew up. It wasn't the cause of it - it was a reaction to it. Some people seem a little confused on the timeline.

I'm over at Buzzle too, but pleeeeeeeease don't judge the entire forum based on one poster coming back to post this sort of thread.
The majority of us accept the status quo and I certainly don't feel any need to come over here and mock how quiet it is. I don't find it mock-worthy - I find it sad as I think most of the people who made the switch do. I hate how polarizing this kind of thread is - whether it's poster here or there.
ETA: MrsF - just read your response. Can you honestly not see how some people would see this as mocking? Didn't you post something extremely similar not that long ago and got exactly the same response? I just don't see how this would have been perceived as anything other than a taunt.
Probably wasting my breath here though. I suppose by replying I'm a "beeyotch."

I have only skimmed the thread, but I wanted to say that I spent the first 6 months of my child's life terrified to go out in public because of some of the attitudes in this thread. Seeing how much people judged women who are simply trying to get their kids fed. I'm not the most coordinated person in the world and I was so bloody paranoid about someone *gasp* nipple while my kid latched on.
A cover was not an option - he hated it. And the nursing were not always accessible because other people were often using them - and my monkey was not patient when waiting for food in the early days. So it was either be scowled at for breastfeeding in public, or be scowled at for having a crying baby. I preferred to stay home.
Luckily some women on here were very supportive when I expressed this feeling and made me realize that it's ENTIRELY your own hang up if you don't like seeing a nursing mom in public. If you feed a kid a bottle there, I'll nurse him there.
Talking about "whipping out" boobs and "letting it all hang out" when women are just trying to feed their kids, however, can make it very intimidating for a new mom to get out there and feel comfortable breastfeeding in public. I do find it sad that these attitudes still exist.
ETA: I realize the judgement goes both ways. I'm obviously only commenting on my own experience.
ETA2: The comparison between breast-feeding and feeding with a penis is disgusting. I'm tempted to completely ignore it, but I simply cannot believe someone would make that comparison. It makes me extremely uncomfortable.

Wow. Yeah, everyone is really "high school" for fighting for the community that they've been involved with for years.
That type of insult isn't adding maturity to the conversation. Many people are fighting to hold together a community and you blast them as being immature. Nice.
The truth is, if people start leaving en masse, the community is destroyed. We can move ship, but not everyone will go. Some of us quite enjoy it here and don't want to lose that. I haven't had much to add, but I will stand up for those who are asking questions when the insulted like that.

For those of you reading along:
Work Force Adjustment = job cuts
Affected employee = employee whose position will be cut, but will do a "selection for retention"
Selection for retention = competing with your co-workers for your own job
Opting employee = employee who has been cut and has NOT been offered a "guarantee of a reasonable job offer" and must make a choice about how to leave the government
priority list = a list of laid off employees who have "first dibs" on jobs (not sure how they decide between using the priority list vs an internal competition on publiservice. I should know though

)
transition support measure = the package
alternation = employees who are not "affected" can offer to switch places with someone who is going to be laid off
The newspeak terms being used in this whole exercise are ridiculous.
My thoughts are with those of you who received bad news. We got our news last week and while I was spared, they are closing entire offices. I won't lie - I've considered alternation, but my job is too specialized.

I have to go for a [non-pregnancy] ultrasound. When I booked, they offered me a female tech or a male tech with a female chaperone.
Is this common? Is there a regulation that requires the female chaperone be present? I'm just curious because I don't remember that being an option when had ultrasounds in the past.

PD - can we engage in a pact? A knowledge sharing pact?
I can totally respect not wanting to share your previous username for privacy reasons, but don't like the "nah nah nah boo boo, I ain't tellin' you!" attitudes. Kinda makes me think one wants people to figure them out - especially when paired with vague hints.

I recently proposed an exchange with a local business. I would do some work for them and they would allow me to use their service free of charge. They regularly do exchanges, but not for the type of work that I was proposing. They've taken awhile to get back to me, so I figured it was a no-go. No biggie - it would be cool experience for me, but it was a new idea for them and they weren't sure of the logistics.
(Them = two owners)
The other night I was there and one of the owners asked, "Has Jenny called yet?" I told her that no, Jenny had not called. She smiled coyly and said that Jenny should be calling me tonight and I'd be pretty happy with what she had to say.
Jenny hasn't called. It's been two days. So, do I call Jenny**? I'm going out of town, so I won't be in all weekend, so there's no occasion for a "chance" meeting. I could also email as I have emailed back and forth regarding this.
Relatively simple "dilemma" but I'm not really good at making these types of judgement calls recently. Too much other stuff going on!
**ETA: There's no way in heck I will call. So I will amend it to, "Should I email?"

Phone cameras are getting better and better. The phone companies know that this is how people use their cameras and are tailoring the phones to compete with low-end p&s cameras. There are some that believe low-end p&s will not last that much longer. The convenience of taking a picture and uploading it instantly is quite a pull.
We don't have these phones yet, but the mobile phone/cameras in Japan rival even higher end p&s cameras. My husband's a camera nut, so he reads all the blogs about new products so I get to hear about it. It's probably a side effect of everyone and their dog having a digital SLR, too. You can't whip it out easily for snapshots (well, unless you're DH

) and lots of people don't want to buy two cameras.
It's funny that you're reminiscing about point and shoots the way some people reminisce about film cameras!

The horribly ironic thing about the whole debacle is that people always say that if we were posting with our real names we'd probably post differently. I didn't realize that meant people would just be mean just for the sake of it.

tojules - I was just going to say that. One person's "cool" poster is another one's top "ignore" poster. So the idea of these "cool" posters is just mind-boggling. I like certain people more than others - WE ALL DO! I certainly like my husband a hell of a lot more than all of you (sorry PD!). No one would be offended by that.
So why is it so offensive to that I may like bride2b2005OMGBBQ better than jaxxonsmamailu? Certain people click, while others rub each other the wrong way. And then there's the in-between of people who kinda know each other, and kinda don't.
There's also posting style. If I always post "this!" or "Wow, I agree" without contributing, people likely aren't going to notice me as much as if I were to contribute something new to most posts - whether it be something really well-written, super funny or downright offensive. (And yes, on WB you can be the biggest B in the world and still have people "like" you.) I can tell you that it wasn't until I started posting in more controversial threads with what I really thought that people started to notice my posts. One of the times that I "disappeared" I hadn't been posting as much and no one noticed. The last time I took a break, I'd been posting quite frequently beforehand and my absence was noticed.

Bleuberry - I can only speak for myself of course, but the reason I had to take a step back initially was not SJM. Of course, as I said, I felt misled.
But it was the FB group and some other posts that I saw on people's walls after all the drama went down that has "ripped apart" the community from my perspective. To know that on here, people are presenting one face and one story, while mocking people on FB.
So now, I'm just testing the waters, seeing who is about and how things are going down.
It's hard to rebuild a community when you've seen the members of that community express their "true" feelings about you or your opinions. It's hard to know who to trust. I'm not surprised that people are a little gun shy.

To answer Milly's post - a lot of us have been around for a few changes. We've gone through layout changes and board migrations and people are always up in arms (including myself!) when the change first occurs, but, in my time at least, it has always been cosmetic. I thought it was a bit ridiculous when people claimed that they would never come back because the forum was too pink - especially since there were other options!
I really believed admin this time when he/she said that the URL would change. I didn't see anything to get worked up about because the claim was that we would not even know which site we were on. Clearly that was either a lie or admin was writing cheques he/she couldn't cash. Either way, I don't feel that I let the community down by not speaking up. I just wish we'd been given more accurate info earlier on.

I have the same question as Fodder - how much does the sidewalk encroach onto the driveway?
For us (DH), being on a busy road was a deal breaker. I know what type of road the model homes are usually on and that would be too busy for him. (He likes streets that ONLY have traffic of the residents of that street.) For me, while I rolled my eyes at him, I am glad he was that anal about it.
Is there a difference in the yards? Do the both back onto other houses? Is the model home landscaped?
Aside from busy road and the driveway, the model home *does* sound like the better of the two. But for us, those two issues would be big ones.
Are you staying in the same 'hood? (She asks, nosily. :D)

Here's mine: I really regret selling our house last year. For many reasons - partly because of what we bought, partly because we would have made a buttload (a real unit of measure!) more money by keeping for even one more year, partly because the location was much better than I realized. And I think we may lose money on this place unless we keep it for a long time.
