One final point to mention before I head out for the day, this item, as it stands, is not a platform issue, nor is it part of the Policy Greenbook of the Wildrose, it's part of the Member Approved Principles and Policies.
A policy declaration is a document. It is derived, amended, and edited by the citizens who hold memberships for a party at the policy convention. All amendments are voted on by the membership and, as with any democracy, majority rules. The document reflects how the membership thinks the party should operate. It is considered when the party develops the policy it will act upon. That last sentance is the important one. Consider a party whose membership is infiltrated by people with a slate. The membership could then feasibly pass principles/policies that are contrary to the Party's goals. If the party were bound by such a document, it would be easy for an opposition party to ruin the party in question. Because of that, the document it is not worth much more than the paper it's written on.
What the actual statement says is this:
"What the Wildrose members believe is that the government should implement legislation protecting the "conscience rights" of healthcare professionals."

Dazed - We were extrapolating and talking about a hypothetical situation with a whole mess of presumptions. To my knowledge, this issue is only in the policy (not platform) in relation to health care providers and it has been mentioned verbally in relation to both health care providers and marriage commissioners. I engaged the example because I had a counter argument and the first part of my argument is paramount - the province has a duty to provide reasonable access to these services to all people. If Mr. X in town 2 wouldn't do it, A) that would be on record, B) the province would have to provide reasonable access to someone that would and C) Mr. X would have to tell you how to access that someone.
As for the abolishment of the AHRC, I'll have a more in-depth response to that later but will say that the WRA would like to abolish the AHRC and create a new division of the provincial court to deal with these issues.
Apples - I don't know what to say to that comment. These beliefs aren't limited by provincial boundaries or to certain political parties. I think you might be surprised by what people actually think about contraversial topics if they actually felt free enough to share those opinions with you. I'm equally surprised that in 2012, multicultural Canada, that we would continue to be so unaccepting that people might have different beliefs than us.

@snowbride08: I realize you're leaving for the airport so you may not have a chance to respond.
I'm curious why the thought process has to be black and white? All or nothing? What is wrong with respecting all people and not discriminating against them because of their moral position? Why should a person not be able to have a profession simply because of their beliefs? Are there not other teachers in the school who could teach sex ed according to the curriculum who do not have a moral issue with it?
There was recently a case in the UK where a nurse needed to pick up some extra hours. She was aware that a facility attached to the hospital performed abortions. She does not support abortion but paid no mind because it was not her area anyway. She was unaware that she could be scheduled there until the schedule came out and they had her working her extra hours over there prepping patients for abortions. She refused and they threatened to fire her. She fought the issue on the grounds of moral conscience and won. The fact is, she has the ability to perform her job. There are other nurses who are willing and able to work in that facility. The patient care is not compromised, nor has the patient been discriminated against, nor has the nurse been forced to go against her rights, nor was she forced to quit her job. By your statement, I'm assuming she shouldn't be a nurse?

@cherryblossom et.al re: conscience rights
First, it's not the WRA party who was accusing Kikki of being a plant, or any other thing. Yes, some of them are WRA supporters but the majority of WRA supporters don't agree with the backlash she has received. It's hypocritical to be a person who agrees with the rights of a person only to go off on a tangent criticizing that person for expressing them. She is free to have her opinion and I will defend her right to express it.
And now it's going to get long, so bear with me! Honestly, my first draft was 3 pages!
Disclaimer: What I write from this point forward is my opinion and should not be seen as coming from the WRA or their party members unless quoted as such.
I read Kikki's blog post (Wilted wildrose). She had an opportunity to start a conversation with the twitterverse about Conscience Rights and, unfortunately, it blew up.
From Macleans: One of the rights people hold most dear is the freedom to live according to the values they believe are paramountthat is, to live as their conscience indicates they should. For some people, those paramount values relate to ideas about the creation of the world, the supernatural, or the divine. The values felt most binding by others relate to environmental protection, paying homage to animals their culture depends upon (such as the buffalo or bear), or the ethical imperatives of social justice, such as the need to eliminate poverty. All such frameworks of beliefboth the religious and non-religiousare matters of conscience, and all need to be supported.
Kikki chose to make her stand on how conscience rights might affect same-sex marriage and patient rights. She holds LGBT rights very dear to her heart and the matter has become her hill to die on. Its my opinion that she willfully ignores the protection she is awarded by conscience rights and fails to recognize the hypocrisy in her position.
I believe this: Tolerance requires that every person is treated courteously and equally, no matter what his/her view; not that all views have equal worth, merit or truth. What I mean by that is that this incessant push for "tolerance" seems to focus so heavily on what a person believes and the assumed validity of those beliefs rather than focusing on the rights of the person. This type of focus breeds and condones intolerance in the name of tolerance. The Charter does not say that all people are equal UNLESS you believe XYZ. So to behave as though it does encourages the same discrimination that was being fought against in the first place.
The WRA policy in question (and statements that followed) deal with situations where marriage commissioners or medical practitioners find themselves in a position of conflict. A place where their right to freedom of conscience (s2) may end up infringing on anothers important right to be treated as equal (s15). We need to find a way to resolve this conflict in a manner that is fair to both parties. Running away from it and saying the topic is frightening doesnt help anybody. For the WRA greenbook to say that the govt should protect conscience rights doesnt mean that we do away with s15 rights. Not even close. Nothing Danielle has said on the subject is contrary to the spirit of the Constitution in that all persons should be treated as equals, that one person's rights should not supersede another.
Conscience rights arent something new to this province. Over the last 15 years, there have been quite a few times where the PCAA government has proposed legislation to uphold s2a (Bills 202 ('00), 212 ('00), 208 ('06)). I believe that Bill 44 ('08) was the most recent that passed that deals with upholding s2a in terms of education and a parents right to opt their child out. This passed while Ms. Redford was Justice Minister of Alberta.
So I ask you to consider this:
There have been recent discussions regarding legalization of euthanasia. Should a doctor be forced to help a patient die? The patient has the right to die, no doubt but does the doctor get a say in having to perform the act or is it not satisfactory enough to refer the patient to someone who does not have that conflict? The outcome remains the same and the rights of both are satisfied.
How about if our government decided that sex education should start in Grade 1 instead of Grade 4? Should a parent have the right to opt their child out?
Its s2 that is supposed to protect all of us from state coercion or actions that cause personal strife. That protection should be extended to everyone and not dependent on what guides a persons conscience.
Ill leave you with this one: 1988 R v. Morgentaler and Supreme Court Justice Wilson. Consider Wilsons use of s2 and how it pertained to the unconstitutionality of abortion laws:
The decision whether to terminate a pregnancy is essentially a moral decision, a matter of conscience. I do not think there is or can be any dispute about that. The question is: whose conscience? Is the conscience of the woman to be paramount or the conscience of the state? I believe, for the reasons I gave in discussing the right to liberty, that in a free and democratic society it must be the conscience of the individual.
________________________________________
As for the 4 thorny WRA candidates, people have opinions that may not coincide with the popular opinion. Remember, its our conscience that decides where we fall on the political spectrum. For some, we are more concerned about fiscal management than social issues. For others, social issues are a greater priority. What I mean by that is that there are social liberals within the WRA and PCAA just as much as there are social conservatives within the ALP and NDP (and vice versa). So, to answer a PP question, yes there are anti-gay and anti-abortion people running for the PCAA (and every other party).

I am a Wildrose supporter and am likely more in the fray than the average voter as well.
I jumped ship from the PCs when Stelmach won the nomination. Truth be told, I cut up my membership because I knew that it was going to hit the fan with him.
Regarding the funding for projects from the WRA campaign: I think we Albertans have become so used to hearing that there isn't enough money for XYZ that we believe it. I think that 41 years in gov't has created a complacency from our elected officials to act in the best interest of the people, rather than themselves. Financially, I would cite the massive pay raise given to ministers, the no-pay committee...I think there is actually plenty of money being misused and misappropriated and we would probably be shocked to see how wealthy our province truly is. I know that Danielle has a degree in Economics and has had 2 independent economists review their budget. Without seeing their numbers myself, I can only assume that they are relatively correct.
I know the Danibucks ($300) didn't come off very well. I'm not sure where I sit with it myself. But, I do know that it wouldn't happen until we are in a surplus position (again) at which point 50% of the surplus would go to the Heritage Fund, 10% to municipalities and 20% to the people. I like that there is appropriation for the future needs, for the current needs and for fun. Personally, I would rather see 10% go to the people and 20% to municipalities. That said, she promises that education and health care would be taken care of first - that's their priority, policy and mandate. So, as long as those things are taken care of and municipalities are being taken care of, and we are saving for the future, then I don't see much harm in giving back to the people.
Some have suggested that lowering our taxes would be better but Danielle has countered that saying that it would create another deficit if royalties went down. These payouts are one offs, when we can afford them. Another person suggested that we should have the option to opt-out or perhaps to purchase Alberta Savings Bonds so, if we want, the money can go back to the province as we see fit. She (Danielle) thought that was a great idea.
I personally know 6 of the candidates, luckily 1 is in my riding. They are all very good people who I have found to be reliable and trustworthy. I have absolute faith that they will act in the best interest of Albertans.
I have been following Kathleen (KikkiPlanet's) blog and twitter feed for the last few days and will comment on that separately.

I talked to my boss this morning and I guess he tried to bring in some stuff out of the states but they wouldn't ship it across the border.
He uses the Finish Powerball Quantum tablets in conjunction with a powder. He said that Reliable Parts (in Trail Appliances) has a Finish powder detergent that has low phosphates. He just throws a couple of tablespoons in the dishwasher. This combination has gotten rid of the problem.
Consumer Reports ran a test on different detergents and said that Cascade Complete All-in-1 ActionPacs were one of the best for not leaving the residue when used in hard water.
I've been using the regular Cascade action pacs and continue to have the problem so I'm going to give the Complete All-in-1 ActionPacs a try and see how that goes.

Okay, I've been doing some more reading on this subject.
My understanding is that currently, there is not always judicial oversight when it comes to the ISP releasing customer information. Some of the stuff I've been reading has said that police will go to the ISP with an IP address and, 95% of the time, the ISP will hand over the customer's name and address without a warrant. There goes the belief that this information is private.
The problem with the laws in their current state is that there is nothing that requires the ISP to release that information so there is the potential for there to be a delay if the officers have to seek out warrants. In addition to that, there are no procedures in place for the officer to report that a warrantless request was used.
This current bill would require the ISPs to give that information to an officer and would also require the officer to follow a set of procedures to report the warrantless request and a followup would then be done to ensure that there was a reason to have gone that route rather than wait for a warrant.
It seems to me that this uproar is more about everyone's perceived right to privacy when they don't really have it in the first place.

A couple of things came to mind as I was thinking about this today.
I get the concern about police having the potential to access our information without a warrant, but aren't we still missing a step here? Don't the police still need probable cause to request/access this information? Is there anything in this bill that has thrown that out the window? If that is the case (they need probable cause), and the Bill requires that an inquiry follows any access to this information without a search warrant, then aren't the checks in place to make sure that this doesn't abuse the average law abiding citizen?
Further to that, if this does undermine our privacy rights as citizens, then won't the courts come to that conclusion? Based on my previous conversation with MmeBruni, I understand that the courts will determine the constitutionality of the laws so, where is this slippery slope from which there is no return? Clearly if the law is wrong, then the courts will decide that, and the law will be repealed, won't it?

Interesting, I was just reading that case. Does this ruling not have more to do with the Crown than with the law?
Bill C-10 states that increases the minimum terms of imprisonment that must be imposed for certain firearm offences, particularly where the offence has been committed with a restricted or prohibited firearm, in connection with a criminal organization, or by an individual with a previous conviction for a firearm-related offence.
Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm that is loaded or near readily accessible ammunition (s. 95): Clause 7
3 years (1st offence)
5 years (2nd or subsequent offence)
Crown has the option to proceed summarily in all cases; if so, maximum is one year (no minimum)
In the case of this guy, who was showboating with a loaded weapon in his home, shouldn't this have been a summary offence rather than indictable? I think this speaks more to the Crown proceeding incorrectly than it does to the constitutionality of the law.
Thanks for the example though. In terms of recent events, I was only able to find the ruling on the Securities Act but that was only proposed legislation.

Here is a more in depth article that gives a better idea of the timeline:
article From what I've been able to piece together from various articles, the boy was reported missing on Sunday at 7:30p. They searched that night until 2:30a and resumed searches at 7:00a. The call for military assistance was received at 9:40a on Monday. The response received from SAR was that "no aircraft are serviceable to assist in search, & weather unsuitable". There are 2 Griffin helicopters in Goose Bay. One was down for regular maintenance and the other was found to have mechanical issues. Not dispatching one of the other 3 helicopters (2 in Gander, 1 in Greenwood) was at the discretion of the Rear Admiral.
About 11:30a Monday, the weather conditions had slightly improved and 2 civilian aircraft were dispatched.
It would be my assumption that, during this time, the repairs to the Griffin were done. According to one article I read, searches of this nature are under the command of civilian authorities (provincial police) and the military only plays a supporting role when asked and when available. Since they were not immediately available, and civilian aircraft were already flying, there was no longer a need to respond. The search continued through unfavourable weather conditions with ~60 civilians/RCMP doing a land, air & sea search.
At 9:30a on Tuesday, the RCMP changed the status to a recovery effort as they assumed the boy & snowmobile had gone through the ice (the snowmobile tracks ended at an open water point). At 3:30p that day, they found the snowmobile on an ice floe 11kms from his home. A call was then placed to the military for assistance at 4:30p, the now repaired Griffin was dispatched at 7:30p and arrived on site at 8:30p. The body was found 19 kms (in the wrong direction from his home) Wednesday.
____
The boy left his home around 1:30p, went to his Grandmothers, dropped off his cousin and left. It likely took him 2-3 hours to walk the 19 kms distance from his snowmobile. When he left the vehicle? Who knows. But if you consider that 7:30p was the time his parents called the police, he was probably expected home a few hours before then. Add those few hours to the 14 hours before the call was received by SAR, and you're talking about 16 hours that he was out there. Considering it was -13 (-26WC) Sunday night, I would hazard a guess that he was probably already gone before SAR even received the call. Even if they were able to leave Goose Bay immediately Monday morning, I don't think their response would have saved him.
I'm not saying that there shouldn't have been an effort and I don't understand the Rear Admiral's reasoning for not dispatching one of the other 3 helicopters. I'm only saying that I think this was going to end tragically regardless of response.

Amberm, I've done some looking and can't say one way or another if there is a country that requires registration of a foreign marriage. I think Thailand may be one but I'm not positive.
What I can say is that every Country that I have read about tells their citizens that, if they choose to travel abroad to be married, that their marriage will be considered void if they are in breach of the home Country/State laws. As such, if the marriage is not recognized, the couple would not be able to file for divorce, nor would they be eligible for the same benefits/priviledges/protection, or subject to the same responsibilities that are extended to those whose marriages are recognized.

We used to have relatively close incomes but he decided that he wanted to change careers, took a massive pay cut and, while he should be exceeding his previous income by now, he's still making about the same amount he did when he started in this line of work. As a result, we no longer have the financial security we used to have, we've had to make some serious cuts in our lifestyle to accommodate this and it also meant me having to go back to work 4 months after the kids were born. I also feel a lot of stress about it because I'm concerned that if something were to happen to me, even with my life insurance, he couldn't afford to look after our children.
Like justagirl, I'd probably feel better about it if he did more around the house than he does. It often feels like the financial and functional responsibilities of the household fall on me.

What about pooling the money together to buy one of the larger items and then using the balance to buy some other off-list, age appropriate items?
Eg. For the girl, the Imaginarium Art Easel at TRU is $59.99 which would leave $60 to buy some smaller items. For the boy, the Jolly Jumper on a stand is $69.99, so there would still be $50 to get other things.

I should clarify since I was the one who mentioned Lush.
I commend them for their use and manufacturing of ethical products both by not testing on animals and not using animal byproducts. I also commend them for most of their charitable work.
What I do find is that they are often hypocritical in the positions they take. Eg. They openly criticize Israel and will not open a store there citing concerns of discrimination of their "team members" who would have to work there yet they make no bones about opening stores in Saudi Arabia or Sri Lanka; Countries who don't carry equality laws to the extent that Israel does. I don't agree with their support of OneWorld - Freedom for Palestine or their funding to Plane Stupid.
I also don't agree with their position on the Canadian Oil Sands. There's some hypocrisy there as well relating to CEO Mark Wolverton and his family's dynasty. But my issue is moreso that they've jumped on a bandwagon that they can't seem to drive without resorting to the usual rhetoric and half-truths. It's deceptive to those who don't know better. And, as a Canadian, I take serious issue with any company who will desecreate a Canadian Flag as a means to promote their agenda.
Yes, that is a Canadian Flag that she is sitting on with "oil" (molasses) poured all over it.

Here's another:

So, while I realize this pales in comparison to Nestle (as an example) they do remain on my list of places I won't shop.

Muggins - If you write another letter to them, stick to the facts. Leave every emotion out of it and submit any piece of evidence you have to back up your position. If you can, find a newspaper article online that mentions the military blockade (or suspicious package). It would be best if there is a date on it, a time, even better if it mentions how long it was closed for. Also include a map of the airport that shows where your arrival gate was, the departure gate and where the blockade was so you can prove you couldn't get there. Also, if you can find something (itenery, ticket) that shows your arrival and departure gates it would help you to prove your points A and B in the airport and the times you were there.
I was successful in having AC refund almost 75% of my honeymoon that was totalled by Hurricane Jeanne just by arguing that I had paid for food for 2 weeks and only received 3 days worth; had paid for accommodations that included a bed but our mattresses were used to stop the patio doors from imploding and the bedding was used to mop up our flooded floor and block water from coming in. We had paid for a return flight but were forced to hand over $600 to the rep in the DR to get us on the evac plane; we had paid for a flight that included meals but they ran out of food before we were served. We arrived 6 hours late for our connection and incurred additional expenses for meals and accommodations... My registered letter to them was 13 pages long, was incredibly detailed, included pictures, copies of my receipts and had the names of every AC rep we had to deal with. I didn't mention the weather once or that it was our honeymoon, I just argued that we did not receive what we had paid for (or that we were charged when we shouldn't have been) and they sent me a big cheque (not even an airline credit). In theory, I shouldn't have gotten anything since it was an Act of God, but I guess they couldn't argue with my logic.
It's worth it to keep pressing it. Emails sent to customer service will get filtered through to the lowest man on the totem pole and you want to be dealing with someone who has some real authority, not the self-assumed kind. If you do move forward, cc your next email to susan.welscheid@aircanada.ca (senior VP customer service). It might add a little more weight to your complaint.
Good luck!

Re: Jack Layton passed away this morning :(
I am shocked. Jack Layton may not have been my favourite politician but his enthusiasm and passion for politics was so inspiring. What a loss....

I have a cat just like yours. He used to be the most loving guy until he broke his leg. The vets were really rough with him and he's been a cranky pants with strangers ever since.
He's a tricky one though. He'll go to strangers, he'll rub up against their legs and pretend that he's a nice guy and then he'll turn around, hiss, spit and swat.
If we have a large group of people over, he tends to be more anxious, so we do move him (and his brother) to the basement for the duration of our visit. Otherwise, we warn people and leave them to be responsible enough to heed the warning.
Funny thing - he doesn't have an issue with small children. Our kids (who were born after his mood change) and other children are able to pet him, rub his belly and play with his ears & tail without him getting violent.
Feliway hasn't helped us in the past but I might give Rescue Remedy a go and see if it does anything for him.

I also won't summarize stampede since it's been so widely covered now.
I'm not a huge fan of the rodeo because of the potential for animal loss but I'm also not a protester of it. I just do my best to avoid the newspapers for the 10 days just in case something happens. A point to note, the rules changed this year for the chucks where the outrider numbers were cut to try and minimize the number of run-ins that happen and make the heats safer.
Our stampeding this year is largely political in nature. We attended Harper's BBQ on Saturday, a few MLA breakfasts and I am the chair of the committee that is planning Jason Kenney's breakfast on Friday (15th) so we'll be going to that.
Overall, I love Stampede. We are going to take the kids down this weekend to the kids midway so they can do some rides and to, of course, get some mini-donuts! YUMMY!
ETA: the best part of stampede is the relaxed work environments: we get a half day for the parade, a day off for stampeding, no dress clothes (jeans allowed), can come and go as we please to attend breakfasts and bbqs...

I actually think that they should extend the debate to 3 hours and allow for 5-10 minute breaks on the hour. Thank goodness for my PVR! I really preferred this podium set-up over the last debate's round table. And (gasp) I didn't miss Elizabeth May.
I don't think the 6 minute one on ones were long enough and I don't think the 6 questions were enough to really get into the issues. I think there should have been time allotted to take the top 10 issues concerning Canadians and have questions from a more diverse group ask a question on those subjects.
Shenanigan - You are correct, Layton was also "misinforming" people with his number on Ignatieff's attendance - it is 59% missed(or 41% attended)for this most recent Parliament.

* Stephen Harper wasnt found guilty of anything. The Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs found that the government was in contempt of Parliament, in a report where neither Harpers name nor the phrase Prime Minister appears even once. The House of Commons then voted on a non-confidence motion and the government was defeated.
* Contempt of Parliament isnt an election-related crime. (It isnt a crime at all.) You wont find it anywhere in the Canada Elections Act or the Criminal Code. (You can, however, find a reference in House of Commons Procedure and Practice, which makes it clear that any misconduct can be deemed to be contempt and that its up to the House of Commons to decide how to punish it.)
* The Canada Elections Act is actually very specific about which offenses bar someone from office. They range from publishing a false statement of withdrawal of candidate to trying to vote more than once but they dont include contempt of Parliament.
