A lot of your post resonated with me because I have a HORRIBLE teether. My point of view is that you do what you have to do to get through it. For some things, like LOOOOOOOOONG bouts of teething, it's just not always possible to stick to your guns and maintain your sanity at the same time. I don't think you're creating bad habits. I think you're doing your best to get through it.
We noticed our son's first tooth right on his 4-month birthday, so it had to have been there for a while and we just didn't notice. In my husband's family, all the kids got teeth early, and then they'd recede below the gums again. My son is unfortunately taking after my husband's side of the family. He got 8 teeth between the ages of 4-7 months of age. ALL of those teeth went back below the gums, and it was hell when they began to come back up at 9 months of age. It REALLY bothered him the second time around, and now teething is an on-going hell for us.
My son also won't eat much of anything while teething. He absolutely won't eat fruits or vegetables (I feel your pain on that one!), but sometimes we can get soft meat or pasta/bread into him. He mainly lives off of milk until the tooth comes through, and he is a SLOW teether. It takes about a month for the tooth to come out. Needless to say, he has lost a lot of weight. I've been so concerned, and he's been evaluated by his pediatric team (he's a preemie, so he gets a lot of pediatric visits), but they all say it's normal for a child who is sensitive to teething.
We also tried co-sleeping, and like you, we couldn't handle it anymore since our son kicks us in the head, scratches my boob, pulls our hair, etc. We also don't do CIO. We've found putting a projector in his crib was really helpful. The images on the ceiling calm him down a lot.
We've tried every medicine and homeopathic remedy out there. The only things that "kind of" work are Advil and Tylenol.
What we've found that works best for us is a LOOOOONG stroller ride outside, then a bath, bottle, and bedtime. The fresh air is the kicker. He napped so well today after his stroller ride that we forgot he was getting his molars! We're heading off for another stroller ride now. Oy!
I wish you all the best. I know how hard this is. I HATE teething and all the stress it causes. I think you're doing a good job, though. Keep up with the peanut butter toast if that's what he will eat while teething!

For those that did bottle-feeding, when did you drop the bottle entirely?
My hairdresser told me that her son was off the bottle and only taking milk out of a sippy cup at 11 months of age! I thought that was a little young. Or am I behind here? I know a lot of kids still take a bedtime bottle after they are off the bottle during the day.
My son will be a year old this weekend, and he won't take more than a few sips of milk out of a sippy cup. He can drink out of a sippy cup quite well, and he'll gulp water like crazy. But if I put milk in the cup, he only takes a few sips and really nurses it. I've tried it with homo milk, formula, half and half, heated up, cold out of the fridge, room temp, with a meal, first thing in the morning, etc.
What's the age range for this? Is it just too soon for him?
Thanks!

On average, it's about $800/month (not including formula) for just DH and I. I don't include our son in that since he barely eats anything. Sometimes it's more than that.
I enjoy gourmet cooking, and I follow a lot of cooking blogs. I know we could cut our bill down if I didn't cook with exotic ingredients or use expensive cuts of meat, but it's sort of a pleasure for DH and I that we don't want to to cut back on unless there is a time that comes when we can't afford it. We VERY rarely eat at a restaurant (perhaps once every 5 months), and I prefer to make my homemade pizza than to order take-out.
We went through a tough time after our wedding. I was laid off, and all we could afford was $250/month on groceries. I've never eaten so much pasta and Ragu sauce in my life

Since then we REALLY appreciate nice meals!
We will be switching DS to organic whole milk soon, so we won't be saving a ton of money versus formula. I also try to buy organic fruits and vegetables when I think it will really make a difference (soft skin versus hard shell, etc.).

My baby is also on Enfamil A+. He will sometimes have one massive poop a day or sometimes 2-3 poops a day. He's been on it since birth. I think your baby's poops sound normal to me!
I would only switch formulas if the baby is refusing to drink much of this kind, is super cranky and having a hard time sleeping, or if the belly looks bloated from gas. It will take about one week for a baby to get accustomed to a formula each time you switch, and it can be hard on them. We tried switching our son to a different formula a few times, and we've had disastrous results with lots of crying and gas.

Count me in for this GTG!

We're in Leduc, and I wouldn't have it any other way! We moved exactly one year ago, and I am so relieved to be away from the rat race of Edmonton.
When I came to meet up with you guys at that Sherwood Park playdate, it took about 25 minutes (but that was in the pouring rain with a screaming baby in the back).
We're in one of the new areas on the west end that was mentioned, and sometimes I forget that I'm not in Edmonton when I look out my front window. Leduc Common is a "mini South Edmonton Common" and is just a 2 minute drive from me. Even though I have a lot of conveniences around me, it's very quiet here. We know all of the neighbors and we've really noticed how much friendlier people are here than in a big city. I feel so safe raising my son here.
My husband says it takes him 10 minutes in the morning to drive to Ellerslie Road from Leduc. From there, it's another 7 minutes to Century Park where he gets on the LRT to go to work downtown. He is the only man on our entire block who works in Edmonton. Everyone else works in Nisku.
There is a STRONG sense of community out here. There were 3 free BBQ's this summer, a parade and a zillion activities on Canada Day, and there is a whole line-up of stuff planned for the Christmas season. Each season we get a community programs and activity guide. It outlines all of the upcoming events, as well as programs offered at the Leduc Rec Center (which is AWESOME and offers lots of great programs for kids).
The house we had built is steps from a brand new playground and right across the street from a huge pond with Canadian geese to entertain my son with every day. The lot alone would have cost us a ton if it were in Edmonton, but to have built a home on it too would have been a fantasy for us if we were still in the city. We looked around for a year before signing a purchase agreement, and we estimate that our lot and house would have cost about $135,000 more if it were in a similar new area in Edmonton.
I'm very happy we moved here. I would only move to an acreage if we were to ever move out of our home.

We store the batches in cheapie bottles from Wal-Mart. Then, when he's hungry, I take one of the cheapie bottles out and heat it up in the bottle warmer. Once warm, I transfer it to a Playtex bottle (I've found the liners can melt if I heat the bottle up directly in them).

I had an emergency c-section, and I will have a scheduled c-section for any future children we might have (for medical reasons).
My stomach is a mess. I have lost 36 lbs. since leaving the hospital (I only put on 8 lbs. during my pregnancy and I now weigh far less than before I was pregnant). I am working out and eating VERY well. I am losing weight every week and feeling better about everything EXCEPT my post c-section stomach.
I can't describe it to someone who hasn't had a c-section, but the apron is something you CAN'T get rid of in all women. It's somewhat debilitating to walk around with it and know that with every pound you lose, it won't fix your post-surgery belly. People question whether you're pregnant again, you can't wear the clothing you want to wear, and you carry yourself differently when you walk. It can take over your life.
We've already saved up for my tummy tuck, and I plan on getting it done after we finish having kids. I know it likely will be much worse than having a c-section, but I can't go on like this forever.
Good luck to you, OP. I wish you the best! I say to go for it if dieting and exercise don't help you.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby!

My BEST advice is to do as little as possible for the first 2-3 weeks. Do not clean your house, cook, go up and down stairs a lot. But do walk a tiny bit so you don't get a blood clot or deep vein thrombosis. I recovered VERY well from my c-section, and my recovery is directly linked to having people around me doing everything. It sucked. I made the mistake at 12 days post-partum in carrying a load of laundry up 2 flights of stairs. I was in awful pain that night. Lesson learned. Don't do anything for the first few weeks! Only carry your baby-that's it. Keep on top of your pain meds too!
For my next c-section, I plan on wearing a belly support/abdominal binder afterward. I used a pillow held against my belly every time I laughed or cried. It just helped to have support. I have already purchased one for next time. Get your doctor's ok before wearing one, though.
I had an emergency c-section a month before my due date. I was pumped full of fluids via IV as well, and it took a long time for the swelling to go away. However, I had pre-eclampsia, and that's why I had to deliver early. The pre-eclampsia caused the majority of my swelling post-partum, and by the 6-week mark, I had lost 30 lbs. of water retention. I could finally wear shoes again and get my rings on. My swelling situation wasn't normal, though!
I hate to mention this, but the belly over-hang (or apron, as c-section moms call it) doesn't always go away. I am now 5-months post-partum, and my gross belly hang is still there. I have tried everything. I now wear Reitmans comfort fit jeans (no zipper or buttons) and 'tuck' my flabby belly inside. Ewww. I have lost all my pregnancy weight, and I look the same I did before pregnancy...except that my stomach is hanging down. I've just accepted it.
Ok, I'll tell you my story about back pain after a c-section, but I don't want you to freak out. I'm just getting this out there in case someone else is reading this and going through the same thing. The pain you are experiencing in your back is exactly what I have. However, my pain set in about 3 months post-partum (not right away like yours). Mine is caused by the spinal block I had. It's so bad that I constantly visit the massage therapist and chiropractor for relief. I also can't sleep more than 3 hours at night without the back pain becoming soooo unbearable that I have to get up and walk it off. It's the most awful thing I've had to deal with. Nevermind the belly or the scar or anything else-the back pain is the worst for me. HOWEVER, I am sure this is rare and that your pain will go away soon!
As for pre-pregnancy shape, my uterus took about 9 weeks to go down! They say it should return to normal size by week 6, but even my doctor commented at my 6-week check-up that it still had not gone down. This can happen after a c-section. I was told that it can take up to 12 weeks for some women!
I felt pretty good by the 3-week mark! I felt like myself, but I still couldn't do much. By the 5-week mark, I still couldn't lift the carseat with my son in it. But my week 6, everything was great! I could lift the carseat, drive, and have sex

However, I will warn you, many women say that sex after a c-section is very painful the first few times. I was unfortunately one of those woman, but it does get better!
Good luck!

I think you're really sweet for even caring enough to wonder about this! Your friends are lucky to have you!
I would have really loved if people would have asked me if I even wanted visitors. Instead, my friends and family completely overwhelmed me by constantly texting to say, "Hey, I'm in the neighborhood. Mind if I stop by?" I didn't have any 'Mommy ball$' yet, so I just got overwhelmed and caved in. I wish people would have thought about me and how I might want time alone with my son and ASKED if I wanted company yet.
I also hated how my friends always implied that I was going to get postpartum depression just because they did. Definitely don't recommend a postpartum depression recovery book unless the mother has told you she has those depressed feelings!
Yup, the breastfeeding question is a no-no. I actually don't mind the c-section question (I had one), but that's just me.
If the woman had a c-section, DEFINITELY don't ask her if she is longing for a VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section). Some women (like me!) want no part of a vaginal birth if their first birth was a scary experience like mine was and would rather just have a scheduled c-section with their next child. However, many women are judged for wanting a scheduled c-section, so I'd just leave that alone too. My friends shoot daggers at me when I talk about scheduled c-sections

You could ask what part of being a new parent they are enjoying the most. That would be a really positive question to ask.
I was soooo happy when a friend called right after bringing my son home to see if I wanted her to drop off breakfast. YES! New parents are completely overwhelmed, and not having to worry about your next meal is very much appreciated!
It really boosted my spirits when people would tell me I looked great (as conceited as that sounds!). Most moms have been through the ringer with the delivery and recovery, and then add on tons of sleepless nights and you certainly don't feel good about yourself at all. Compliments do wonders for new moms!
The best thing is when people tell me it looks like I'm really doing a great job as a new mom. That's probably the best thing you can say at a moment when you might not know what to say to a new mom!
-

I couldn't breastfeed completely. I was on a lot of medication due to complications after the delivery, and it affected my milk supply so I supplemented with formula after each feed. Eventually I just switched over to formula, and it was the best decision ever. No more feeling bad that my health problems prevented me from completely BF'ing. HOWEVER, strangers on the street didn't let me get away with not feeling bad! I was and still am CONSTANTLY asked this question, and you're right OP, as a formula-feeding mom you do feel like you need to explain the entire story and justify your personal choice.
This question is right up there with, "How much money do you make?" in terms of its inappropriateness.

I'm really puzzled by your doctor! I would personally never listen to that advice. We are formula feeders over here, and my son takes 5 or 6 six-ounce bottles a day. After he takes a full bottle, I wait 45 minutes and give him some avocado. We just started solids 2 days ago, and it's going well like this.
I've read a mountain of books and information, and it is always suggested that formula or breastmilk be the main source of nutrition until the age of 1 (unless you are given a very compelling reason by your doctor to not follow this). Everything I've read says that a bottle is given first, and then food is given. This is the old 'Food for fun while under the age of 1' rule.

Rolling over disrupting sleep? Help!

My son has just discovered how to roll over from back to tummy. He has been able to roll from tummy to back for quite a while, but we knew he'd soon figure out how to go the other way too.
We used to be able to put him in his crib and have him fall asleep with no issues. He prefers to sleep on his back (which is great for this SIDS-paranoid mom). However, now that he can roll over both ways, all he wants to do is practice rolling over! He actually rolls IN HIS SLEEP! Once the movement startles him and wakes him up, he lets out this piercing scream as if he's been hurt (but he hasn't, he is just startled). Then he cries until I come and flip him back over. Although he can roll back over, he doesn't. He just waits for me to come rescue him. I've tried leaving him alone to see if he'd flip himself back onto his back, but he cried for 30 minutes and I just couldn't take it any longer.
This has continued for the past two nights. I should add that he began teething more than a month ago, and it hasn't stopped. The teething pain was keeping him up and preventing us from sleep training him, but now it looks like the teething keeping him up at night is being replaced with the rolling over keeping him up at night!
Did anyone else have to deal with this? I've read that it's common, but how long will this last for? When will he just say to himself, "Ok, I can roll over. Big deal. I'm sleeping now."
I am beyond EXHAUSTED! Any words of wisdom are welcome!

I'm sorry your cycles are irregular now. However, I have quite a few friends who told me that it took a long time for their cycles to return to normal after having a child.
My periods are actually better than they were before having my son. I no longer have horrible cramps and PMS. They're only 7 days long, whereas they used to be 12-14 days long. I was getting irregular for about 8 months before we began TTC. Now my cycles are super regular. For me, pregnancy seemed to 'fix' my issues.

My son was born at 36 weeks and 1 day. He weighed 6 lbs. exactly.
It was an emergency, so all we had on hand were newborn clothes, since we had expected to have a full-term baby.
We had to run out and buy some really tiny outfits. At 6 lbs., a baby will swim in most newborn outfits. As you likely already know, different brands fit differently, but there were very few outfits that he could fit in that read 'newborn' on the tag. I really recommend getting some preemie clothes if you will give birth closer to the 36 week mark. Just get a small going-home outfit and a bunch of tiny sleepers. After the first month, the baby should be able to wear newborn-sized outfits.
For diapers, the newborn Huggies and Pampers were just too big for the first month. We had to go to Babies R' Us to buy some premature-sized Pampers. That was the only place we could find them in our city.

If I'm being brutally honest with myself and putting my pride aside, I will admit that I'm not as intelligent as you are, Sidney. So that's why I could never be a doctor!
However, I will shoot for the second-best goal that I have career-wise. Once I'm done with raising my children and being a stay-at-home mom, I will attempt to go back to school for a career in the medical field. I say "attempt" because I'm not sure if I'd even get accepted, but I know I'd regret it for the rest of my life if I didn't try. DH supports me 100% and he said we will somehow find the money if I do get accepted and start a new career one day.
