Ugh... this is always hard. I think that how much I give has changed over time for sure. When I was young and couldn't afford much I gave less (like maybe a $50 gift) and now would do something more like $100 for that kind of relationship...
But it's hard to know because everyone is different. If you're not tight with them and it's already expensive, I personally wouldn't expect that you'd give a lot, but again it depends on what you're used to and what you family/friends are used to!
Sorry... this is totally not helpful, is it?

So after I posted about my waffling with tattoo selection and my DH, I got it done last night! It was quick and easy (15 minutes and didn't actually hurt... honestly) and here it is:
And here's the original drawing:
I'm about 90% happy with it, although will probably ask for a couple of tweaks once the 6-week wait at the shop is done. I'd like to add a bit more definition around the edges of the birds, a little tiny bit more length/pointedness to the beaks, and clarify the line between the two because it looks a little random... but that said I'm pretty happy. It's really well centred for being pretty small!
The thing I'll find a bit strange, I'm sure, is that it's supposed to look like a pencil drawing, and I feel like people will think it's unintentionally messy or something. But hey - I like it, DH likes it, and there ya go.

SaraB - I don't think that painted cabinets necessarily look cheap... but rather that when done poorly they can look cheap.
That said, not everyone has endless reno budget, so you do the best you can with what you've got! I would maybe encourage you to speak with a few different experts at paint place (and to bring some of your cabinets and some pictures to show your kitchen and the lighting) and get a few recommendations from them to help.
Sometimes lighting makes all the difference too.

It totally was not super painful. It felt more like scratching a nail on your skin... and now if feels like I've got a mild-moderate sunburn, but that's it.
Totally not *anywhere* nearly as bad as I've heard. Far less painful than laser hair removal, that's for sure!!

Pics to come soon!

Last night on my birdfeeder there was a little bitty rat. It was probably one of the most adorable things I've seen in forever. I should probably have found it super creepy/dirty or something, but I didn't. It was ridiculously cute so I just looked at it, walked over and talked to it.
Yup. I'm that lady.

I'm planning to get that bird pencil drawing (or the artist's rendition of it) that I posted above today. I like it a lot and DH likes it, so I'm going to go with that. Win win!
And GG, I like your suggestion about looking at the wording beneath that in the future!

True enough.
I already did a bunch of research into what I'd wanted... and I downloaded the font I wanted and so essentially showed him a picture of exactly what I would get.
He was totally not enthralled.
Newest theory is that I'll get the birds picture (that I posted above) and leave enough space above it so that I can get my script later.
Wondering if maybe easing him into the whole thing will make it easier to get him on board. I know it's my body, but if he's going to be cranky forever about it then that's annoying. He's my DH and I want him to like looking at my body, and to think that the modifications I do to it are sexy and cute - not annoying and unpleasing... the same would be true the other way around with him.

DH actually likes this a lot (gasp!) and so an alternative option is to have the artist do his own rendition of this and put it where I would have done the script.
I *so* don't get how this is OK but script is weird to him, but it's definitely an alternative I wouldn't mind!

I've been planning to get a particular tattoo for 2 years now. It's script across the centre of my upper back and a few little birds around my back/shoulder. I've spent a lot of time researching and figuring out exactly what I want and then booked the appt. for Tuesday.
I mentioned this to DH and he got super cranky. He doesn't like script tattoos. I *love* script tattoos. He said he thinks the birds would be cute but wouldn't be interested in even seeing the other tattoo.
What would you do? Most of me says that this is for me and something I've wanted a long time. But part of me feels like if he's this unimpressed with the idea, is me getting it just going to be a sore spot forever...
I think it'll be adorable and hope he'll change his mind, but now I'm a little panicky and wondering if I should skip the words for now and just get the birds.
Ergh. Thoughts?

I'm registered for organs, and also for unrelated bone marrow donation, which is another great thing you can do... and you don't need to be "done with them" to donate bone marrow like you do with things like heart, liver, etc.

Ugh... whatever mine is, don't get it. I'm not an expert about which brands are best but would suggest that you look at how easy it is to clean, and how effective it is in getting rid of the fibre/stuff from the fruit & veg you use.
The one I got required WAY too much work to clean/maintain and so I've barely ever used it. Probably going to try to sell it on Craigslist.

Good luck on the juicing, though! I'm holding out for a Vitamix!

I found it sad but was glad to see people talking about loss... it's often something we're told (or it's insinuated) that we shouldn't talk about... as though there's something of which to be ashamed.
As someone who found my own (early) miscarriage to be something that caused far more grief than I'd expected, I find it comforting to understand how someone else processes their loss.
Still super tough to watch... bawled along with the family even though I knew it had happened.

Confession: I'm handy. There's a guy in our office who's supposed to do stuff like dealing with office furniture, basic building maintenance, etc. I had a new hutch for my office that I needed to get in and installed today.
So dude said he'd get it from my car, bring it to my office and assemble it today after lunch. By 3pm he hadn't arrived so I had to call him... I had to call him to get him to do everything since I had to leave no later than 4 for an appointment. It took him 45 minutes to assemble it (honestly wouldn't have taken me more than 15), he assembled it wrong (so I had to help show him how and fix it with him), and then he mounted it improperly.
By the time I left he'd just finished it and my office was full of junk. And I was annoyed. Really really annoyed. Grrr...
Super nice guy, so I feel like a jerk for being annoyed too - even worse.

I wanted to share with everyone (and I'm thinking specifically of those who have expressed a sense of being spiritually lost) something that would summarize how I think/feel about it all... but since I'm not terribly eloquent, I thought I'd share from a book I really enjoy, called Soul Cravings by Erwin McManus.
I copied out a few sections that (IMHO) seem to reply to some of what's been shared. It took a while to type (I'm slow) and since it's long for an internet forum (but really only 3 pages of paper) I thought I'd put it here in spoiler boxes so that those who want to read it can, those who don't want to don't have to, and so that if you do want to read it it won't take up you're entire screen.
If you're curious but don't want to read all 3, then I'd recommend the last one.

I'm so jealous that you're going camping, jitterbug!! Hope you have a lot of fun!

I agree with the chili suggestion. Another great camping meal (that's really impressive) is to make a potroast in a dutch oven. DH does this all the time with his friends and they're always impressed. We also use it to make lasagna, cornbread, peach upside-down cake, etc.
Dutch oven cooking is totally the way to go... super easy and impressive!
