It's with a heavy heart that I write this post.
As you know, I took over as "the new Admin" with a great deal of optimism a few months ago, waded my way through the checkered history of these forums and learned slowly both the software that ran it and the community that had once spent so much time together on this site. I had great hopes of restoring people's faith in the forums, finally fixing issues like the font sizing, getting a "Miscellaneous" forum on both sides as well as just adjusting to a better split of the forum topics so that
both halves of this community felt well represented. Rebuilding the community on good faith.
However, the reality is this: since the split of the forums in April, over 90% of the community traffic has gone away. Scores of our members, once devoted to this community, felt disheartened and quietly (or not so quietly, in some cases) left. While it is always possible to rebuild, after looking critically at the forums over the past few weeks I've come to realize that this is no longer a case of rebuilding faith. In truth, we'd have to rebuild the community from scratch, with all new members.
Unfortunately, this puts me in the difficult position of having to make a choice about the future of these forums: what's best for the Weddingbells and Canadianfamily brands online, taking into account our available resources.
On October 31, 2012, both the Weddingbells forums and the Canadianfamily forums will be shutting down permanently. What this means for you:
1. If you're a relatively new forum member, I am sorry! This is a real downer to hear about a community you just joined and had great hopes for. Please take the time this month to sift through the forums for information and make note of the helpful tips and information here.
2. If you're an old-timer with us for years, I'm similarly sorry. Watching the changes over the last six months must have been tough for you indeed. If you have favourite posts, threads or information you've left or gleaned over the years, this is the time to "back them up" to your own computer for reference.
3. If you're someone who has left and are hoping to get your account, old posts or other information deleted, you now know when that information will be gone: October 31, 2012. We will not be deleting any old accounts over the next month.
Finally, I'd like to ask you to join me in thanking the moderators (
Ms_Roc,
Nat&Phil,
FeministSprig,
paper_bag_princess,
countinggirl and
MrsMuffin) as well as our "Queen of the Forums"
FriendsFirst for the incredible job they've done over the years. They helped to shape and inform this entire community - these forums would not have been the same without them, and I will always be deeply in their debt for the kindness and help they offered me as I was learning the ropes here, and for keeping the community going for months during the change even when they had little support or guidance.
If you're looking to find a community to replace the one you knew here, I know that many of our former members can be found at:

A reminder to all:
1. As Jay said above, deleting your profile is not a right; everyone here posts in full view of the public in a commercially owned forum. The best rule of thumb when it comes to the Internet is that if you want it kept private, don't put it on the Internet.

2. Deletion requests will NOT be allowed in the forums themselves and will be removed. My reasons for this - which I really do believe are fair - are outlined above.
3. Deletion requests will ONLY happen if you private message me, Admin; it will only happen on Sunday mornings so as not to take the forums hostage. I can't promise EVERY Sunday things will get deleted, as sometimes I am out of town, have out of town guests or some other critical activity on Sunday mornings

- but if you request it, I will get to it within a week/few weeks.
Am closing this thread, folks, to prevent more misunderstandings. Thanks again!

As some of you may have heard, there's a new Admin in town.
The former Admin, Chris, left in June and I'm the new Executive Producer for Weddingbells.ca as well as CanadianFamily.ca and Fashionmagazine.com.
(waves) I'm Angie.
And while I'm still shiny and new, here's what I do know:
1. There's a LOT I still have to learn about both the WeddingBells and the BabyBells communities.
2. There have been a lot of slipups in the past - with communication, with how the forums were split, with the constant (or not so constant, as the case was) presence of Admin, and how user complaints were handled by the folks at St Joseph Media, the company who owns all of these sites.
3. Many of you are still enjoying the community, but there are also some of you that are frustrated with the situation.
I can't promise to be perfect, but I do promise to do my very best to help here. The truth is that I really believe in community - as I said in a different thread, I believe in communities like this not because they're great business bets (in fact, they make little money at all) but
because of the value they provide. I've been a member of several different communities over the last 16 years online (yup - dating myself there, I know) and I know firsthand how much they can mean, particularly when you're frustrated or out of your depth or just looking for someone who understands or has ideas that might be able to help.
I want, very much, for both WeddingBells and BabyBells to be that very thing for as many of you as possible. I'm realistic - I know I can't please everyone. But I'm going to try to be
good and
helpful, if not perfect.
I hope you'll come along with me - but more importantly, honestly,
I need your help.
The truth is that you, sitting right there, know better than I do what we really need to make this community tick. I need your feedback, your input, your ideas, your venting, and the sooner the better.
Please share your thoughts in this thread OR by sending me a private message, if you prefer - what can I do, today, tomorrow, in the next month, to help improve this community and to help you feel safer, closer, and more connected?
Three more things before I finish this loooong post:
1. Font sizes: I know that some of you are still experiencing issues with huge fonts, but I can't see that. My Internet Explorer shows the fonts as fixed. I spent half a day hacking around in the back end fixing each font painstakingly - but I guess it didn't work in older versions of Internet Explorer.
I will still try to get this working but odds are if you're still seeing huge fonts, you're using a very old version of IE (7 or earlier - which was released in 2006). That also means the browser you're using is potentially also very insecure, which is a Bad Thing in the world of 2012 and viruses and such. I will encourage anyone in this situation to consider upgrading your browser or giving either Firefox or Chrome a try. They're both free and much safer than an older version of IE when it comes to security.

2. Deletions: As I mentioned in another thread, yes, we
can delete your account, but I'm hoping that you'll give us a few weeks or a month to see if we can turn this around for you before you decide to leave. If you do decide to leave, please know that
Private Messages to myself and/or FF are the only way to request deletions. After today, deletion requests that go up as posts will be deleted. I hope you understand; it's kind of like standing in the middle of a bus (think: Blast From The Past movie) and yelling to the driver that you want to get off now.

I don't want those to disrupt the flow of discussions around us, so let's keep those requests directed at me.
3. Moderators: Folks, for far too long and far too often, your moderator team has been an amazing force of 100% volunteer effort. All because they love this community, believe in this community and all of you, and want the best for it. They're an amazing bunch of women and I am incredibly lucky to have walked into this position with such a force in place. Please, please - take a moment and thank them with me. They do an incredible, largely thankless job and it is because of them that things didn't completely fall apart around here while Admins were off changing jobs. *smile*
Anxious to hear your ideas, folks. Fire away.

Lauren_b, yes absolutely I can delete your account. I do not have that email in my PM box or I would have already deleted it. I am up to date with requests (other than those that requested it today... sigh) all the way back to two months before I started here.

...HI! to everyone who greeted me.

I'm a day late but writing a hello message to everyone as we speak.
To anyone else wanting to delete their accounts: I'll do it for you, though it may take a few days.
BUT!
I'm hoping that you might give me a few weeks or a month to see if we can make this a more responsive, a more Admin-involved, and more happy place to stay, and discuss. I know that the past is littered with good intentions but a number of slipups.
I can't promise I'll be perfect but I CAN promise that making this community work is one of my priorities. Not because it's a great business bet but because I really believe that community is important and I know how often in the past communities have helped
me through rought times.
More soon...

We have fixed the problem with the "Notify" link at the bottom of posts. The link actually worked fine for the first time a user clicked it and the notifications were received. The error only came up if someone tried to click it a second time. We have tested it on WB and CF forums and all appears well but please report it if you continue to see a problem.

As requested, these are the issues we have collected based on member feedback. If we have missed any, please reply and let us know. Please note: the priority are items that prevent actual use of the forum (i.e. errors). We've heard the opinions about the CF colour scheme and those we'll deal with after the pressing issues.
1. When not logged in, the list of CF boards at the bottom of WB is not complete (TTC Alternatives and Relationship Rescue are missing).
2. On CF boards, avatars are being distorted.
3. Possible issue with "Remember Me" checkbox when logging in. Some members report it works opposite as intended (i.e. to stay logged in, member unchecks the box)
4. Clicking the "notify" button on any post a second time will result in an error page (first time clicking the button works fine)
5. When looking at watched lists, I click on a bold thread (that has new posts). If I return to my watched list, the thread is still bold but I've read it already.
6. Members should be able to log in on WB or CF and stay logged in if switching over to the other.
7. Vhen looking at watching threads and clicking on a bold thread, it takes you to the first page, instead of the new post (both WB and CF)

1. When clicking on any of the main forum heading names (i.e. Planning Rooms, Babybells, etc), it used to show an error. That has been fixed.
2. Also re: those heading names, when clicking on one in CF it would show all boards in one list. Also fixed.
3. We're working on the avatars in CF: they're being stretched for some reason. Should be fixed soon.

We're hearing a lot about the look and feel of the CF forums. I don't think anyone (us included) is satisfied quite yet so we'll continue to work on it. Nothing is ever final online so we're big believers in putting a first draft out there and then improving as we go.

UPDATE: bugs fixed
1. On the CF forums, anyone who doesn't want the CF header (logo, navigation) to appear you can go to My Stuff > Edit Profile and there's a new checkbox for "Hide Canadian Family header and navigation". This will remove everything above the forum.
2. "Hop to" dropdown should now be showing all boards regardless of which forum you're on.
3. Active Topics should now be showing on CF (the page was blank before).

We've made note of all the issues here, and currently putting them in order.

We have several threads where members are reporting bugs since splitting the forums between Weddingbells and Canadian Family. Please use this single thread, only this one will be checked for new issues.
The following are the major ones our list right now:
1. New windows/tabs opening when going back and forth between WB and CF. ***FIXED
2. Active Topics not working on CF.
3. Logging in on one forum should keep you logged in if traveling to the other.
4. "Hop to" dropdown at the bottom of forum pages not listing all boards.
5. Some graemlins (smiley faces) not working properly.
6. Emails sent from "watched" threads/boards do not contain sender information.
7. When returning to a forum, members are taken to the first post instead of the latest one.
8. Google Ads appearing above signatures

UPDATE: We're going to push the changes to next Tuesday, March 13th.
The main info page has been updated:
http://www.weddingbells.ca/blogs/forum-update-info/We're trying to squeeze in some minor changes based on what we've been hearing in this thread. The difference is only a few hours but we have a long-standing rule to not make significant changes either 1) just before everyone here leaves for the day or 2) just before everyone here leaves for the weekend.
That means we can't do it too late tomorrow afternoon and Thu/Fri is just too close to the weekend given how sensitive all of this has been with everyone. We'll use Monday to review and continue testing, making Tuesday the next available day.
Sorry for the late notice but we thought we would actually make it for tomorrow. And we probably still could but it would feel like we're rushing it and that's the last thing we want.

I've been following the conversation through all.18.pages and I'm hoping everyone sticks around through the changes and continue to give us feedback. Like I said before, it's not going to be perfect right out of the gate. I expect to have some hiccups and some confusion. But if you stay with us and help us improve, I promise we'll hear all the feedback and implement as much as we can. We already have a list of new boards from earlier in this thread.
Taking things one step at a time, let's get through launch and then we'll look at how we'll set up those new boards and what they'll be called. I should say again: nothing will be deleted. If something appears to be missing, it just might be in a different location.
Our team is still working on a few things leading up to Wednesday. I'll report back more information when I know more.

It sounds like most people are taking the wait-and-see approach. I think that's good considering that we're doing the same. The great thing about working online is that few things are permanent (embarrassing Facebook photos notwithstanding) and we can mold and shape things as we go.
It won't be perfect from the outset. In fact, I'm expecting that we'll spend a good week tinkering based on feedback. It might be look and feel, or ads, or specific boards, or new boards. We're taking the long view on this and would love to hear input to make it better. Can we please everyone? No, but we'll try really hard to do the best we can.

This discussion has been invaluable, thanks again to everyone for participating, even if you just left a single comment. I really wish I could answer everyone individually, but I think a number of good questions/concerns have been raised and I'd like to get to them sooner than later. Here goes, in no particular order:
Ads: we won't be showing ads for baby stuff in boards where it would be clearly insensitive. I understand that at times we might appear to be this faceless, ambiguous thing called "SJM" or "Admin" but it's worth saying that we're also a group of people (mostly women) who share many of the life experiences of the members in the forum.
Parenting forum: the real point was made by a number of you in this discussion, that the forum is what you make of it. From day one we haven't told members on these forums to stick to talking about weddings. We're not going to force anyone to talk about kids or being parents or politics or beluga whales.
"We're for parents": a number of you felt this was alienating. It was only in reference to the magazine, its editors and its target audience. The forums are a completely different thing, again, it's what members make of it. If you're uncomfortable with a particular choice of words, we apologize, but I want to make sure the overall message isn't lost, which is: we really want your participation.
Miscellaneous Board: a bit of repetition here but I want to make sure this is clear: we don't want to take away any of what you have here. But even Mariposa_10 said that she was on the boards for almost 2 years before going into Misc because it didn't sound like anything she would be interested in (and now spends half of her time in it). What if 'Miscellaneous' was called something more descriptive of what it is like "No Kid Talk Allowed" (that particular wording was off the top of my head, not an actual suggestion, unless you think it's a good one)? Or what if it stayed the same? Or what if we created a new section?. The point here is that we're hearing the concerns of those of you were are child-free. I'd love to hear some more constructive suggestions on how we can make it better.
I know there is a lot of skepticism and a number of people already thinking the worst. This is easy for me to say but I would encourage everyone to take a wait-and-see approach knowing that we can continue to make improvements after the fact, with input from all of you.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to weigh in on the upcoming changes. The announcement that some things will change is creating some understandable angst among some members here and that's the last thing we want.
It has taken a few days, but we have read all the comments in the forum and submitted through our online form. We'd really like to respond to everyone individually but in the interests of time, we have posted the common questions to our information page with some answers.

In order to troubleshoot the issue with Malware here on the WB forums, it is difficult to pin point exactly how and why it's affecting a users computer.
It could be a number of reasons. We are currently not receiving any Malware detection on the forums. If you are still receiving warnings you should:
- Be clearing your browser cache.
- Updating your browser. (Internet Explorer's security isn't as strong as Firefox or Chrome)
- Deleting your internet cookies
- Running Spyware and Anti-Virus Software
- Potentially re-install your Operating System software.
The Wedding Bells Team apologizes for any inconvenience this has caused users. If any user is worried about their computers, please be advised that you should not be coming back to the forums, because if your computer is infected, your computer can potentially attack the forums again.
It can also mean that the Malware is now causing every site you access problems. Anti-virus programs, browsers and Operating Systems vary and can cause any manner of issues. Please be patient and aware that malware is a computer virus that has a mind of it's own.
If you are receiving warnings, your computer is infected and this is not a forum issue.
Thank you for being patient and understanding with us.

For all users who are concerned about viruses and the safety of using the WB forums:
Yes, unfortunately we were the target of some mischief that resulted in a corrupt file within the forums. That file triggered the "malware" warnings you were seeing. It seems the problem first showed up on Saturday, Dec 10th and we discovered it at the beginning of business that following Monday. We found the source of the issue and fixed it that morning, with no problems since.
This has been the first of such problems in almost 10 years of this forum. Unfortunately, there is an element out there who inflict these kinds of issues on sites like ours and we attempt to address these problems as quickly as possible.
We apologize for the late notice and update in this matter. We're still in the dark about most of the details including why and how it happened. What we do know is that it has been fixed and measures have been put in place to prevent it from happening again.
Thank you for sticking with us and please let us know if you receive similar messages in the future.

Hello forum,
I debated whether or not to do this, but figured I should since the 'tone' of Admin posts will be different soon.
After five years, tomorrow is my last day at Weddingbells/St. Joseph Media. When I got the job I was really not prepared for the forum. I know a bunch of you will be glad I'm gone, but I tried to do the best job I could with very limited resources and I leave feeling pretty good about things.
Thank you to the current and past mods - especially Ruth - without whom I probably would have run away screaming years ago (and would probably never want to get married).
It has been an eventful, informative couple of years on here. Thanks for making my job that much more interesting.
---
Sidebar: any Admin-related requests will probably take longer to be processed for the next couple of weeks, but there is an interim person taking over to do the usual name changes/account deletes/etc. I guess I should switch out my Jasper avatar too.
ps. Just for kicks I'm just going to post this graphic again, because I find it pretty funny.

Alright forum, this has been a long time coming. We've got to talk about signature sizes. The majority of you have nothing to worry about here - most are just fine.
But there are some users where their signature is bigger than 90% of posts - this is actually quite a large source of complaints.
In order to make the forums more readable, reduce clutter and bandwidth, here are some new guidelines:
members are limited to a maximum of 3 lines of text, in addition to 2 of the following:
- one (1) "blinkie" no larger than 150 x 20
- one (1) "ticker" no larger than 400 x 98 (2 mini-tickers fitting on a single line will be counted as a single ticker)
- one (1) "smiley" or small image no larger than 200x200 pixels in dimensions and no larger than 20 Kb (20,480 bytes) in file size
To clarify, Maximum 2 means:

Friendly reminder: no links allowed.
As usual, just use common sense. But if you have a whole bunch of tickers and also a bunch of pictures, consider making some smaller or removing them outright. I'll give this till Monday and then the mods will start doing some editing.

But if you have ideas for one at 20k, let me know and I'll put one in. It should automatically apply to all users.

Lets all take a look at this wonderful graphic I made.

The drama cycle exploded last night. We've handed out a whole bunch of time-outs and had to delete a whole bunch of threads.
Here are some things to consider:Making multiple threads to ask why other threads are being deleted - this is not a good idea. This perpetuates the cycle.
Calling this forum and the mods a fascist regime - do I even have to say this? Not a great idea. If you truly feel this way, this might not be the best place for you.
Rule ReviewMembers who choose to dispute Weddingbells decision to remove a post by reposting similar topics and grievances can and will have their membership revoked with or without warning.
Things to keep in mindThis is an internet forum. Please - if you feel yourself feeling real anger over it - take a step back and a deep breath. It's the internet. It's not worth it. This is when time-out bans happen. A step back can be good for the blood pressure.
We cannot please everyone - there were probably threads and posts lost in the mix last night that were deleted that maybe shouldn't have been. While this is unfortunate, it was also not intentional, and there's nothing that can be done about it now.
I was not here last night to see it all go down. But if you have any questions or concerns about the policies of this forum, ask here and I'll answer as best I can this afternoon.
