Congrats to the winners! This was such a fun month.
I finally made my wordcount goal after taking two days off. My total came to 120 050 words, though the validator at NaNo says just under 120 000.
I definitely don't think I'll try to adhere to such a lofty goal next year. I'm exhausted! With working and school and family (whatever those things are) I am ready to sleep until Christmas!
Take care, everyone! Maybe I'll come back to this post next year.

Hey ladies! Not many updates as we enter the last week. How's everyone doing?
I hit 100 000 this morning. I definitely won't be finishing the story before the month is over--my goal was 120 000 and I think there's about 50 000 words left in the story. I'm so in love with the fic, though!
Anyway, hope everyone's still plugging away.

Kathleen, you amaze me with how many words you can churn out! I struggle to get even a few hundred in a day.
I amaze myself, honestly. I never knew how fast I could write until I just sat down and forced it. I can write about 2200-2700 words an hour, depending on how well-planned the chapter is. I think a lot of it comes from 1. having the story percolate inside my head for AGES, and 2. having a really detailed outline.
Well, I hit 50 000 words today. Actually, 51 334. I'm ahead of schedule for words but behind schedule on my outline. I'm not even halfway to my goal, but it's definitely turning into quite a story. *is proud mama*
I'll still continue to check in with you amazing ladies, as long as I'm not annoying people with my mad typing skillz. LOL

Kathleen and others - I have writers block something epic right now!
I hope it's passed, but if not, you could always write a short interlude, a piece of a later chapter or something that happened before the setting of the story. That's what I started yesterday--the meet of two characters that occurred long before the opening of the fic. It helps!
It hit 30 000 words today. *eyes wide* I think I'm on schedule for 120 000 words. I'm almost on track with my outline, so that's good.
Time to play some guitar hero with the old man!

You're too sweet. Thanks!
I'm at 23 752 this evening. That puts me at just under 20% of my goal. The story's going great, though I have to force myself to move on from scene to scene because the fic wants to be so much longer.
How's everyone else doing this happy Wednesday?

This seems like a good post to return to! Haven't been on WB in ages, but I'm definitely writing for Nano and I absolutely adored the support I got last year!
I have my outline and character studies ready! I'm really excited about this novel. The only thing is, my outline claims the fic wants to be about 120 000k words. So... we'll see about that.

I'm probably average. I haven't driven that much and don't own a car, but I drive my parent's cars all the time. I'm pretty timid and prefer highway driving to town driving (I've never driven in the city).
I was really, really bad at parking though. I've scraped two cars when trying to park. I was so used to driving DH's car, when I drove my mom's minivan I didn't give myself enough room and scraped and dented her van. Another time I backed into a truck that was over the middle line and totaled my mom's backhatch. Those were about four years ago and I've had no problems since.

How is everyone else doing? I would like to hear from some of the undergrads/non-grad students too if any of you would like to chime in (come on Kathleen...we haven't heard from you in awhile!).
Just happened to search my username like a total loser and saw this!
Well, I'm not at the end of the term because my school is still on strike! One month and counting.
I've completely lost all my ambition and I am feeling so. friggin. lost. I don't know what to do with myself! I have been reading non-scholastic stuff and baking a lot. I can't get motivated to read literature and haven't even gotten caught up on any assignments or anything.
All my friends are having a blast with the break, but I can only think of everything that's going wrong.
My grad school references can't work on my recommendations because of the strike (though some are, one isn't). I won't be graduating on time now so I won't have my final grades until much later than everyone else. York says they will be contacting our grad schools and everything, but I have the feeling we will get totally shafted because we don't have the grades and our applications will be late. I've been holding off on applying because I'm almost tempted to just say forget it and take a year off. I did apply to U of T though, thankfully I had almost everything ready for them and they are just waiting for one reference.
Also, I can't apply for the Explore program because I don't know when or if I'll have a summer.
So that's my tale of woe. There are many more details but basically, I might be totally WBfucked. I wish I could be like my friends and not worry, but most of them are just graduating into the wordforce or doing a victory lap. They have nothing to worry about!
To make everything worse, OSAP has messed up my application so royally, I have had to send them four (after today, five) packages of additional information because of my marriage. So I owe York my tuition and DH and I count on that extra money for Xmas, and I won't get it until at least the new year, probably. Unbelievable. AND because NSLSC thinks I'm no longer getting OSAP, they've decided to start my repayment. Like I can afford an extra 250 this time of year? HOLY S H I T. And they want me to pay it, they won't reverse it. I was like, Okay, but you'll have to wait til OSAP sends me money because I can freakin afford to pay you bastards back!
Anyway, sorry I never updated or anything, I've been totally avoiding the student posts because I feel so lost in space. Feels really good to rant though. Thanks!

I know the purple wire looks lame, it's actually not a decoration but it's securing the tree to the banister so the cats don't knock it over! We can't secure it to the ceiling because it's solid steel (apartment). I should have mentioned that, looking at the tree know it looks really awkward!

I think people who don't like tattoos now, won't in ten years, and those who do like them now, will like them still. A tattoo isn't really a trend to the individual, most people don't get tattoos because it's cool (or at least, they shouldn't).
For me, I've had my oldest one for 7 years and I still love it. It's meaningful, unique (I designed it myself) and all mine. I feel the same way about all of mine.
I think they can be trashy, or sexy, depending on the bearer. Mine aren't meant to be either, actually. I know my DH finds them to be very sexy on me, and I love his as well. But I didn't get them for him, I got them for me, and the only person they have to please is me. And they do!

I love the idea of getting reciprocal tattoos. In fact, DH and I have them ourselves! But I was totally against the idea of having his name on me and vice versa, because to me it was like a brand, like we were each other's property instead of equals.
So we got verses from our song tattooed on us. Mine is across my back ribs in a nice scriptive font, and DH's is across his shoulders in a more masculine font. Different verses for the parts of the song that suited us better (I can post pics if you want).
That was on our four-year anniversary, a year before our wedding. Now we are thinking of getting another set of tattoos, but again instead of names, DH will get the wedding date incorporated with a sort of tribal design, and I will get a verse from a book or poem, with the date on the bottom. It will be my 7th, and DH's 2nd tattoo.
Anyway, maybe that gives you some more ideas, I'm like you and don't really like the idea of a name, it's not my style at all. Hopefully you can find a middle ground that suits you both!
Also, about the hip tattoo, I wouldn't get one there if you plan on having kids. Tattoos move and stretch with your body and there's a good chance it will not look so nice after pregnancy.

I think they look lovely and it saves them from remembering the pain (if there is any, there never was for me) or a traumatic experience when they are older. Outside the house? Definitely, without question (at night).
As for inside, it's not that I don't feel "safe" when he's not here, I feel uncomfortable. I'm actually afraid of the dark, and am haunted by all the scary movies I've seen (weird, I know). So when DH isn't here, I get to thinking maybe the Ring girl is going to come out of the TV or the Grudge is going to get me. It's so stupid and I know that, but I can't help it. I even get weird showering when no one's here, and I have to cover up the TV in our bedroom at night. So I'm not afraid of robbers or rapists or anything, just fictional characters from horror movies. Okay, going to call a shrink now.

It's in April, and I'll probably still be in school then (thanks York strike), so I might do it. It's 100 pages, which if a little longer than a novel but mostly dialogue, so it's probably about equal.
I definitely want to do it, I've never wrote a script before, mostly because I write literary fiction and don't like a lot of dialogue, but I want to venture outside my comfort zone.

Here are my step-by-step instructions for downloading.
Anyway, the download program I use is called Utorrent. It's basically like Kazaa or Napster, but for movies. It's fantastic.
Now unlike Kazaa or Napster, you can't search WITHIN the program. You have to go to a site (I use Mininova and IsoHunt- google will find them) and search for them.
So download Utorrent and install it. Then search for VLC Media Player and download and install it (it plays almost any file and is basically the best media player. I used to use Windows Media Player or Winamp but found that many files wouldn't play on them. VLC is the best).
Then go to Mininova and do a search for your movie. Important things to know- Seeds are the people who are uploading the movie. The more seeds the better. I don't download any film with less than 10 seeds unless I'm desperate.
If you want to search for a TV show, say Desperate Housewives, the third episode of the second season, you'll search for "Desperate Housewives S02E03" S is the season, E is the episode.
Also, you may find a file that is RARed. That is a form of archiving, basically older uploaders use this because before this form of downloading became stricter, there were a lot of viruses. Now, there aren't any but people still use RAR files. You can either choose another torrent (the torrent is the stream of files you're downloading) or you can unRAR them using WinRAR. If you run into that, let me know, it doesn't happen a lot, but I can help you through it.
Also, if you decide to download more modern movies, the best uploaders are aXXo, FXG and FXM. Search for them for BRAND new movies, often before they are on DVD. When it says CAM after the torrent name, that's a camera version filmed in the theatre. Those are bad. You want DVDrips or LAB torrents. If it doesn't say, don't worry.
Try to read the comments on the torrent before you download, people will tell you if it's good or bad. If you have trouble for the first little while, I can send you the links to good torrents so you won't have to search.
Just make sure you don't exceed your bandwidth (the amount you can download per month) because that gets expensive!
-

Hey struedel. Now that you have uTorrent, go to
www.mininova.org. Do a search for what you want, and download the file that has the most "seeds" (people who are uploading the file).
uTorrent is the program that downloads, and Mininova (orIsoHunt or many others) are the sites that host the torrents (torrents are the files you want to download).
If you have any other questions, let me know. In the meantime, I'm going to try to find a PM I sent to someone that gives a lot of details on how to download.

I hit 45,075 today. I could end my novel in about 1000 words, and I have to come up with ways to sort of stretch it. I don't like doing that, I'm a fan of concise, precise literature, but I have a couple ideas for a few last minute twists.

We use lavender oil sometimes, if I can't sleep. We have a little tea light thing with a little bowl on top, and put some water and a few drops of oil in the top, and then light the candle, and the candle heats and distributes the oil.
We've also used rose oil and tea tree oil (or eucalyptus for when you're congested). Mostly we experiment with different kinds of oils, mixing and matching to see what works best.

I think Meredith is on a different level than Asheliegh or Typhanie. People who can't spell Meredith don't have an excuse.
I'm Kathleen but when by Katie when I was younger, I always got Katy, Kate, Kaite, Cady, and even Katee.
Given half a chance, people will misspell anything.
I am not a fan of unique spellings just for the sake of it, but some people love those spellings. I'm a fan of traditional, elegant names, spelled the way they were intended, but not too popular. Other people like it differently and that's their thing.
I always feel bad for the people in my classes with unusual names who get verbally raped by the professor who is old school and doesn't understand Magalee and Cyan and Sierra. I'd rather not put my kids through that.
But even as a Kathleen I have to specify "with a K". Very few people's names are just what you hear is what you get, with no possible variations.

Did you ever have a heated discussion with someone and then somebody else walks by and says, "Whoa, are you PMSing?" Or, "Wow, somebody needs to get laid!" I see the firefighters as the same as that. It's like saying we can't handle our own discussions and need to be sidetracked by sexy men to calm down. It's really sad and I hate to think that people will back down from their points because they think others want them to shut up (which is essentially what people are saying with the photos of firefighters).
It also trivializes the discussion completely, completely sending it off track and derailing it. It makes those involved in the discussion feel like nothing they say matters, or people aren't really reading.
I think the popcorn comments and "drama llama" crap is the same thing. If you have nothing to add to the conversation, why even post at all? Let the grown-ups do the talking and stop standing on the sidelines yelling "Fight! Fight! Fight!"
That's been boiling for a while and is obviously not addressed to anyone in particular. I just get frustrated when seeing countless photos of men when people are involved in a debate or even an argument. If you want the fight to stop/ troll to go away, don't feed the flames! Report the post and walk away.
