My prof skipped defamation in my law school torts class, so I'm basically talking out of my butt here... but I would be surprised given the circumstances if you could sue. What damages have you really suffered? Plus, taking legal action would be costly and stressful. I understand your frustrations but it's probably best just to get over it and move on. The people who witnessed her outburst probably passed it off as crazy ramblings anyway.

I got mine on clearance from Chapters recently. One big one and one small one for a grand total of $7 or something ridiculous (instead of $50 plus tax). They were advertised on the website and said that my local store had stock---but I went there and they were nowhere to be found. UNTIL I looked up at the very top shelf of a display. They were filled with bath salts.
If you live near a Chapters maybe you'd have the same good luck that I did! They aren't on the website anymore so I kind of doubt it...but you never know

This is coming from a very flat chested (also less than an A) woman who also used to work out without a bra (only in my home gym though!). I wear one now only because I actually find it more comfortable at this point...absorbs some sweat or something...

First and foremost, READ THIS:
http://www.tomsguidetoparis.com/TomsGuideToParis.phpI found it very useful.
We stayed in Paris (in the Marais---an apartment) for 4 days back in the summer of '09.
My favourite spot was definitely Sacre Coeur/Montmartre in general. We opted to return there for a night visit rather than the Eiffel tower.
L'Arc de Triomphe was also spectacular. It's a hugely busy intersection (err roundabout) which I had never really realized prior to visiting it.
We walked EVERYWHERE. Partly, I think, because we were timid about taking the Metro. We did wind up on the Metro a few times and it's easy enough---my one tip being that UNLIKE here in Vancouver for instance, you have to actually pull a latch to open the doors when you get to your stop. They don't just open automatically. Took me a moment to realize it and another second or two and we would have been stuck going to the next stop.
I would avoid starting any conversation with "Parlez-vous Anglais?". I'm fluent in French but not terribly confident I guess, and found that when I started off with that, the French kind of gave a subtle eyeroll and would generally answer no even though many French people take English in school and speak it well. Instead, I would focus on "Bonjour" and "Bonsoir" etc. Check this link out for proper usage (no, really! it's helpful):

I've never had a problem. I mailed black envelopes with white writing (I used white shipping labels and then printed on them so the background was black and my text was white), I've mailed black envelopes with handwritten silver pen, and last week I mailed dark brown envelopes (with white labels and black text) again with zero problems whatsoever.

My brother and I were both assessed as gifted when we were in elementary school. He was urged to skip a grade but my parents declined. On the other hand, I was given carte blanche to leave my classroom at any point during the day and mosey down the hall to a small 'gifted' classroom where we basically just hung out and worked on REALLY cool projects (model rockets for one). The deal was as long as we kept up with our regular classroom work we could go to the other class when bored.
My FIL was never tested but I'm pretty sure he would have classified as a genius. Incredibly smart. The way he could grasp new scientific (or any topic really) concepts in the blink of an eye was always mind-boggling to me. He absolutely showed Aspergers tendencies, major anxiety and depressive tendencies, and was agoraphic at the time of his death. He used to stay awake for 2-3 days at a time, no naps or anything, researching whatever new thing was on his mind. He also liked to invent things and was very much an entrepreneur.
My DH shows similar traits to his dad, but not on the same level. My SIL as well. She can do complicated math in her head in seconds. I'm excellent with math but she blows me away with her speed.
I was always jealous of my friends with average abilities because there seemed to be less pressure put on most of them and they just seemed HAPPIER overall. But as I'm getting older, people I'm close to are revealing more and more how they felt jealous of my smarts all along. I think the grass really is greener.
I hope my son does well in school but I hope I can avoid putting the pressure on him that my parents put on me. I just want him to be happy.

ATTN: Moosehead (I really admire your sense of aesthetic)? Anyone else?
I posted in the Yardening thread while back, but I'm a fraction more organized now and feeling selfish enough to start my own post

So we have this long narrow stretch of garden along our front entry. Changing its size is not an option. Currently there are just bedding plants in there and last summer I grew dwarf dahlias in a very symmetrical, matchy-matchy, boring layout. Meh. I'd say it gets about 1/2 sun in the summer months.

I love the idea of a range of evergreens/ shrubs / ornamental grasses / ornamental cabbages, maybe some ferns----lots of shades of green with more of a free flowing style overall but a very clean look at the same time---i.e. manicured shrubs of different heights and shapes. I realize I have an odd narrow space to work with.
I quite like boxwood species and I also already have 2 vivid green lemon cedars in pots that I can put in this space. I love camellias but not sure one would work here.
Would anyone be willing to offer me some design advice? Scribble on my picture?
Here's another couple views of the front:

I would love to do something in the other flower beds too, I only like the rhodo on the left in the first picture, and I only love the Japanese maple in the other bed, but neither are my priority right now. I would also love to paint the house a different colour but unfortunately it was done in the recent past, before we bought it, and DH isn't about to let me change it until it needs it.

TIA

It's absolutely a camellia! Often labelled as "Camellia japonica" or "Japanese Camellia". They are my absolute favourite shrub. You can get ones that will grow more like trees, versus wider shrubs, some that look like topiaries, etc. Many different bloom colours too, but the one above is dear to my heart.
They can usually survive a pretty hefty pruning, and do well in shade. The ones in my neighbourhood all bloomed last week. Most of the blooms have already fallen only a handful of days later, unfortunately.
At Home Depot they seem to run in the $50+ range, but at nurseries they can be much cheaper (I bought two at $24.99 each last season).

I think the 40% off is at least a few times a year if not more. I don't think I've ever bought anything from the Bay in the housewares/linens departments without scoring 40% off! But really I'm just talking out of my butt. It might be worth it to pick the stuff up now and return it down the road if you change your mind.
[Side note: I notice that Sears and Zellers have changed their return policy from the 90 day returns to 30 day returns unless you're using their in-house credit card... Bay might be the same...]
I know I got the Hotel brand line sheets for a wedding gift 4 years ago at 40% off around the end of May. (btw--my friend still loves them and they've worn really well). Regular price 1 flat sheet was OVER $200 though. For ONE sheet. So steep.

I literally have a spreadsheet somewhere from when we bought a new bed, mattress, pillows, and linens. I can't find it but roughly, we went like this:
$1500: Mattress & boxspring (king) (Sears)
$900: Bed Frame ("Grayson" from Sears)
$200: "Summer silk" filled duvet (Daniadown)
$100: Down-filled satin edged blanket for layering in winter (Smart Bargains). It feels great and looks beautiful but it was 'shedding' feathers like crazy so I've put it in the closet for now.
$100: Taupe king-sized duvet cover with 2 shams, has a bit of a Greek key pattern (Winners). I wanted plain white but couldn't find anything reasonable anywhere.
$100: 1 set of plain white sateen king sized sheets, came with 4 pillowcases (Smart Bargains)
$75: 1 set of tone-on-tone white king sized sheets; they have the same Greek key pattern as the sheets (Winners)
Both sheet sets had a high thread count but ultimately I find that the style (sateen, jersey, etc.) is more important. My favourite sheets are often ones with 300-500 thread count instead of 600-1000. Personal preference for sure!
Pillows:
$80: 2 queen sized memory foam pillows from Costco. (I use these heavyweights to support my back while breastfeeding in bed). When the bed is all made up they go behind all the other pillows and prop them up nicely.
$200: 2 high quality king-sized down filled pillows with silk zippered cases (1/2 price at Smart Bargains or Overstock, I can't remember). Oh how I love these!! They are what I actually sleep on. I can't live without them.
$20: 2 total piece-of-crap cheapie king-sized pillows for my decorative shams (Target)
There we go. I was prepared to make a decent investment because prior to this we were sleeping on a 20+ year old POS mattress that used to be at DH's (where his dad smoked 3-5 packs a day). Gross. I'm so happy with pretty much everything. You can see the edge of the bed in this picture:

We cook with alcohol frequently and have never been concerned about our little one enjoying the meals. I'm talking stews with a decent amount of alcohol from as young as about 7 or 8 months. The amount he winds up ingesting is very meagre.
I'm sure I have naysayer mommy friends who use more vanilla extract in their sugar free gluten free blah blah blah homemade super natural no preservative baking.
On a side note I have pregnant friends and family who've always requested no alcohol in cooking. Like, no 1/4 cup of sherry in an entire pot of French Onion soup. To each their own!

For texture, COCONUT milk all the way. Much thicker. I only tried an unsweetened one though, so it was basically like thick water. I took our kid off our dairy-free diet at 3 weeks because it wasn't working for him, but had I continued, a sweetened coconut milk would have been my next try. It now comes in a carton just like almond, soy, and rice milks at the same price point.

Holy crap glad to see the ETA on that MmeBruni----we did 1500 sq ft for about 7 grand TOTAL lol (did it ourselves though).
Echoing what everyone has said---the quote sounds about right. I also don't care for the quarter-round trim. It comes in handy in some places but generally I'm not a huge fan. Although--my friends have white baseboards and maple floors and their quarter round is maple rather than painted white and it actually looks pretty nice.
We got a quote for all new baseboards and it was so cheap we didn't even try to take the old ones off carefully. My parents, on the other hand, spent hours and hours painstakingly removing theirs (in over 3000 sq ft of space) then fixing them up and repainting them. To each their own! For us it was a great excuse to upgrade to a wider trim.

We made one awhile back! I never did do the tufting (made the fabric covered buttons but never got around to attaching them).
Ours is pretty sturdy---it is framed kind of like you'd frame a wall if that makes any sense, had a thick layer of high density foam as well as a layer of batting. It also has legs (so no attaching it to the wall or anything).
It's in our guest room now and honestly I wouldn't be sad to see it go. It's nice, I'm just over it. They DO collect dust (like any furniture) and my cat loves to jump up on the top of it, leaving a few snags.
I also prefer upholstered headboards with piping and I was too lazy to do it for ours

Our neighbours are friendly, but I'm sure it helps that I've lived in this cul-de-sac for almost 25 years-- so a handful of them have known me most of my life.
Some of the quieter newbies have just taken a little work. The 'originals' as I call them have perceived some of the newer neighbours as unsocial or snobby but I don't think they put in a decent effort at being friendly towards them in the first place.
It probably helps that we have a cute little guy charming them all too...many have grandparent envy or their kids/grandkids live far away.
I like that we have friendly neighbours because they keep an eye out on our house if we go away and visa-versa. Plus it just feels good to have positive interactions with people!

You can get a really fine-woven set of microfibre cloths from Canadian Tire (for one--I'm sure they are available elsewhere)----they are like the tiny cloths you get to clean your eyeglasses only bigger----and I find these work great! They don't cling like traditional microfibre cloths and get full of lint and whatever else in the dryer. They leave a streak-free finish.
I just use them with a vinegar/water solution.

Anyone wanna help me plan my front yard garden beds?
Here's some pictures!

Pretend the Christmas decor is all gone, because it is now

We've been in the house for just over a year now and haven't had time to do much. Last year I just did planters on the front steps (3 on each side) and the long narrow bed beside the walkway was very symmetrical with dwarf dahlias in several colours spaced out evenly. In front of the rhodos in front of the big front window I edged the semi-circle with impatiens and then a row of violets.
Down in that bed by the base of the driveway---same thing---impatiens all around. The rocks look terrible in this photo but in person they aren't very noticeable---the azalias basically hang over top.
Right now all the spring bulbs are popping up----mostly bluebells which I know can be a pain to fully get rid of if we decide to get rid of them---and daffodils.
Anyway... I just dabble in gardening and thus far all I've ever done is really boring symmetrical 'designs' (if I can even call them that) and planters and ultimately this just isn't my taste. I much prefer more abstract designs with lots of shades of green, lots of structure, and different heights.
I've seen lots of inspiring pictures contrasting greens and purples (ornamental cabbages much of the time) and I really like that too. I like what I see when I search "shade gardens" and I like manicured shrubs.
So. Any ideas? The rhodos are well established so the thought of taken them out scares me a bit... I think starting with that long narrow patch along the walkway would be a good way to get my feet wet. I think the area qualifies as "partly sunny" during the summer.
Thoughts??

I think it was MmeBruni that touched on a really relevant point...that is, that we'll be criticized no matter what we do.
I'm one of those people who cleans cleans cleans 24/7. I wouldn't hire a cleaner at this point in my life because once every week or 2 weeks or 3 weeks just ISN'T enough and I do better. My toilets get cleaned a couple times a week. I vacuum daily. Blah blah blah. I am sleep deprived and I have lot going on but I'm good at multitasking and good at time management. The thing is people TOTALLY assume that because my house tends to be pretty clean and I get a lot of personal projects done that I "must" neglect my child for chores and don't do anything fun with him (which is sooooo far from the truth). I've had family members (the non-tidy type) mutter things under their breath about the dust on their cabinets and how they don't care because they "at least play with their kids." Then I have other friends who talk about how dirty and disgusting various other friends' homes are 'because they have kids and no time to clean'.
You seriously can't win regardless of whether you hire a cleaner, do it all yourself, or live in utter filth

First of all, it depends if you have sealed hardwood floors or not. You can't use (or shouldn't use) a steam mop if your hardwood floors aren't sealed. Most modern wood floors are NOT sealed (in my experience).
I use the same Rubbermaid red pads shown above by Bandaidchik. I don't have the whole system but rather just some cheap blue mop handle from Walmart that works with it. I go around with a spray bottle (very fine mist of water & vinegar) then use the mop. I've tried different mop pads and the red Rubbermaid ones are seriously unbelievable. They just glide so effortlessly in comparison to other microfibre ones I've tried.

They are pretty standard in my neighborhood and almost every house has them if it was built in the 70s or 80s. Never had any problems with ours (neither have my parents 2 doors over) and they are a huge feature in our home. It just wouldn't be very bright without them. One of them is in a bathroom that would otherwise be windowless.
That said I think they have a tendency to look a little dated and there are definitely times when I'm tired and light sensitive and wish I could cover them up

But they were definitely a huge selling feature when buying our home.
