Hey Marieal,
I started with Couch 2 5k. I used it on my iPod touch. It's a great program to get you going.
I, too, would hide in the locker room during phys ed. I skipped gym to go to band. (nerd) When I became an adult, I met a girl who ran regularly, and blogged about it. Her posts were so poetic and passionate that I decided I wanted to try too.
Since I started running in March of 2010, I have run 5 5ks, 1 5 miler, 3 10ks, a half marathon, and the Tely 10. I truly believe that if I can do it, anyone can.
I suggest you get some good playlists. I have loads of stuff that I use. If you have an iPhone, Jog.fm is amazing. It is $2.99 but so worth it. This app syncs your playlist and will determine the songs you hear based on your pace!! Isn't that amazing?
Also, if you decide to go ahead with C25K, this blogger made up her own playlists to go along with each week, and she put in popular music! They're great.
http://www.kissmyblackass.org/podcasts/And of course,
http://www.rockmyrun.com. I swear by this.
Good luck, girl. I hope you decide to go for it. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made - to start running.

I have a few questions:
1. Are salaries for elementary teachers and secondary teachers different in Ontario? Elsewhere? Here in Newfoundland, they are the same.
2. Are some teachers getting paid for July and August? Here in Newfoundland, we are paid for the ten months we work, and we receive "holdback" pay in the summer - money which we have already earned. So we're not actually getting paid in the summer. Is it like this elsewhere?
3. So ETFO is currently banking sick days and you receive a payout upon retirement? That's so foreign to me. We have 7 sick days without a note, and if we take three in a row we need a doctor's note. We have sick leave, yes, for stuff like surgeries and other types of illness.
4. Are other teachers receiving paid vacation days? We don't, besides two weeks at Christmas and one at Easter (yes, we still have Easter holidays here).
Are most ETFO teachers in favor of losing the banked sick days? When is the vote taking place on this?

My husband plays in a band and they tour a lot. Last year he was gone for over half the year.
I go with them when I can, but I'm a teacher. The best way? Unlimited texting, FaceTime and Skype, shared cell phone plans, and lots of emails and Facebooking.
I'm really busy even when he is home (teaching all day and rehearsals/concerts in the evenings) but I have a group of friends who are in a similar situation - we meet twice a month for brunch.
It doesn't get easier, but it gets more bearable.

I booked a flight with Aeroplan to Montreal (from SJ) in fall 2009. At the AC counter, the agent saw that I had a FIVE HOUR layover in Deer Lake. He changed my flight so I would have a layover in Toronto instead (where there would be way more to do) and it would be shorter. No charge.
I've had good experiences with AC. I don't usually fly WestJet, and Porter has been great too - except it takes forever to get anywhere from St. John's, because there's 1237820958 stops before Toronto.
My only complaint - bring back free food, AC!!

Hello everyone,
My husband and I are talking about taking a week long trip somewhere. He's not into all inclusives, and I only get a week off school, so it shouldn't be too far. Also, we live in Newfoundland, so to get off the island is a big deal in itself. No trips to South America or Australia haha.
Anyway, what would you suggest? Giver!

I have two last names, no hyphen. All along I was going to keep his name but two weeks after we got married I decided to take his as well.
I have established myself professionally, but I like the idea of us being a family and sharing a name. I wanted to combine our two last names and making a new one, but he didn't go for that. He respected my decision either way - he was quite fine with me keeping my name, or taking his.

I got my appendix out when I was 29. I had had bouts of appendicitis three (!) times before but everyone thought it was an ovarian cyst. I ended up getting really sick and my boyfriend (now husband) had to force me to go to hospital because I thought it was H1N1 (rampant in NL at the time).
It took six weeks to recover. It was awful.
I had a serious episode with depression about seven years ago and ended up going off work. I couldn't get out of bed for weeks. It was just awful.

Great thread!
My Mom is super amazing, and I can think of lots and lots and lots of examples, but two primarily stick out in my mind:
When I was 29 I got my appendix out. My boyfriend (now husband) had to leave the country for work two days after my surgery, and couldn't get out of it. I stayed at my parents' place while he was gone, and my mom took amazing care of me while I was recovering. She was the best, taking care of her grown daughter.
The second - when I ran my first half marathon, her and my dad were cheering me on during various points of the race, and at the last 400 metres, she actually ran alongside me towards the finish line - that helped me keep going. She was so proud of me.
Come to think of it, my dad is amazing too.
<3 this thread is so sweet.
