I'm not the bride, I'm the self inviter (?!)
Ok so here's the background. A couple weeks ago I was in NYC and met up with this girl whom I had been talking over the web with and we have a lot of common interest so everything went well. We even met up twice over that weekend (along with the SOs).
On the first night while I was asking her about her wedding prep work, she asked me straight out if I would like to go. As a matter of fact I would love to (for various reasons) except at the time I told her I would check my calendar as it would be a long weekend but that I would love to go. The second night we were together she again said casually that she talked with her husband and if we could make it they would be happy to have us there.
After I got back to Toronto, I emailed her politely and mentioned that I may be able to visit again (and that I was free after august) I didn't say specifically if I would be free on the weekend of her wedding but I also didn't want to be too obvious about it. I said it would be nice to see you guys again etc etc and she replied saying the same thing (very friendly tone though)
So now I'm not sure if I should ask her straight out if I could go - I mean I'm holding that sept long weekend for her but if she can't have us (due to space of whatever, that's fine) then I can make other plans. (p.s. I know she is working on writing her invite envelopes now)
So, should I just ask her since she verbally invited me? I don't know if she was waiting for me to actually confirm or not! Or am I going to be one of those tacky self-inviter if I asked!!

I spent 3 days in San Diego and to be honest with you, I probably wouldn't go back. The zoo was really nice, and I enjoyed my visit to the USS Midway. But I didn't feel like there was a lot to do in the city itself. The gaslamp district is small and wasn't that lively the weekends we were there (but was already the most lively part of the city)
I would actually Recommand that you spend time in the small southern california towns (Carmel by the sea, Do the 17 mile drive) instead of spending a whole week in San Diego.

I find that the star-ratings are not quite the same. For example, Le Meridien Etoiles is supposed to be 4 stars (basically king Edwards hotel in Toronto) but while it was nice and clean, I would say its like a 3 star in north America. You may easily pay $250+ for something that is just nice and clean, but not luxury if you know what I mean!

I had a Simmons beautyrest before but for some reason I was having chronic back pain for years until I switched last year to the Zen body made by Stearn & Foster. It's a little more like tempurpedic (but not as pricey) and so far I'm loving it.
p.s. the first time we looked for mattress, I listened too much to the sales explaining how the mattresses were made (spring bla bla bla, etc etc) after years of back pain, I learned my lesson and I tried out the mattress, lying on each one for at least a good several minutes - some people do even more. I think that's more important than anything else.

I just attended a "neighbors get together" last night at my neighbors house! They had been living here for 20+ years and told me they decided to organize this because they noticed at least 5 new house owners in tw last year. I was pleasantly surprised to see at least 20-30 people showed up! (I think they invited maybe 30 houses, the whole block) and people were friendly and all. In fact, I would say most of them knew each others well (some were saying they play golf/hockey together)
Honestly, prior to last night I only knew maybe 3 sets of neighbors (but really just friendly chit chats when I see them) but I was truly surprised last night how close people are! Best part was that they all knew who we were because of my dog! I think maybe it is time for me to be more friendly with them!!

I for one, actually really disliked gifted schools/programs.
I moved to Canada in gr. 8 so never had any so called IQ tests, but I attended a high school that had gifted programs, and without the test, I wouldn't be in it (which is fine with my parents anyway) though I can say for certain I could do whatever enriched problems they could do and performed better than most in math contests. However, having spent time in an enviornment like that (where the school had gifted programs) I felt that teachers gave less attention to normal students (for example, they automatically wanted the kids in the gifted math programs to practice for the contests and would have time/classroom set up for them - but I'd have to ask myself and make sure I was given the information on where it would be, etc etc. what about other kids who didn't ask proactively like me?) In class, I also thought more attention was given to the gifted students (we shared some classes sometimes) and it was just plainly unfair to regular students. I transferred to another school after a year and performed even better without that sort of "competition" in school.
I was talking to some of my friends about schooling for my *future* kids and maybe because of my own experience, I don't think I would send them to gifted programs. If they were that gifted, they can take the UTS entrance exams and I may consider sending them there if they get in. (if I can afford it, lol) I figure you might as well be in a gifted "school" than just a program (which I find unfair to other kids)
Having said that, I've met too many so-called gifted/genius level people (due to the nature of my brother's group of friends.. people doing PHDs in pure math) one thing that I do agree with is that even genius kids need to study. They may not require AS MUCH studying, but they do need to study (at least for the level of stuff they're doing - like once you attend a very good university with other students who are, if not smarter, at least above average or close to you, you have to study too if you want to excel)
p.s. and yes, some of them are a little socially awkward. But part of that comes from the fact they're always in a nearly all-boys environment (whether it's CS, Math, etc, mostly boys)

There's SO MUCH to see in Paris. I don't even know where to start!
Louvre is a must, and I also high recommand Musee D'Orsay. There are other must-see sights like Arc d'Triumph, the Medeline, walk by the Opera house (Garnier Opera I think), Sacre Coeur is a must in my opinion, Hotel Invalides was nice too.
Shopping: I love the Marais district. Go to Lafayette if you've never been - yes it's filled with tourists, but it's kind of cool to go see it. I LOVE the food section in the grocery at Lafayette. Printemps (just beside it) is a good alternative. Both department stores carry known brands. The streets nearby have all the major brands as well.
Restaurants: My recent two favourites are:
Relais d'isle: very tiny little restaurant on the Cite island, reservation is MUST. But price is good and food is decent (like 20 euros or 30 euros for 3 courses)
www.lerelaisdelisle.fr/Restaurant Caius: very close to arc d'triumph, my local friends brought me. Menu is 3 courses for 49 euros, very very delicious and more a French-fusion type of restaurant. Decor is very nice!
www.caius-restaurant.fr/Some other very local and well-known bistros are La Regalade and Le Comptoir - which is honestly, the HARDEST-to-book restaurant in Paris. It's not expensive, but the booking is literally 6 months wait list or something. I've never been because I've never managed to secure a table there! It's tougher than a 3 star michelin restaurant!
And yes - subways/metros are the easiest.

Thanks for the support

I'm sure OP asked out of curiosity, and I have no problem admitting I might have a *slight* issue when it comes to purses and shoes. I have a shoe closet (not a huge one, but I took up the whole guest closet) and I went to ikea and bought (and built, MYSELF!) a billy bookcase just so I can display my purses INSIDE my closet (I know, so stupid, it's not like anyone can see it lol) maybe one day I should share the picture!

To answer the OP's question, most expensive I've spent is around $1850 and I have more than a few (but not all at that price).
Whether or not I would spend $1500 on a used LV - ok, the answer is no, but one very simple reason that I am not a LV fan. If I could get a used Hermes Constance for $1500 in mint condition, heck, I'd jump at the chance.
Before anyone starts judging me (I'm sure you won't, lol) I don't deny that I could put the money to "better uses". I also don't deny that I do love brand names and I know very well that a $2000 purse is not 100x better than a $20 purse. But I also splurge on food, and I know that a 3 star Michelin restaurant in Paris doesn't necessarily taste 5-10x better than another very good restaurant (5-10x depending on price). It's just kind of a personal choice! I also admire some of my friends who have a lot of nice savings built up and they can for example, buy my exact same house but only require lets say 1/2 of my mortgage. But so far we can afford this life style and whether my spending on purses, shoes, trips and restaurants are "better" uses or not, doing those things make me happier (weird I know) whereas people who invest or save or donate to charity, etc, do that cuz it makes them happier... so, I say whatever makes you happier

p.s. I do have some friends who are also into brand names, so I don't feel too lonely lol

I agree with the PPs, I'm all about location. Our house is about 90 years old and we had extensive renos done on the house.. but before we moved in. So I guess the question for you is whether you're #1 OK living in the existing house as is (Assuming you're not going to renovate right away) and #2 OK living with renos once you start
I think that as long as the important things (i.e. wiring) are done, the rest is more about decorations, etc. Obviously you may want to gut an older kitchen but until it's absolutely necessary, a little makeover will probably suffice.
I think the neighborhood is really important for many reasons. I love the fact we're about 5 minutes walk to a main street with nice restaurants and shops and 10-15 minutes to a subway.
ETA: I forgot to say that if certain features are important to you (i.e. having an ensuite, or at least two bathrooms upstair, etc) then you need to reconsider older vs newer homes. Most older homes in my area were quite small and there was no way of creating a second bathroom on the second level. We ended up getting a powder room on the main level (SO glad we did!!!!!) and there's a bathroom in the basement. However I know a couple of my coworkers who, while loved my renos, told me they just could not live in a smaller house like mine. I understand - because space is so scarce if you have like two kids, you'll have 4 people sharing one bathroom and with more than two kids they'd have to start bunking. A lot of the houses that we looked at in the current neighborhood were all put up for sale because owners NEEDED to find bigger space for the kids.

We did the opposite. When we moved to europe in 2008/9 we also had to decide whether to rent or sell. Having said that, we had a few other things to consider.
Our move came right after the financial crisis, so housing market was not good. Most people would have said to rent in that case - but I was more worried about finding good tenant and management office that I just didnt want to deal with the trouble. We were lucky however that my husbands company was paying for all fees related to the house - including the commission. Which is one of the main reasons we sold, because had we been responsible for the commission, we would have lost about 10-20k as well, but because his company took care of it, we made small money.
Do I think it was a good idea? I can't say it was bad. Considering that when we moved back, property prices were again on the rise, we probably would have made more money selling after we came back. But I don't know if it would be worth the potential trouble we could have had (bad tenants or bad management - we didn't have anyone who we could trust to act as landlord for us).

Nice brunch places: (my personal fav)
Boiler house (distillery district)
Lady marmalade (leslieville)
Le petit dejeuner (king and Jarvis)
If you don't mind trying other kinds of cuisines, I highly recommend going to dim sum! (like Chinese tapas for lunch) most are up north but dynasty (in yorkville) is very good. Cost is probably 25-30 a person.
For some more unique dinner experience I like sultans tent (moroccan restaurant with belly dancing shows) and embrujo flamenco (Spanish tapas). A recent find is Ruby Watchco (leslieville) where menu changes daily and it is $49 for 4 courses I think. It's pretty good!
For decent Italian you can always check out terroni (there are 3 locations)
Oh, another very unique but awesome experience is Guu, japanese tapa/beer house. Line up on weekend is crazy and no reservation taken, but it is so good that I would recommend anyone adventurous enough to try!!(not your typical japanese restaurant)
Another quick eat downtown is Khao San Road, probably IMO the best Thai restaurant in Toronto, again no reservation and 30 min wait is standard. I can go on with restaurants

At what point for me - a few years ago I was really unhappy in my job, it wasn't that my coworkers were not nice or anything like that. I just felt like I was not performing, I was constantly stressed. And one day I realized I had been so unhappy at my job that every single day I dreaded going to work, and I dreaded being at work.
It was at that point I pushed DH to go for an oppoturnity abroad in Europe (thankfully his profession allows him to move easily) and I decided to quit and enjoy a year of living in Europe. Sounds cool right? well, not so much once I actually moved there. Once I got there, I was missing my friends and family. I was bored (not working) and had language barrier (yes I took classes, but it's not the same). After a year.. (which included about 3 months spent in Canada, anyway) I decided I wanted to move back and start working again. I never changed my career, I just went to a new company and really loved my life back in Toronto. And I still do now.
So while I feel like my one year in Europe was actually one of the worst time in my life (depressed, etc.. wasn't much of an improvement from what I thought was a horrible job prior to that) I am VERY glad I tried it (life change?) and realized what I really wanted was to be back home with my friends (and a new job of course).
But if you ask me, I would say when I realized everyday I was just dreading going to work (even if I had a very regular 9-5 schedule) and unhappy 8 hours a day, I knew it was time for a change.

I'm going to the first 3 cities on your list this June. Can't give you any real advices yet but I've made reservations to go to the following places FYI:
Prague -
Nebozizek:
www.nebozizek.cz/en/restaurant.htmlsituated on a hill overlooking the city. I've heard great things about it and my friend who had just went there also recommended that I go.
U zlate konvice:
www.ukonvice.cza cave restaurant in the old town of Prague. Apparently there are only 3 or 4 such restaurants. The food is supposed to be just OK but I'm going just for the experience
As for accommodation, I booked Hotel Perla which has amazing reviews on tripadvisor and was only 79 euros when I booked. (located right in old town)
Vienna- Haven't made reservations yet but these are the restaurants I'd like to try:
Plachutta -
http://www.plachutta.at/supposedly famous for some kind of beef dish
Figlmueller -
www.figlmueller.atfamous schnitzel place in old town
Den 3 Hacken -
www.vinum-wien.at/traditional austrian food
Accommodation, we're staying at an apartment located in the old town. I think it was 150-175 euros/night
http://www.puzzlehotel.at/Wien/Zentrum/Familienappartement/Cesky Krumlov - the only thing I know is we're staying at Hotel Grand, not too expensive.

Food +1
No matter how nice the place is, if the food is bad (or very average) the place will not make up for it. I remember two weddings I attended.. before eating, I remember thinking they were such nice places.. (one of them had a outdoor-tent style sit-down area, quite unique. The other was in Niagara on the Lake, one of the nicest hotels there) but to this day, when I think of those two weddings, I only remember that I was not full at the first venue, and that the food was bad at the second venue.

Well, a nice hotel in "central" manhattan will easily run you $250+. I always use priceline but check expedia and booking.com first to see if you find something you like. In terms of "area", anything in midtown will be good. Generally speaking I would say anywhere south of Central Park and north of wall street (though I've stayed there before and will be staying there again, because it's cheaper.. but I've been to NYC many times)
Time Square is a nice choice, but it could get very noisy at night, but it is a very central location. I think I stayed at the Westin there once (probably $300/night)

Last time I went with a bunch of girls who had never been there (we're not kids, we're all in our late 20s) and we were just browsing in one souvenir shop when the sales came up to chat. When she found out it was our first time (well, not mine, but the rest of the girls) she gasped and said "you don't have the first-time pins?" then gave us a bunch and wrote down names & dates in the back. Then she gave us a bunch of micky mouse stickers too. That made my day!

I don't have kids but I've been to Disney World three times and love it.
Food:
- One place I love is the Sci-Fi Drive-in Restaurant in Hollywood Studio. But please book EARLY!!! Once I didn't reserve and even at 3pm it was at least an hour wait. Same thing for Crystal Palace (the buffet at Magic Kingdom) you have to book early else you won't get anything.
- Love the humongous turkey drumstick at Hollywood Studio!
Shows:
- If you can, try to catch all the fireworks/end-of-the-day shows. My fav. is Fantasmic but the fireworks at Magic Kingdom can't be missed. Epcot's was nice too.
- Same as PP, didn't care much for the little mermaid (but I'm sure kids will love them) though the Indiana Jones is quite fun
Rides: (I can only remember a few that I enjoyed or not liked)
- I love "it's tough to be a bug" at Animal Kingdom! Never gets old
- Love the Haunted House (CUTE! not scary at all) and Tower of Terror at Hollywood Studio
- HATED the Mission:SPACE (Epcot) Orange team.. (green is ok) the only ride that's ever made me nauseous and just really uncomfortable
- Test Track (Epcot) is fun, if you like high speed stuff
Stay on site if you can, you will really appreciate the magic hours and all the frequent buses. I've stayed at Pop Century, All Star-Music and the Port Orleans. All very good (the last one is slightly more expensive)

I've been to 3 DWs and I always gave something anyway (like PP said, I am one of those guests that still give) but I do give less than what I would normally give and I try to make it different. For one couple I gave a gift certificate to a really nice restaurant because I know they would enjoy it (I think I bought for $200, and we're really good friends, so had she had her wedding in Toronto I would have given maybe $300-400). Another one I think I gave about $100 along with other girls and bought the couple gift card to a mall, as well as jewelry/cufflinks for them. And the third one.. I was the MOH in the wedding, so I probably also gave around $200, plus I bought the bride-to-be a massage session before the wedding.
As PPs have said, I don't think ANY of my friends expected anything. They were all grateful I could make it to the wedding. If you feel the need to give something but unsure what to do, I think restaurant gift cards or a nice bottle of wine are always good choices.

FYI, Cinque Terre just went through a horrific mudslide/flood. Vernazza is still being rebuilt and Monterosso as well. Most hiking paths are closed. (However, I do love Cinque Terre)
I think for me it would depend on whether you plan on returning to Europe again to any of these places. i.e. if you spend the two weeks in Italy & Greece this time, are you never going to go back? I'm asking because I'll be going to Italy a third time this summer, but seeing another part of it. If you feel like you are only interested in whatever cities you named, then combine the two and go for it. But if it took you a lot of thinking/struggling to remove specific places from your list, then you should think twice and maybe just choose one country.

I've never read the books but saw the movie and really really enjoyed it.
I was kind of afraid it would be gory like Battle Royale (btw, never seen it, but know too many people that saw it and it was gory) but this was PG-13 so it wasn't so bad. For those who think it's for teens/young adults, honestly.. it's a cruel story concept (children killing each others). I liked it enough that I went online to read about what happens in the next two books!
p.s. I thought the casting was awesome..Jennifer Lawrence did an amazing job and Josh Hutcherson is so likable!

A nice watch - if you're not comfortable with the idea of spending a thousand on a watch, then buy lets say, a nice Tissot watch (something like that) that should run you about $500. Then I would use the other $500 towards possibly a couple nice pieces of jewelry (some ideas, i.e. Links of London)

Not sure if you're into steak, but while we were there (Beverly Hills) we ate at Mastro's and it was the BEST steak hands down. The price is comparable to Ruth Chris's in Toronto (so about $40-50 for steak without sides.. and I'd say about $100 p/p with sides and a couple of drinks) but it was just THAT good. (You have to order the bone-in filet, SO GOOD!)
Other than that.. we drove around BH looking for celebrity homes! I think I saw Jennifer Aniston's house (but it was completedly gated with concrete wall) though there are tours you can take that take you to see celebrity's homes/old homes. Pretty neat.

I think it's definitely ok to decline your son as a ring bearer, but I also think that, you should consider the possibility that her WP selection may have involved a lot of family drama - hence why she ended up going with people she doesn't even know very well. Having been in WB long enough, it seems like people are always complaining about choosing people they barely know to be in the WP simply due to peer pressure or pressure from family. Remember.. obviously not every bride will stand up for herself and start a war with family/friends, so it's possible your friend gave in and just decided to have random people in her WP to make her family or her FH's family happy.
As for the dress shopping, I have friends who bought dresses on their first unofficial dress-shopping trip. Also, it's possible her mother or FMIL insisted on going with her and she felt that it was too much of a family fair to include you?
I think asking your son to be her ring bearer IS a very big thing. She wouldn't be doing that if she didn't want to include you. And frankly, if you are close enough to her, you should politely ask her or tell her that you were a little disappointed you couldn't help in other ways.

GTA - Enclosed Porch/New Window/Contractor Info?

After my new house went through an extensive extensive reno last year (
Reno Post Here ) seems like it's time for another project.. lol
Now I've always wanted to do something in the front.. I was planning to replacing the brick wall with white railings but leave the two large columns
Current view:

Recently I started realizing we are running out of storage room, and now I'm thinking of enclosing the porch to create a mudroom so we can move some stuff there (like shoes, etc). Like this (but my entrance will have to be on the side)

I like my contractor but thought he was on the pricey side, so I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendation? preferably someone with a good design sense too. In addition, I think I'll have to change the windows to match the material (the frames).. I've always wondered if I buy windows from Rona and have them come install them, would it be cheaper than getting a contractor to do it?
Any suggestion welcomed!

Check out Le Meridien Etoile (
www.lemeridienparis.com/) see if it is still on sale or not - I just recently went and booked it for $170!(CAD) which is an AMAZING price for Paris, especially for a nice hotel. (It's a 4 star, though I'd say in Paris, a 4 star is more like a 3 in Toronto, but still nice enough)
Keep in mind, the kind of hotels you are talking about (Sheraton, Westin, Hilton, etc) in central Paris will easily run you close to $300 in June. A normal 3 star in June will cost between $180 to $250. It's not a cheap city! But if you're willing to do small family style hotels or 2 stars (don't be scared off by the fact it's 2 star.. lots of them are nice and clean, just on the smaller side) you can probably get something decent for under $150. One place I stayed at last June (very good reviews online) was the hotel new orient(
www.hotelneworient.com) It's only 2 star, but it was nice and just smaller (quite small, but cozy) and it was about 120 euros (about $150 CAD) just to give you an idea the cost in June.

I sleep in dark now, but as a child I always had my bedroom light on. So it's not like it's that unusual.. A colleague of my fathers had a home invasion (and I think they were tied up and robbed :S) and they never sleep in the dark now. (psychologically unable)

Thanks ladies! I called Blue Mountain and they said they don't have blades but they have mini-skis (I thought blades were mini-skis, I guess it's different) so I think I'll definitely ask for the mini ones, or short ones anyway.
The older I get, the more terrified I am at falling! I swear my first time skiing (15?) I fell at least 30 times in the day and I had fun.. now the thought of tripping and falling scares me, lol.

Ok.. so I'm going skiing with friends next weekend and I honestly only ski about once a year (when I was in high school I did more but even then I sucked!) so it actually is slightly terrifying for me to get back on skis/snowboards...

I've heard that skiboards (or snow blades) are much easier to do. I know people say if you want to get into skiing, use real skis, but no, I don't actually want to get into skiing seriously..I just want to have fun without falling every minute

Should I rent real skis or try the skiboards? (p.s. the idea of not having poles kind of scare me, too. Gosh, WHY did I agree to go skiing...)
