I didn't plan a home birth, though I was in the care of a midwife. I had always planned to deliver with few interventions if possible but I was anticipating going to the hospital. Once I was in labour though, the only way I could cope with contractions was to walk through them. I couldn't sit or lay down so the thought of getting in my car and driving to the hospital was scarier to me than the thought of delivering at home - so we had a last-minute change of plans. And it wound up being the best decision I could have made (for me), even though everything didn't go super-smoothly.
Anyway, like others have said, you can't possibly know in advance how you'll tolerate pain. All I can really say is that when you're in the middle of it, you just take it one contraction at a time - and you just do it for as long as you can. You might just surprise yourself! And there's no shame in transferring to a hospital if you feel like you need to!

If you search on etsy for 'hockey party' you'll find some fun ideas, granted most of it is more appropriate for older kids and adults so you have to filter through it a bit. What stuck out for me were decorative banners, scribbler crayons (hockey theme) and favour tags, cupcake toppers, chocolate hockey sticks/pucks.

I very rarely wear anything on my actual skin beyond moisturizer, but when I do, it's a MAC concealer (like your make-up, it's older than dirt but it still works!) and a MAC pressed powder of some description. I don't know anything about foundation, etc., so that's as good as my description gets

.
My daily make-up includes creaseless cream eyeshadow by Benefit, gel eye liner from pur minerals (requires a brush to apply) (both are available at SDM) and whatever mascara I find on sale. I've never been able to tell the difference between them (regardless of price), and I have super-short eyelashes to begin with so there's not much I can do to enhance them. Right now I'm using one I got in the USA, physician's formula organic something or other.
For my lips, I have a bunch of random lipsticks but it really looks like I'm wearing a lot of make-up when I wear it so I save it only for special occasions. Daily, I use colourless burt's bees lip balm (mint) and I buy them in bulk on ebay since they're WAY WAY WAY cheaper than way.
Here are links to what I use:

I attended my BSc convocation (drove from Ottawa to Hamilton for it), mostly because it was a huge deal to my mother. I skipped my MSc convocation and never really had any intention of attending it, mostly because I was moving on to yet another degree so it didn't seem like that big of a deal. As for my PhD convocation, you're darn-right I'm going!

My research institute's 'party' is brutal. We go bowling and they splurge for pizza for everyone (but we still pay $5 each). The only good part about it is that we get a half day off work.
DH works for his family's business so it's also not really a traditional party; they all just get together and have a bunch of drinks and food someday after work.

I actually did this
last Thursday, but only got around to uploading the photos last night.
I should add that while this isn't my 'every' day, it's certainly not even close to abnormal for me either.
At the restaurant I had dinner at, I ran into Jean Chretien (like, really almost ran him over) but couldn't bring myself to ask to take his photo

. That would have made my slideshow a bit more interesting!
Anyway, enjoy my boring day!

As the title says, the aesthetician who does my Brazilians for me retired recently, unbeknownst to me

(I loved her!). Can anyone offer a recommendation? I live in the west end so that would be preferable (as I won't be working in the upcoming year), but I've been going downtown forever so it wouldn't be a big deal to continue it.
TIA!

It's definitely a small space but not actually as small as I'd expected. And I got used to the noise and almost fell asleep out of boredom as my scan was long (brain and spinal cord). If noise and small spaces aren't major issues for you, it'll be totally fine. And if they are, then talk to your doctor about taking something for your anxiety. Best of luck!

DH and I know someone (he went to school with her and I worked with her later on) who was admitted to the hospital for an appendectomy and just before surgery they realized she was, in fact, in labour. Apparently it happens 'like clockwork' in my hometown. I personally can't imagine how it could happen (given my experience) but it seems more common than we realize.

People are ridiculous! I wouldn't even respond to the email!
I sold a bridesmaid gown last summer, and was even nice enough to deliver it. I'd had it dry-cleaned and it was still in the plastic. When I got there I offered to let her open it up to make sure she was happy with it. She declined and said it was fine and that she'd be wearing it that night.
A full week later I received an email from her saying it had a stain on it (I was pretty sure there were no marks on it) and that she wanted her money back. I think the stain came from the fact that she WORE the d*mn thing! Anyway, I ignored her completely. It wasn't like I didn't give her the opportunity to inspect it first.

What I remember the most was that my father was the only one allowed to have a career (my parents still largely live in the 1950s); it was automatically assumed that it was my mothers job to raise us. She was like a single parent she made sure she was around whenever we werent in school but she always also had a job. She was expected to sacrifice any work-related dreams for his career and she did. On the one hand, Im disappointed that she gave in, and I wish she had become a teacher like she always wanted to be, but she sacrificed a career to be home for my sister and I, (knowing that she couldnt rely on my father to help parent us) and I find that incredibly admirable, though I dont think I would make the same decision necessarily. My mom was always around, but not overbearing; all in all Id say our time with her was really balanced. She worked when we were in school, but was otherwise home with us. Somehow she always managed to have a job where she never had to work on a holiday or in the summer when we were out of school. Imagine that today (teachers excluded)?!?
My father was a workaholic and had nothing to do with raising us. Ive always been very aware of how little my dad cared about the day-to-day goings on of his kids. It used to bother me a lot that he never showed a bit of interest in anything pertaining to us (hes still like this), though I see where it all comes from now (we wont go there). It did, however, have a huge impact on me growing up. He totally used his work to avoid my sister and I (I firmly believe things would have been different had we been boys). So even though my fathers job kept him busy when we were little, the job itself was just a smoke screen for other issues. But when youre a kid you cant see that and I always thought he cared more about work than me.
I find this topic rather interesting; what really *is* and how children perceive things to be can be very different things.
I should add though, that even though DH and I would never emulate our parents' choices (particularly my parents) with respect to work and raising children, I do understand why things were the way they were, and my mom did the absolute best she could in her circumstances. Difficult as it was, it worked for them.

I could have written your post up until about December of last year. I don't really know what changed; I just realized that at some point we knew we were going to take the plunge and 'now' seemed as good a time as any. It's hard to describe. I still have many fears and worries but I think I've accepted the ways in which our lives are going to change. Whenever I'm thinking apprehensively I try to remember how many great things will come from this decision, and try not to focus on the things I fear I'm going to miss.

It was perfect for us. But I'm sure that if he'd proposed on a jumbo screen at a hockey game (for example) I would have loved it just as much. I'm not uncomfortable being in the limelight necessarily, but I do personally feel that a proposal should be a private moment shared between the people involved.
