Quick version:
Evening of May 18th: Bloody show
Noon on May 19th: contractions started
11:00 pm: went to hospital and was told I was 1-2 cm
midnight: went back home
4:30 am returned to the hospital and was 8-9 cm
7:10 am, started pushing
7:38 Oliver James arrived and was 7lbs 12 oz
Long version:
My husband and I got married July 2008 and I was very antsy to start a family. DH wanted to enjoy some us time first but decided he was ready May 2009. I had the feeling that we would either get pregnant right away or it would take a very long time. It turned out to the be the latter. After trying for a year we got a referral to the fertility clinic but it takes a while to get in. In November of 2010 I tested and was very surprised to find out that I was pregnant after 18 months of trying. Unfortunately we lost our little bean a week later. We did learn we could get pregnant though.
We ended up at the fertility clinic in the Spring of 2011. We found out that our chances of conceiving naturally were very slim. The doctor recommended IVF with ICSI but said we could try clomid for three months since I was relatively young. Because of traveling plans throughout the summer we decided that September would be when we would start taking clomid.
In September I woke up one morning to some spotting and figured that AF would be arriving soon and we could finally start using the clomid. A few days later AF still hadnt arrived. I only had OPKs in the cupboard so I took one and it was positive. I didnt want to get too excited so I went to the store for an FRER. DH was in the shower while I peed on the stick. I shouted out Holy sh**! Were pregnant. We were in shock and so excited but didnt want to get our hopes up. A few weeks later I was spotting and figured that history was repeating itself. My doctor sent me for an ultrasound and we saw that heartbeat at 6w3d. It was a beautiful sight.
My pregnancy was relatively boring. Lots of all day sickness up to 20 weeks though.
Leading up to the birth I did lots of reading about natural childbirth. I was really hoping to have the baby drug free but felt deep down that I wouldnt be able to.
The last few weeks I was soooo ready for our baby to arrive. We had decided to stay team green and I was anxious to find out it Lil P was a boy or a girl. My mom really wanted to be there for the birth so she had booked a flight out for three days before my due date.
On May 18th I picked my mom up from the airport and got home to having some bloody show. I was excited that things may be starting up soon.
The next morning I woke up and brewed myself some spicy tea because I was very eager for things to get moving. Around noon I started having some contractions. We watched a Criminal Minds marathon that afternoon as my contractions got stronger and more regular. At 4:00 pm I knew that this was the real thing and we would be having this baby soon. At 6:00 DH went to drop the dog off at the babysitters. At 11:30 we decided to go to the hospital. My contractions were one minute long and five minutes apart. We got to the hospital and I was set up for a NST. She checked me and I was dismayed when she told me I was 1-2 cm dilated. I thought I would be so much farther than that! The nurse told me I would having the baby soon though. After an NST that showed the baby was fine and a walk around the ward for half an hour to see if I could progress some more the nurse checked me again and I was still 1-2 cm. She told me she could admit me or I could go back home. I decided to go home.
Once I got home my mom and DH went to have a nap while I laboured on my own. I tried to take a bath but I didnt find it helpful at all. I tried to sit on a big ball too but I didnt like that either. I found that I liked sitting on the toilet between contractions and leaning against the wall during contractions. I would count through the contractions to keep myself focused. At 4:30am I woke the two of them up and told them it was time to head back to the hospital.
The nurse seemed surprised to see me already but admitted me and then did an internal. She then told me I was 8-9 cm! I was so relieved and thought I would be having this baby very soon. The last couple of centimetres went very slow. I was mostly dilated but a lip of my cervix was being stubborn. The nurse tried to push it back and I screamed bloody murder. It hurt so much. At this point the nurse was trying to find the OB on call but he was missing in action. She seemed to be getting ready to birth this baby on her own. I was also using laughing gas at this point but I didnt like it as much as I would. It reminded me of being at the hospital with asthma as a child and having to take oxygen. I also couldnt count out my contractions as well when I was using the gas.
At 7:00 am it was time for the next shift of nurses to come in. I was so disappointed that my original nurse had to go. Im pretty sure I teared up. The two groups of nurses were whispering back and forth to each other and I demanded to know what they were talking about. They were talking about the lip of my cervix apparently.
About 7:10 the OB came in. He did an internal and he had to push the last lip of my cervix back. I again screamed and told him to stop but I guess he moved it because it was time to push.
It seemed like I pushed forever but I guess it wasnt that long. At one point they asked if I wanted to reach down and touch the hair. I said sure and after I felt his head I decided that I wanted this baby out right away and pushed him out in 5 pushes without any breaks. I remember feeling the ring of fire but I was relieved because I knew that meant I was close.
Once his head came out they told me to stop pushing and they took the cord off of his neck and then the rest of him slipped out. DH shouted out Its a boy! and they put him on my chest right away. I just remember him seeming so long. I wanted to have skin to skin for a couple of hours but he was very mucousy and wasnt crying to get it out so they had to take him from me and wiggle his arms and legs to make him cry. He was only on the table for about 5-10 minutes. The pediatrician and respiratory therapist came without the first hour to meet him because he was mucousy.
I ended up with a second degree tear. Recovery from that was worse than I expected. The first few days I could barely walk.
Im very proud that I gave birth without an epidural. I was really hoping to but felt deep down that I would not be able to. I know that things might have been different if I had had a longer labour than I did. I'm so glad I had the birth I wanted despite being in the hospital. I felt like I was really going to miss out because I didn't have a midwife (there are no midwives where I live). The nurses I had were fabulous and were supportive of my med-free birth plan.
I fell in love with him right away. He was so perfect. He started looking for my breast within half an hour and latched on well.
We were ready to leave the hospital in the afternoon but again the OB was MIA. He finally released us at 7:30 that night.
The first month with Oliver (or Ollie P as we call him) has been a blur. I cant believe how fast the time is flying. We celebrated his one month birthday a couple of days ago.

DeShawn - Thank you so much for my gift. The stuff for "Lil P" is so cute. I was just thinking the other day that we have only one pair of scratch mittens and that we should get more. My dog thought that the baby toy should be for him and even though I had it on the counter there must have been a leg falling down off the counter because he brought it to me a few minutes ago.

I just can't imagine seeing my DH for an hour or two from Wed-Fri, a few hours after he's done work on Monday and Tuesday, and for a few hours in the morning on Sat and Sun. This schedule would mean that you would have only a handful of days off together a year.

I also did French Immersion in the Carleton board at a school in Kanata (S.L). I started French in JK and continued until grade 12. I ended up with my French Immersion certificate at the end of high school.
After high school I didn't pursue French at all. When I graduated with my teaching degree I sent my resume to Fort McMurray. They had a French immersion job open and called to ask if they could interview me for that. I had the interview but my French was very rusty. They hired me and as I drove across Canada I practiced my French by reading and listening to French radio.
Languages are something that if you don't use it you lose it. I lost a lot of my French during those 5 years of non-use but I was able to get it back by practicing and being put back into a French environment.

I have managed to convince DH that cloth diapering is the way to go so I have started accumulating my collection of some types to try out before we buy our stash. We want to use pocket or AIO one-size.
I have bought:
- one bum cheeks
- two Rumparooz
- one Maude
- one hippybottomus
- one Fuzzubunz one size elite
- one Bumgenius Freetime
- one Grovia snap (+inserts)
- one Happy heinys
I still would like to buy one Kawaii to try out.
A good friend will also be lending me some of her stash. (Thank you K!)
Originally I was going to wait until babe was big enough to wear the one size but now I'm thinking of getting some newborn prefolds. (if anyone is looking to get rid of their's please PM me). What newborn prefolds to you recommend (the cheaper the better).
Is there a diaper that I really should try out that isn't on my list?
If you had to choose one diaper out of your stash which would you choose and why?
