At 5:30 AM with no traffic, on a 400-series hwy driving at 120+ km/hr, my commute it 30 minutes. If I drove when most people are going to work, I could easily double/triple my commute. I leave work before/after the afternoon rush hour and I have to add about 10 minutes simply because there are generally more cars on the road then than really early in the morning.
I LOVE to drive so I don't mind the commute but I have to be moving or I'm miserable.

I've been offered a used D300 body for $1150 (I know the owner and he babies it so I'm not at all concerned about its condition). It seems like a pretty good price to me but I thought I'd get some other opinions first.!

There is no evidence to support this as a treatment. Please see my post at the end of the following thread from a few weeks ago:
http://forums.weddingbells.ca/ubbthreads...rue#Post2171623I fully understand WHY MS patients are so anxious to pursue this, after hearing about this story, but you have to understand that it's been grossly misrepresented to the public. Unfortunately, the public has been presented with a highly INCOMPLETE picture of the story, and the average person isn't able to critically assess the information (only because they aren't trained to do so). I don't blame the MS community for being excited/hopeful and frustrated at the same time but I assure you that this is not going to be a treatment for MS in Canada in the near future. I say this over and over again...I sincerely WISH that this was *it* but it's highly unlikely. Sadly, people will hand over their savings to opportunistic clinicians who have no hard evidence that there's any benefit to it at all. Stories are already surfacing of patients who have gone to such clinics and paid to have the procedure done even though the doctors couldn't detect any blockages. But if you're willing to pay, they're willing to perform. It's really sad.

I've deleted people and I've been deleted (and I don't even notice until something jogs my memory about them....so we obviously weren't great friends to begin with). Meh.
If I forget who you are (on wb) then you're probably getting deleted; this also applies if we never interact. I've also deleted people when I learned that I didn't like them all that much, or when I learned that I didn't want to get to know them

.
Not everyone's going to love you, get over it (with some exceptions of course!). I see no reason to behave any differently on the board though. I guess I just don't care that much. High school was a long time ago for me, and I prefer to keep it there.

So, I've been really really busy and haven't been on WB much lately so I totally missed this. Thanks to eldender for mentioning this thread to me. I know I'm really late in joining the discussion but thought it might be worth it since there are a number of WBers who have been touched by MS in one way or another.
So, firstly, I understand why people are so enthralled with this story. The W5 piece was indeed quite compelling (albeit terrible journalism). BUT please, do not get your hopes up on this one.
First of all, this story has more holes than my DH's underwear (you had to have read an older post of mine to get that joke - sorry!). That's not to say there's 'nothing to it' but when he started out, Dr. Zamboni never intended for this to be a clinical trial so it wasn't designed as such, and let me be clear, it is NOT a clinical trial. Also, he is a former surgeon, not a scientist, so his interpretations differ greatly from those who are legitimate researchers (apples and oranges). His work with this project began as he noticed some of his MS patients had blockages in the veins in their necks, his wife being one of them (slight conflict of interest???). He started treating people experimentally before ever designing a proper study. Even he's not trying to convince the world that this is 'the cure' for MS. He's merely happy to discuss his observations in hopes that a proper investigation can be initiated.
Not only is iron toxicity (results from the apparent blockages) 'old news' in MS, it's really common in many disease mechanisms, but there are 3 really important faults with this study. This 'trial' was biased in that he was not blinded to who had MS and who did not (this is a very serious issue in clinical trials because researchers may then have preconceived expectations and the results often reflect what they want or expect to observe), almost 100% of the patients had relapsing/remitting MS so any improvement they experienced could have been due to a naturally-occurring remission which can last from weeks to years, and they were all on treatment regimens. Add to this the fact that no one else has been able to validate/repeat his findings; other studies have shown that such blockages occur just as often in non-MS populations. Lastly, these scans are not reliable. A blockage might be detected in a person in the morning, and it might not be detectable in the afternoon. They tend to be transient.
Now that I've said all that I want to add that I believe this is worth investigating (and I'd give up my research in a heartbeat if this was, in fact, "it") because despite all of the faults, his patients do, in fact, believe they are cured. Some of them had the angioplasty-like procedure done 3 years ago so it's unlikely that any kind of placebo effect would still be a factor. Even if it would/could help even a few patients, it's worth considering. The procedure is certainly less invasive than a bone marrow transplant, for example.
There are doctors and scientists designing proper studies to investigate this further, many of them in Canada. The MS Society of Canada distributed a LOT of funds a few months ago to scientists wanting to pursue this. But let's just say that there is something to it; unfortunately, it would still be YEARS before it would be used as a type of treatment. Diagnostics and treatments aren't changed overnight; it takes a long time for new procedures to be brought into practice.
This 'finding' has really thrown the MS world into upheaval; clinics are running hours behind schedule because people are using their regularly-scheduled appointments to discuss what is essentially a non-issue to clinicians (understandable from both points of view). This is a prime example of irresponsible journalism; I'm actually surprised that it ever aired given that no one else would agree to appear on camera to support his theories, and I'm more shocked that there was no one interviewed who refuted them (or if they were, it never made it to the final tv cut).
I have yet to meet Zamboni (although I hope to at a conference in October) but my colleagues that have spoken to him say that he's passionate but greatly misguided.
So anyway, I don't think we've heard the last of this story, far from it, but I'd like to caution MS patients and their families that this isn't likely going to be 'it' and to continue with their prescribed treatment regimen, at least until more reliable and properly-designed trial data emerge.
I hope that helped to shed a little bit of light on the issue. Better late than never?!?!?
Even though stories like this are frustrating, I'm really glad they result in discussion!

I know this isn't quite what you're asking for but we stopped in Cozumel on a West Caribbean cruise I took a few years ago. I actually found it to be 'tourism hell', with really pushy vendors all selling knick-knacky stuff (didn't see any box stores...but wasn't there that long and wasn't looking for that). Having said that, where we stopped was a port of call so essentially it's just cruise ships unloading people so what else could we expect?!? It's probably not the same place that the ferry you're talking about takes you.
If you could have a chance to see some Mayan ruins, I'm sure that would be well worth it, but you may be doing that already anyway. By the way, I hope you have a fantastic time!

So, I've never had a laptop and I'm at the point where I think it's time to bite the bullet and get one.
I have purchased 3 desktops in a row from Future Shop and they've all been lemons and I'm pretty sure I won't be buying another computer of any description there. The thing is I don't really know where the 'best' place would be. I'm thinking I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a mac (but I haven't decided for sure yet so all opinions are welcome) so the obvious choice would be to head into the Apple store. BUT money is tight and I can't help but think I'm going to get hosed in there.
So, where did you buy your laptop, are you happy with the service/machine, and do you think you got a good deal?? Don't worry, I don't need prices or anything, I just want to make sure I consider all my options!
TIA!

I always get dressed in the dark - I leave the house at 5:30 am so it's never light, and DH is never up that early.
I usually lay my clothes out the night before to save time in the morning and so that I don't have to search for clothes in the dark (or wake up DH by turning on the lights) so my clothes generally match BUT so often I find out half-way through the morning that I've got my underwear on inside out! First of all, this whole story seems kind of fishy. I'm sure she's been protested many times, what made Ottawa so different?!?! And on one hand she says she's not at all worried about her security, and yet it was HER security detail that presumably cancelled her talk. It doesn't add up for me....
More importantly though, I have a problem with censoring someone's voice just because we're not comfortable with what they have to say.
I think Ann Coulter is vile in every sense of the word but we are being perceived as having taken away her Freedom of Speech...and this makes me very uncomfortable. We should have allowed her speak (or at least boycotted her talk) and then dealt with her accordingly as we have laws against acts/statements of hatred. All we've done is given her more publicity and made a so-called martyr out of her. Like it or not, freedom of expression works both ways.
I'm a grad student at the U of Ottawa. Students received this email last night:
"On Tuesday, March 23, an appearance by Ann Coulter was scheduled on
our campus, organized by the International Free Press Society Canada and the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute.
The University of Ottawa has always promoted and defended freedom of
expression. For that reason, we did not at any time oppose Ann Coulters appearance. Whether it is Ann Coulter or any other speaker, diverse views have always been and continue to be welcome on our campus.
Last night, the organizers themselves decided at 7:50 p.m. to cancel
the event and so informed the Universitys Protection Services staff on site. At that time, a crowd of about one thousand people had peacefully gathered at Marion Hall.
Freedom of expression is a core value that the University of Ottawa
has always promoted, said Allan Rock, President of the University. We have a long history of hosting contentious and controversial speakers on our campus. Last night was no exception, as people gathered here to listen to and debate Ann Coulters opinions.
I encourage our students, faculty and other members of our community
to maintain our University as an open forum for diverse opinions. Ours is a safe and democratic environment for the expression of views, and we will keep it that way.

Gingy-
We're pretty-much the same as you guys. We have a general idea of each other's whereabouts but we don't keep tabs on one other. We've always been quite independent, even within our relationship, so we don't worry much about what the other is doing. I also know that if he was going to be extraordinarily late then he would find a way to call me (this was definitely something I had to teach him to do though) and it's the same for me. Otherwise, we see each other when we see each other

I get it at my salon or on Amazon.com and it's about $20 for a 350ml bottle.
I also use drug-store brands such as pantene and head and shoulders. I don't have a dandruff problem but it really does make my hair look nice (their commercials used to advertise this and for once it seems like the truth!).

Ok, so after a quite lengthy wait to see a doc, they assure me my neck is not broken

.
Oh, and Bridenstride, you didn't misread, it
was a routine fender bender. I'm not sure the headache has anything to do with it at all but I guess you never know. The doctor I saw prescribed celebrex for my trip, just in case, and said to come back if I felt anything other than muscle pain in my neck/back, and he said it'll probably be much more noticeable tomorrow, but that's not surprising. It's funny, my neck feels 'funny' now but I'm wondering if it's all-in-my-head. Ha!
As for my insurance, they have an 'emergency' number but I guess I just didn't think this constituted an emergency. I'll leave them a message just to be on the safe side.
Next stop, police station....

...and I need some advice.
So, it's not a crazy story - I was sitting at a red light this morning and some guy behind me just didn't stop and drove right into the back of my car (he said he was "totally distracted"). My car didn't lurch forward and hit the guy in front of me or anything like that and I just have (a lot) of damage to my bumper.
I got his name, phone #, insurance info, and licence plate # and we both went our separate ways. I didn't report it to the police though and now I'm wondering if I should have.
I don't want to call now in case I get in some kind of trouble for 'leaving the scene of an accident' or something but I also feel like maybe it would be in my best interest if it were on file. This has never happened to me before so I'm not really sure what I should be doing.....
My insurance company isn't open on weekends so I have to wait until Monday to do anything about it in that sense.
Anyone have any advice?
