We just came home from Kauai last weekend. We stayed at the Nihi Kai Villas in Poipu. It was a very short walk to Brenneke Beach for boogie boarding, and then another 2 minute walk to Poipu beach for some good snorkelling.
We were in Kauai for a family wedding at the Hyatt in Poipu. DH's cousin's family rented a 4 bedroom house, that also came with a pool. It wasn't a quick stroll to the beach, but only took us 10mins to walk to from our condo to their house.
Poipu was great, nice and quiet. We drove to the north shore one Saturday and had an excellent time snorkelling at Tunnels beach.

Thank you! My final answer to them was 'no', which explains the lack of even saying goodbye at hang up and sounding disappointed. Which I totally understand. But it was unprofessional to act that way I think. I figure, when you ask somebody something like that, the answer can only be 'yes' or 'no'. You have to be prepared for both!

Interesting, and I had a little giggle at the article too.
Both DH and I like video games. We let the kids play a little Mario Kart before bed every few nights around here. They watch DH play his hunting games. We don't have any that kill people, and they know what hunting is, as DH is a hunter. So games where we shoot video game turkeys or deer isn't weird to them. It's not like we hide the dead game animals that DH brings home

I agree with reading the back of the game. Just like movies, there may be stuff you didn't think about!

This year, I let DD choose who to invite for her 6th birthday. I ended up booking a gym, where she could invite up to 11 kids (including her brother). She ended up choosing half school friends, half hockey friends.
Prior to her 6th birthday, we had invited our friends and their kids. Although, none of our friends had kids her age, they were all younger. So she didn't feel inclined to invite any of them to her party this year.
I made her cake, and I made hockey puck sugar cookies...then bought the rest of the stuff to go in the goodie bags.

Take him with you...then you can just slip the insert out of the skate and see if the skate fits. My DD just got new skates on Saturday for hockey, after wearing the same pair for over a year. Her street shoes are a size 12, but she wore size 9 skates up until now. We just bought her a new pair of size 11 skates, because the skate she normally wears, the sizes for this year seem to fit a bit different. Different brands will fit differently as well. DS has skinny long feet, while DD has short fat feet.

We have big tupperware tubs of emergency food, water etc etc in our basement. DH replenishes everything once a year, we take out the stuff that is there and put all new stuff in. When the kids were little, we always had formula and toddler milk powder in there too. We have a wood burning fireplace in the house, so we also stock up on plenty of firewood.
So once a year, I use up the giant jugs of distilled water in our coffee makers. The small water bottles get taken camping to use up. And the canned stuff gets eaten here and there during camping and hunting season. Expired meds get taken to the pharmacist (my dental office gets free Advil samples a few times a year).
We also have strange-ish emergency items...like a body stapler thing

Ya never know if somebody needs emergency stitches...or if DH falls during a hike and is pouring blood out of his knee

vrbo.com is great for renting condos.
We went to Disneyland two winters ago, at the end of Feb/beginning of March. Evie was 4 and Owen was 2. We went with two other families...who each had two kids younger than ours. We stayed across the street from the main gates at the Desert Inn and Suites. We paid I think $85/night, for a one bedroom suite. They had a continental breakfast, microwave and fridge in the room too. They also had a simple pool and hot tub. We watched fireworks from the roof one night.
We rented a car for 10 days. We started off in San Diego for one night, then the rest of the trip in Anaheim. I have an old family friend who lives down there, so he came and took us out a couple times to see other things. I think the car cost ~$500? We brought our own carseats.
At the time, it was cheaper to get our 5 day hopper passes through the AMA.
One person from each of the three families went and bought groceries in one vehicle, the first night we got there. There is a Walmart and a grocery store closeby.
We ate at the Rainforest Cafe a couple times, you can print off coupons for kids' meals to be 99 cents if you purchase an adult entree. Kids were also eating free at Denny's right next to our hotel.
We also brought two umbrella strollers for that trip. It was great for when Caleb and I split up to do rides with each kid. Way easier to maneuver Friday night crowds with two little strollers. One set of friends brought their sit and stand, and it seemed quite cumbersome at times!
There's pics on my FB if you want to check out what it was like

We were going to build one this year, then got lazy

However, several of DD's hockey teammates have parents who did rinks in their backyards. One dad said that his trick was to hook up his hot water tank to the outside hose for flooding the rink. He says it helps with getting really smooth ice.
We looked up kits from Costco, which seemed to be a reasonably price. But I think buying the plastic/tarp and wood yourself would also be quite economical depending on the size of rink you're building.

DH and I stayed at the Barcelo Colonial two years ago. The beach there was awesome. DH saw sea turtles and tonnes of fish/rays while snorkelling at our beach. We really enjoyed the food, it was all-inclusive. It was a little rocky in some areas right in the water, but you just had to look where you were going/stepping.
I stayed at the Grand Coco Bay (in Playa Del Carmen) this past May with my girlfriend. It was ok...lots of boats right off the beach, so we couldn't really have too much fun in the water. The food was so-so, you had to buy your own water past the first couple free bottles in the room. It was a small all-inclusive resort.

My DS went through a phase like that. And we had 2 cats (one passed away when he was 2) and we have a dog (got her as a puppy 2.5 yrs ago). It lasted quite some time. It took him a while to get over it too. He's finally at the stage where he'll voluntarily cuddle the dog, but never for long periods of time. He just kind of ignores the animals

In the last 6 months, he has taken the responsibility of feeding the pets and that seemed to strengthen his bond with them, and the pets now trust him. He used to freak them out when he'd yell and push them away.
Some of my kids' friends are scared of our dog...and one boy is terrified of our cat. After many many visits, most of the kids warm up to our animals when they see how playful they are with DD. Some people just aren't pet folks!

That little patient of mine, had a homemade lead blanket. His mom said it was really expensive to get one ordered/made, so she just improvised. Would he or does he have a very heavy jacket/vest that he likes to wear to calm him down?
I don't have much experience in this. But once, years ago, I started seeing a patient at my dental office who had quite the sensory issues. He came every 6 months starting when he was very little, and for some reason, he really warmed up to only me...not even my boss (the dentist).
I found out at his first visit that he really liked the lead blanket that we use for x-rays. So whenever he came in, I'd let him wear it. And only when he had that on, would he let me brush his teeth with a toothbrush and regular toothpaste. It took him a very long time to tolerate the rubber cup polisher.
You can try just giving him a flosser to chew on. I really like the Reach flossers with the disposable heads, for kids.
Do you think he'd be willing to try a toothbrush, if you promise to use the cloth right after? Or maybe dipping the cloth in a tolerable kids' mouthwash (there's the blue stuff for kids by Oral B). Or trying a water pik?
ETA: could it be that he doesn't like how soft the toothbrush is? Perhaps a harder/stiffer brush might work?

Boo to cancer!
Caleb was stage 4B at diagnosis 5 years ago, but for Hodgkins. 3 years ago, his doctor and nurse told us to get our affairs in order as they didn't know how much longer he'd live. Well...he's still here. I don't know whether it's luck, or the things we tried. Caleb had a traditional Chinese medicine doctor come to our house monthly. He took herbs and acupuncture. We started eating more healthy (read the Eating For Cancer book), started ordering our groceries from the organic delivery service. His mom had taken up healing touch when we had Evie. She still comes every so often to do healing touch for both of us.
Loads of positive healing thoughts going to your friend. And you are a very good friend

Did he have the hot chemo bath by chance?
Sorry to hear your DH's friend is not doing well

I'm in Calgary, let me know if there's anything we can do to help either your friend or your DH. This must be so stressful for his family.
Like PP's said, Motel Village is super close to the hospital. If your DH is there for 2hrs or less for visits, there is free parking up on the hill on the east side of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre/Foothills Hospital. We often park there for quick appointments. But if your DH won't have a car, he could walk from motel village to the hospital (probably 15-20 min walk?)...I've never done it, but I'm trying to see in my head if there are sidewalks between those two places and I can not remember for the life of me. You'd think I'd know after going there regularly for 5 years

I am patiently waiting for DH to take our Rondo to get the winter tires put on them

So for the last few days, I've been driving our F150. The truck has mud/snow/ice tires, they are great in the winter. DH hunts, so he needs a vehicle that he can hopefully rely on to get him out of the woods if the weather gets bad.
We also live on a pretty big hill, so winter tires are pretty much a must as we often see people stuck in our community on the hills or city buses sliding backwards down them!
I think of myself as a pretty safe driver, but I worry about those who aren't in winter conditions. I feel like I have more control of my vehicles if I have the appropriate tires on them. I was driving 40km/hr in our truck going down a hill to work last year (in the snow/ice), in a 70km/hr zone. A lady driving a little 4-door Honda was driving a little faster than I (she was in the left lane) and passed me. Then she went to touch her brakes, and she whipped around to do a 180...facing my truck coming down a hill. I was lucky...and so was she, that I had good traction and was going slow that I didn't hit her. It was a pretty panicky moment judging by the look on her face as she saw me coming at her!

We used these folks a month and a half ago:
http://www.crosstowndoors.com/ They came recommended by a friend. It was awesome service. We had a broken spring and a very frayed looking cable on one side. The price was decent and the guy who came to do the work was very professional. I called them in the morning when they opened, they told me somebody would be by between 11-12, but would call when they were on their way. They ended up calling to ask if they could come a half hour early as they were ahead of schedule and it worked out well for my schedule.

Feeling devastated over DS Teeth

I just want to make sure I have this straight...the first DDS didn't take x-rays, but the 2nd one did...correct?
It's amazing what you can see with x-rays. We have patients who refuse x-rays, which makes it hard to diagnose certain cavities (like the ones between the teeth). I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the pedo DDS found that many cavities after having films done. Without seeing the x-rays for myself, I don't really know what the severity of the dark spots are on the film. Did they point them out to you on the x-rays?
I recently saw a little 5 year old boy who had several baby molars that had silver crowns. He's also coming in for his 2nd root canal in a couple weeks, and will be fitted for yet another silver crown.
Don't beat yourself up about what is already done. I have a feeling that genetics/acidity of his saliva may play a big part in it, and diet-wise only a little. Have you started using fluoridated toothpaste? By being more diligent starting now with oral hygiene, you 'might' be able to save his adult teeth from being the same way. My DH had plenty of cavities as a child, but as an adult, he has one little wee filling. I've just always had cavities no matter what I did, my mom is much the same way.
You can try to neutralize the acidity in his mouth after eating certain foods. Say if he's having fruit, follow it up with a bit of cheese as that neutralizes acids in the mouth.
Like billsbride said, root canals on baby teeth are waaaay less intensive than ones on adult teeth. He'll be keeping some of those baby molars for several more years. So if it's recommended to be done, definitely get them done. As for the top teeth...at age 5, it wouldn't be a huge deal to just have them pulled even if the roots haven't resorbed. There are 4 year olds who start naturally shedding those teeth, so people may not think much of it when they see him with a few front teeth missing. At his age, he'll recover so quickly from having those extractions done. So you can take a little time to decide esthetically what you would prefer for him. And sealants will probably get recommended as the adult molars/bicuspids come in as he gets older.
If you can get your DDS to order you some MI Paste, it seems to work quite well with sticky pits that haven't yet formed into actual cavities. It's easy to use (like toothpaste, or you can just rub some in the sticky spots, like how Manda does with the fluoride).

Depends on your child!
I've seen them all at the regular dental office I work at. Today, I had an awesome 3 year old come for her first visit and she did really well with her first cleaning. I've also taken x-rays on even younger kids (usually after an accident where they bump a tooth or something like that) while they sit on a parent's lap.
And then there was the 3 year old I had about a month ago. She screamed and cried, even before I took her back to the dental chair. The appointment was a no-go, and the parents will try again in 6 months and see what happens.
We've done fillings on toddlers, and referred others to the peds (usually the one at the Northland Prof building, since we're a NW clinic). So it definitely depends on the child.
Both my kids love going to the dentist...but they also have spent a lot of time at my office playing and goofing around. They're really familiar with it.

DH's parents are like you and your ex. They go have coffee together, they bought a place together as an investment a couple years ago, they have both come on holidays with us and the kids. They are both in other relationships now, but still hang out, with or without their kids/grandkids.
DH used to think that this was weird, since his parents weren't actually together. But he says that it has made things so much easier for him and his two younger siblings. They knew their parents could be best friends, but their relationship worked better not being married to one another.
There were times where my SIL (who is 8 yrs younger than DH), felt kind of left out. She was 7 when it all happened. The older boys are 18mos apart, quite a bit older than her and both went to go live with FIL as teenagers, while she stayed living with MIL (in the same city).
My IL's also divorced when their kids were a bit older than yours though. So they all remember the fighting and arguing. They were relieved to see their parents separated and happier. I think it's normal for the kids to sometimes wonder what it'd be like for their parents to get back together, especially when they get along so well. My guess is that eventually you'll get asked that question.
