This happened 2 days ago? So you are not in horror, as you said. You are bragging that your child, who could have been killed falling down the hardwood stairs onto a hardwood floor, managed to do it without you hearing him (which to me means that if you couldn't hear him you were too far away to begin with)? You're bragging that you left your 10-month old unattended long enough to 'accomplish' this in the first place? Two days have passed, and you still think this is what, an anecdotal story? That is how you seem to be treating it and I find that pretty irresponsible, sorry. This should have been a "phew, lesson-learned" post, not an "extremely impressed" post. Just sayin'.
Maybe I'm reading your post in the wrong tone.. yes, let's go with that...

"the co-authors signed a letter retracting an interpretation of the paper that it proved that vaccines caused autism, which the paper never actually claimed in the first place"
So this means that the paper NEVER said that the MMR vaccine (or any vaccine for that matter) causes autism? But that an interpretation of the original paper authored by others made that claim?

Rest assured that the right pair of glasses will make your little dude's eye pop even more. Those little girls at play group will be swooning more than they already do. Glasses, and being able to see, will make him sooooo happy (once he gets used to them).
Is there any chance that the eyes could partially correct with the use of the glasses?

I was just about to cave and order the same one that Jennhi found when IVANNA came to our rescue with a similar lovey. It's a bunny, but other than colour, they are eerily similar. DD took to it immediatly, sitting on the kitchen floor, sucking the paw of the lovey, along with her thumb, and rubbing the rest of it on her cheek. She even started to drift off a bit, while sitting up! Goofy girl.

Thank you again Ivanna!!!!! You are our hero!!!!I know better. I really do. Or at least I should have. I shamfeully admit that I have committed the greatest lovey blunder of all time -- only having 1!
Much to my dismay DD has taken to a lovey that I can't find a duplicate of. I've been trying for months to sway her over to a bunny head-blanket (which I have two of) but it's just not working. I only gave her this lovey in the first place because it seemed the least likely to smother her when she was really wee. DS never attached to anything so I didn't think twice about it with DD.
However, it now seems that she has entered a monogamous relationship with the pink & black polka dotted poodle lovey. She basically spazzes out until she has it in her hand, then will happily roll over, lovey in hand, thumb in mouth and go sleep.

I need another one! And of course I can't find it. It was a gift which came attached to a sleeper by First Impressions, pictured below. I think it's carried by HBC (Bay/Zellers) as I've seen similar ones for boys there, but not this one.

So I'm asking that
please, pretty please, if you have this jammie set and don't use the lovey (anymore) can DD PLEASE have it? I'll pay for postage of course.
I would just buy a new jammie set if I could find it (ideally in her size, 12-18) but I've only found one on eBay in 0-3 and the seller only ships within the USA.
Please help!

I had the old model as well, which Summer agreed to replace with the new model when I needed the extra camera. I agree, I don't like the new model at all, except for the scan feature, but I digress.
I had to contact them again recently when the monitor unit stopped working. It wouldn't turn on at all. They replaced the whole unit with no issue. So try calling them. They're email customer service is super slow and sometimes you sit on hold for a long time, but once you get someone they're usually pretty good.

^ uh ya, MH, thanks for posting something unhelpful as usual. I think we're all aware where milk comes from. Duh.
We started the transition to homo milk with both kids at 9 months, as per our doctor's advice. DS was a poor eater so he continued to get some formula for quite a while longer. DD eats really well so our doc said she can stop formula whenever we want, so we'll gradually decrease it over the next few months.

I'm a hard [censored]. I'd say cut the nursing-to-sleep habit. Nurse before sleep, but not TO sleep. Do it in his room, not elsewhere. I know the chair you have in there isn't ideal, but this isn't meant to be a full feed anyway, just a couple minutes. Transfer him awake to the crib, and leave. Then Sleep-easy his butt, LOL! It'll be a terible few days, but he'll get it. After a while you can stop nursing at all before nap, which will be helpful for daycare.
I did the same with KC. Worked great for her. Now she just goes into the crib wide awake and farts around until she's ready to sleep, rarely if ever any crying.
He's just gotten used to being coddled because he was so sick, and now he knows that if he screams you'll cave. KC had me wrapped for a while too, because it was easier to cave and get her to sleep whichever way worked than to fight her on it. Although she was worst overnight, not for naps.
Adn I think stickign to 2-3-4 is good. If his first nap fails, try again for nap #2. Sometimes he may need a 3rd power nap too if he's not co-operating for the first 2. At least, this is what I find with KC.

My mother got pregnant twice while breastfeeding, and did not have a period for 3.5-4 years straight.
So yes, you can ovulate while BFing. But no one can answer that question for YOU because every single woman is different. Some women EBF and get a period back within 2 months of delivery. Others are 7-8 months, others are over a year. OPKs can be wrong/used wrong so your money is better spent on condoms.
On another note, your EBF at 8 months? As in, no formula/no pumping, or as in Matthew gets no other food except breastmilk?

With DS I'd read a lot of sleep books. Sleepeasy, the No-Cry Sleep Solution, Baby Whisperer, Healthy Sleep Habits-Happy Child (Weissbluth), and there was another one which I forget now. I also watched the Sleepeasy DVD before reading the book. Sooooo much faster!
In the end we did a modified Sleepeasy. The check-ins were a bit shorter at first than the 5-10-15 minutes SE rule. After a few days the check-ins were longer because they just pissed DS off. We also used the pick-up/put-down technique from Baby Whisperer (I think?) when he was hysterical. The key is consistency with whichever route you choose. I had strict rules even for PU/PD... PU - one verse of his sleepy-time song - PD - "Good night C, I love you" and close door, wait until next check-in time.
Keeping consistent with the 'rules' is what makes ANY sleep training method effective. What those rules are should be up to you, as you know your baby best, and no single sleep training method can accommodate your child's specific needs out-of-the-box (IMO). By reading several "ideas" I was able to figure out what would work for my son and implement it, using a mostly SE with a little BW and a little Weissbluth.

^ same here. 9 months with DS and DD had her first homo milk 1 day before 9 months. I just introduced it slowly. DD gets it in a sippy with meals, not as a replacement for formula or BM yet. We'll work it into her diet gradually. It'll be nice not to have to pay for formula soon though! But she's a great eater, so she gets her nutrition from food sources. DS was a terrible eater so he stayed on formula longer with part-time milk.
With DD I don't warm the milk. With DS I warmed it at bedtime only, to make him drowsy.

Anyone have any thoughts as to why my daughter's stork bite birth mark is peeling like a bad sunburn?
She has eczema on other areas of her body, but
nothing like this. The peeling skin is thick, not flaky. The rest of her eczema is dry and rough, but not peeling by any means. I've been using a prescription for eczema on it but it's not particularly helpful.
Hopefully you can kinda see what I'm talking about in the pictures:

My son's story is similar. Lack of speech at 18 months (words). Referral to a Developmental Pediatrician at 19 months, as well as getting on the waiting list for a speech assessment at the same time. He was 23 months when he finally saw the DP, 24 months when he had his speech assessment and OT assessment. Started preschool at 24.5 months, had his hearing tested around the same time (passed) and finally started private speech therapy at 27 months. It was 3 sessions 2 weeks apart which ended mid-December and now we're waiting for the post-assessment appointment to be assigned. We had the DP follow-up on Monday and she went from thinking he had speech dysplaxia in July to suggesting the he has an ASD now. So now we're in the thick of more assessments, on the waiting list for classroom support and trying to sort out whatever else we can on our own while we wait. The process is SLOW. I can't believe I haven't even been assigned a post-speech therapy assessment appointment yet!
His DP thinks he has several autistic tendencies, including his lack of speech. He also lacks in eye contact, has a highly repetitive and obsessive nature (mostly with alphabet and numbers), and often doesn't respond to his name being called or acknowledge anyone else's presence. She also thinks the way he pushes out his lower jaw could be an autistic 'comfort tick', since he seems to do it when he's nervous. Oh, and his eating sucks! Which she thinks could be a sensory issue.
He's had a bit of a word explosion the past few days, but he still doesn't use words conversationally. Or if he wants juice, he doesn't say juice, he just holds the fridge door handle and bounces until he's prompted to use the word. Most of his communication is caveman-like, Even though he sings country songs all.day.long, he generally won't use words without a prompt.
He does well at transitions though, and is very affectionate. He follows direction very well, when he's listening, but he's very systematic about stuff. Certainly likes to line up his toys, over and over again. But when we woke up from his nap to find a baby sister in the house, it was no biggie to him. Kisses and hugs for the baby and on he went with his day. Move from crib to double bed... No problem. Switch car seat positions to make room for infant seat -- no problem. Tantrums -- not often. Potty training well - slowly, but well I think.
Basically for every Austic stereotype, he has one and not another. We still find it hard to believe the working DX but I guess that's normal with only a few days to digest the news.
So anyway, we're in a holding pattern while we sit on waiting lists for assessments, therapies, consults etc.

Thanks gals. I'm going to try to get a hold of these titles.
Honestly, I don't even know what I'm looking for. I just want to have a leg up.
Here's the situation... DS was referred to a developmental paediatrician (DP) at 19 months for lack of speech (0 words). We finally saw the DP when he was 23 months, at which point he had 1 word. She wasn't too concerned, talked about speech dyspraxia as a possibility (which made total sense to me, still does) and made some recommendations including speech therapy (which he was already on the list for) and preschool (which he was already registered for). Clearly I like to be proactive.
He had his speech therapy consult at 24 months and started private sessions when he 27 months. Only 3 sessions, once every two weeks. We're now waiting to get his appointment time for his follow-up assessment.
In the meantime, we had the 6-month follow-up with the DP yesterday. Speech dyspraxia wasn't even mentioned by her this time. Now she thinks he's on the low-end of the autism spectrum. Not just because of his speech issues, but also because of his obsessive behaviour with the alphabet and numbers, his lack of eye contact when being spoken to, or when speaking, and his tendency to push out his lower jaw. It probably doesn't help that he was playing rockstar the whole appointment with the guitar on his t-shirt. She seemed to think that that was pretty abnormal behaviour too. I realize that she's the DP, but I also feel like she's off her rocker. How can she know this about him in only two 20-minute appointments 6 months apart?!
So now we're waiting for more assessments and we have to complete a behavioural survey. The DP wants him to have a helper at preschool so I had to call today for that. She said because the waiting lists for programs are so long (3-4 years in some cases) she really wants him to seek out help now. She said she'd rather be wrong in a year or two about his dx than wait-and-see and be right.
So here we are, in limbo, not understanding if our son has special needs or how to meet them if he does. We just want to continue to be proactive as much as we can.
Honestly, we weren't expecting this. We knew it was a possibility, but we really really thought the DP was going to confirm speech dyspraxia. He certainly does show autistic tendencies though. I guess we'd just figured most of that was normal 2-year-old stuff.

I'm pro-vax. Maybe not ALL vax, like flu shots, but the standard DTP, MMR etc. Heck ya!
Is your DD immunosuppressed (sp?) or something? Or is she just always sick with standard colds etc? My DD is always sick, because her germy big brother brings home viruses from preschool. She still has all her vax's up to date, even though we do a slightly delayed schedule.
I'd suggest you get on it right away. You likely can't get them all up to date in time for school, but a start will be good. I believe strongly in herd-immunity for the sake of those little kids who medically can't get vaxes. So unless your DD has a medical concern for not vaccinating, personally I'd rather a vax be going through her system than polio.

Talk to me. Tell me what you know.
I have not taken ANY maternity nor parental leave for either of our kids (the first being a moot point at this stage). I don't qualify for it being self-employed and not paying E.I.
Presumably DH does qualify for it, according to the Labour of Ministry. DD is now 8.5 months old. I know that he can take 37 weeks of leave as long as he starts it before DD is 1.
...parents must begin their parental leave no later than 52 weeks after:
- the date their baby is born
The parental leave does not have to be completed within this 52-week period. It just has to be started.* From
http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/es/pubs/guide/pregnancy.php *
I know he has to give 2 weeks notice before his leave starts, and I know he is presumed to be returning to work after 37 weeks, but written notice of his return date would likely be appreciated.
I know they have to give him his position back, or something comparable.
So assuming this goes through, he gives his 2 weeks notice etc... Then what happens? He waits for his ROE and takes that to HRDC to get his Parental Leave (EI) benefits issued?
There's a 2-week waiting period for EI right? So IF he gets his ROE in right away and everything is fine, when do you think he'd get his first EI payment?
If he happens to find a new job while he's off on Parental Leave, does he just notify EI that he's returning to work earlier than expected? (I know he has to give his current employer 4 weeks written notice of resignation).
DH has 5 weeks of combined vacation/personal days per year, but he doesn't seem overly concerned about losing that.
Am I missing anything vital here? Have a forgotten something? I never went on mat leave so I have no idea how it works except what I've heard from friends or here on WB, so please feel free to enlighten me.
