I would love to be a SAHM, but with our daycare fees only being $320 per month, we can't justify it. DH may go down to part-time status if we have more kids, but SAHM is not in the cards for me.
It sounds like your situation is really doable though. I would totally go for it if in your shoes!

DD never really took a bottle, so we offered a sippy cup from a really young age, I want to say 8 months or so? She didn't figure out how to suck on in properly for a little while, but she got the hang of it. She also was drinking out of a regular cup pretty early on. It doesn't hurt to give your baby a cup with some water to practice.

Hmm, I'm going to say no for the ball also. I just picture it rolling into other people's rows, or the flight attendants being annoyed with it. I don't see how a ball can be much fun to play with when all the space you really have is your seat.
The longest flight we've done with a LO is about 5 hours, and we brought colouring books, felts, stickers, new DVDs (for our laptop), tons of snacks, and new books.

We started with introducing her to a little potty, that we placed on the living room floor. I also read her a book that was about a little girl who used a potty. We'd also have her not wear any pants or underwear while we were home and that's how she started to go on the potty voluntarily. It was a very gradual process, but DD slowly got better and better at remembering to use the potty. We just recently started potty training outside of the house and she's doing great.

Yes, people buy used dresses. I know this because I bought one myself! I was dress shopping at a store that sold both new and consignment dresses. I tried on my dress and it felt right. As I was buying it, the sales clerk said the bride was really emotionally attached to her dress and really wanted it to go to a bride who loved it as much as she did. That comment made me smile.

As much of a nuisance it might be to follow their rules, I kind of like the idea of it because it would give ME the incentive to pack healthier lunches. If quantity is the problem, why not just give lots more of the "approved" foods? I do NOT think they should be lecturing your son though!

I've been yelled at by two different people over the last few weeks. One was mentally unstable, the other was just an a-hole. I gave a little back to the a-hole guy, but kept my mouth shut with the mentally unstable one, because you just never know what they're capable of.
I do think that calling the police would have been over reacting.

I was just in E Children the other day and was shocked at how expensive the items were. Bo Bebe is the same. I usually see items I like in their stores, and then find them for way cheaper elsewhere.

Yes, I think your DH should definitely check it out in person first. I remember my first impression of the city was how "dead" it was. I've lived here for 10 years now, and have started to really appreciate what a great city it is. Very different from some of my favourite cities (Vancouver, New York), but it has a lot of great qualities.
Here are a few of the pros and cons for me:
Pros
- It's sunny here, even during the winter.
- Beautiful river path system for biking/jogging.
- Close to the mountains.
- Lots of stuff to do with children.
- A big city, with a small city feel. Everyone seems to be interconnected somehow.
- Traffic isn't that bad.
- Fun western culture (some people hate Stampede, but I love it).
- Great view of the mountains, even from the city.
- Chinooks (warm winds that make winter bearable).
- Summers are great. Not crazy hot due to dry climate.
- Rafting down the Bow River(a must do at least once).
- Tons of fantastic parks within the city.
Cons
- Long winter. Gardening season is very short here and not a lot of perennials survive the winter.
- While the C-Train is convenient for those who live near stations, you kind of need a car to make your way through the city. It's a pretty huge city to drive across.
- Not a ton of diversity, but that's changing.
- Extremely oil/gas centered feel. Lots of keeping up with the joneses.
- A little behind with cycling/recycling as a priority. For example, my hometown has been doing curbside recycling since I was a kid, and we just started this a few years ago.
- Compared with other major cities, we don't get the same touring bands/entertainers.
So those are just a few things off the top of my head.

Well, my advice to you is to distance yourself from all this family drama. If you're getting emotionally wrapped up in the inlaws and the SIL's plans, and it's affecting your life in a negative way, you should really try to block it out of your life. Tell your inlaws you don't want to talk about SIL's issues. Stick to your guns. If and when the situation you fear does happen, then you can refuse to be a part of the gong-show, right?
In the end, there is nothing you can do or say to change the situation. So, why waste your time and energy fretting and complaining about this person? I know you care for your inlaws, but really, they are partly to blame for allowing this woman to treat them that way. If I was really THAT peeved at the situation, I'd probably just limit my time spent with the whole lot of them, and get back to focusing on my fantastic life. Seriously.

I live in Calgary, and it's a very fine place to live. I don't really consider it a place where two people would move to for excitement and adventure though.

I'd probably try Montreal or Vancouver. There seems to be more culture in those cities. I'd consider Toronto too, but I *think* Mississauga is already quite close to Toronto, right?

I think we waited until about 5 weeks or so. Now, at age 2.5 she is massively addicted. It's pretty much become her lovey. I don't regret introducing it at all though. It's helped soothe her during many situations (car rides, airplanes), and I think it helped her learn to fall asleep on her own as a baby. We did go through that horrible phase where we had to get up a bazillion times a night to reinsert the soother, and I was cursing up a storm during that time. Once we got past that, the soother became our best friend.
Our rule has popped up because we would like her to wean from the soother. She is only allowed to have it when she sleeps now. I'm not super strict about it though.

I think you can look at it a different way, and not feel sorry for the child. First off, this child is EXTREMELY wanted. Secondly, the child will have a close relationship and support from his/her grandparents. Thirdly, most people have trouble surviving off the EI payments during mat leave. That's pretty normal.
Unless she has been given a short amount of time to live, or a prognosis that doesn't look good, I wouldn't use her illness as a reason to discourage her from having the opportunity to be a parent. You can't see the future. You could have a child and get sick. She could have a child and manage her illness well for decades. As a friend, I think you should support her, but make sure she's thought about the tough questions.

So can you recommend a brand or style of jean that helps in the tummy department, yet doesn't look like a pair of Mom Jeans? I usually wear straight leg jeans/skinny jeans.

I really like having long side swept bangs. I get them cut in a way that makes them naturally fall to the side. I don't get annoyed by them, until they get too long, then it's time for a trim. I like having bangs because they make a pony tail hairdo a little more put together looking.

I was quoted over $20,000 for one.

Some of those professional garage building companies charge a lot of money. I have friends with new builds out in Airdrie and they are buying a package from Totem themselves. The builder prices for a garage were really steep too.
We did the Totem package thing too. We still have to do siding, but I'm pretty sure we only spent around $6000.

I would tell my kid to let her friend call our daddy, "daddy" too. Saying "you don't have a daddy" is hurtful, so I definitely would let my child know it's not a nice thing to point out.
