Vivaldi I noticed you mentioned there is something inside you craving something different. A change. It sounds like you're open to the idea of change. Based on that I encourage you to consider the "10 year rule." This is something DH and I have been using for years when it comes to big decisions. Ask yourself which option you would prefer to have taken in ten years. Edmonton or Montreal. This might help...or it might confuse you more who knows but it's a good exercise that doesn't focus solely on a location but the overall experience.

Same friend of mine had an "adult toy box" which was super popular as well. I've seen it at a few social and they're always popular. Another cool one I've seen is a "dine around." Gift cards to a variety of local places so people to sample a variety of places. I think the gift cards ranged between 10 and 20 dollars and I think they were purchased with airmiles points.

I worked in the non-profit field in Winnipeg for years and WE even found it hard to get donations and we were a registered charity. It's really hard for businesses to see what they're going to get out of it. They really don't believe you when you tell them people will see their name and come to their business. What really happens is people see their name and think of them when they need a social prize. So if you have personal connections to local businesses work those first before going to random places. Also if you happen to know someone who works at a radio station, that can be helpful as well because they tend to have lots of random swag kicking around.
Also think outside the box. I'm a bridesmaid for someone this summer and they had their social in March. They had everyone in the bridal party and lots of friends and family donate two mini of booze and she put it all on a tiered cake plate rather than your usual texas mickie or "perfume raffle".
The biggest hit of the night though was the death by chocolate. She had about 20 to 25 varieties of chocolate in a basket. I sent her some stuff from here but she got a lot of it locally. People were falling all over themselves to put tickets in that one.

Not to sound totally bias but Switzerland is nice in July. We have chocolate factories, a statue of a giant eating babies, a 200 year old taxidermied St. Bernard and the Alps. Kind of an awesome place if you ask me. There is also a pesky Weddingbeller or two running around.
Another bonus is that you're in the middle of every where. It's super easy and direct to get on a train and head to Italy, France, Germany and Austria.

I recently made a strawberry balsamic jam and it's to die for. DH and I ate an entire jar in a weekend. We're not proud of that but it was so yummy. We put it on everything!!
1 pound (16 ounces) fresh or frozen strawberries, diced
3-4 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust according to sweetness of the berries)
2+ tablespoons balsamic vinegar (to taste)
In a saucepan over medium heat, bring strawberries, sugar, and balsamic vinegar to a boil. Turn down the heat and simmer for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until strawberries have thickened into a jam.

My Oma is selling her house in Edmonton. *cue ugly cry*
My moms mother passed away 26 years ago and my Opa remarried about a year later. My Oma is wonderful and kept things very much the way it was when she moved in. When she married my Opa she had her own full set of China (service for 18) she brought with her. My mom had her own full set of china (service for 18) that she got when she got married. So that leaves my moms mothers china. I'm the only granddaughter on this side of the family so the china that was my Maternal grandmothers was left for me. All of it. It's a huge amount of china.
Now that my Oma is selling the house and moving into a condo she would like for me see about getting my china or at the very least getting it closer to me. She would like me to look into getting it professionally packed. She would rather have it done professionally than do it herself. My brother will come and take it and put it in storage at his place in Lloydminster until I can some how get it from him.
Anyone know where I can start with this? Company recommendations? Who should I avoid? Average cost? The good the bad the ugly? I need all of it.

DH and I both use Avast virus scanner, we run crap cleaner and spybot search and destroy as well. We also exclusively use Chrome.
But the biggest thing is our network is locked down tighter than a nuns chastity belt. We also both use linux based alternative operating systems which helps as well. Now you don't need to go as far as a different operating system, that's over kill for your average computer user but network security is one of DHs jobs.
Also in case ALL of that fails all important stuff (wedding photos, my writing, DH's technical stuff etc.) is stored on an external hard drive. Just in case.
ETA: DH asked me to add that you should always limit the amount of malware, virus and spyware stuff you have on your computer. Less is more. If you have to many they eventually end up scanning each other. He's known people to have 5 or 6 of these kinds of programs and they basically are rendered useless.

Okay...just go with me on this recipe. It's a really cool way to do a version of glazed carrots. It's a huge hit in our house. I've played around with types of root beer for this recipe. I like to use the Artisan root beers as oppose to saw Barks. It all depends on how sweet you want your glaze to be.
Root Beer Carrots
One 12 ounce bottle of root beer
1/3 cup light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
2 pounds peeled baby carrots
2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme
In a large skillet, bring the root beer, sugar, cinnamon, cumin, cloves, and salt to a boil. Add the carrots. Return to a boil, cover, and cook for 5 minutes. Uncover and boil until tender, stirring occasionally, about 15 minutes. Most of the liquid should be gone and your carrots should look evenly glazed. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the thyme.

My name has been misspelled and mispronounced my entire life. Even by family members. And when you look at my name, it's not that hard to spell. It's a lot of repeated letters.
In a work environment, I will always correct people. Always. It's a matter of professionalism to me. If I can't trust you to get my name right what can I trust you with in a work environment?
I'm a little different with family members though. I basically give up on correcting them. My Dh's grandmother for the 8.5 years DH and I have been a couple has called me "Tiana" We stopped correcting her after the first year. There was no point.

I would scrap it only because sometimes DVD players won't/can't read burned disks for a bunch of different reasons (bad disk, bad burn, colour encoding etc.) And just because it works in your PC or DVD player doesn't guarantee it would work for someone else. Dh and I are currently living in Switzerland. DH is working for the Universal Postal Union which is a branch of the United Nations. He found the job through UNjobs.org. They have postings by field and by country. So I recommend you check them out if you have certain countries and fields of work in mind.
Previously I lived and worked in Canterbury for a summer working for an International English summer school. I found it online when looking for ESL jobs. Because I have an EU passport (I'm a German National) I didn't need a work visa.
DH works primarily in English. He speaks very little German whereas I am fluent in German so day to day life can be interesting.
As for our visas. They were provided to us by DHs place of work. They handle the cost and the paperwork. We are here on a diplomatic visa. However, because of my EU passport I can easily cross the border and work in an EU country no problem. I can work part time under my diplomatic visa if I choose to.
Because DH works for the UN we are taken care of really well. If we choose to have children here the HR department would take care of the paperwork to make sure our child gets their Canadian passport and citizenship. When Dh's job ends if we choose to come back to Canada they pay for our relocation back to Canada. They paid a portion of our relocation to Switzerland as well.
In regards to applying for a visa the process is easier if you have a job offer. You can still do it without one however there is less red tape.
Good luck!

DH and I have traveled quite a bit since moving to Switzerland because it's super easy to get places. We traveled when lived in Canada but not this much. We just got back from 6 days in London, previous to that we were in Milan for a few days. We've been to France and Germany quite a bit and travel Switzerland quite a bit.
We've learned a few things.
- As far as breakfast is concerned. Most hotels and hostels have kettles and mugs available either in the room or by request. Get some instant oatmeal at the grocery store and make those for breakfast. It's a cheaper way to do breakfast if it's not included with your room.
- Another way to save on food is to think outside the box. If you have a coffee maker in your room. Use it for more than just coffee. I've ramen in our hotel room coffee maker and soft boiled eggs.
- In London we paid to get into exactly one attraction the whole 6 days we were there and we booked our admission tickets online and saved money by doing that. Sure you can buy them at the venue but we got them for 4 pounds cheaper by doing that which in London, saving 4 pounds is a big deal.
- Don't be afraid to go off the beaten path. Yes is nice to have coffee in the shadow of the Domo in Milan but going a few streets over you'll save a few Euros on that coffee. Get it to go and sit on the steps of Il Domo.
- Speaking of getting food to go. It's cheaper in Europe to get food to go. So get your food and go people watching.
- Try to go in the "off season" its less crowded and things tend to be a bit cheaper. DH and I hit Zermatt (home to the Matterhorn) in the fall when it wasn't ski season. Things were cheap and empty. It's ski season in Switzerland right now and we're not going anywhere near Zermatt.
- Tourist cards. They can get you cheap admission to places, cheaper transportation, restaurant deals. We've generally gotten these to pay for themselves.

I've been bilingual my entire life. I learned German and English at the same time as a child. My french instruction in school was very sporadic. I went to German Immersion school so I took half a term of French in grade 4 because the school thought they would see if taking three languages in a day was a good idea. It wasn't. Then we moved to Newfoundland half through grade 5 I took a little french but retained so little of if from then to the end of grade 9. I didn't see the point. I was already bilingual and I had no interest in french.
Here are all the phrases I know in French.
1. Who cut the cheese?
2. Where is the library?
3. I want my book.
4. Free Prize inside.
5. Thank you
6. Hello
Now I will say this, when you're stuck in the french speaking region of Switzerland looking for a place to eat those phrases help you exactly not at all.

It seems I know how to pack up my entire life into two suitcases and a backpack but I don't know how to pack for a vacation. sigh. So I humbly come to you great minds of WB to help me.
DH is taking me to London for my birthday. YAY! We'll be there for 7 days. I have an incredibly bad habit of over packing and taking clothing with me that never gets worn and end up thinking, "why did I even pack that?" The last two trips I took to England it was summer and one of the trips I was working for a summer school so packing this time around will be different.
We're going to see a show on my birthday so I'm going to pick up a special "birthday outfit" sometime this week that matches the handbag I want to bring along. Having been to London as a tourist previously I know to bring comfy shoes, a bag/small backpack for the day out but that's about it.
What is reasonable of clothing, accessories etc for a 7 day trip?

Would you like the police to open, scan, read and keep record of all your mail for rest of your life and then charge you money for doing so? Because basically that's the purpose behind this bill just replace "mail" with "internet activity."
Your life can be as boring as humanly possibly but if this bill passes they'll still look at your stuff because they can. The email from your mom, the recipe your posted on WB and the birthday present you bought on amazon. All under the notion they MIGHT possibly stumble upon some illegal activity. People should be worried about this regardless of how boring they think their online presence is. It sets an incredibly dangerous precedent.

Dh and I don't do Valentine's Day. We do what we called "Discounted Negotiated Affection Day" on the 16. It has an 8.5 year history and came into being thanks to his inconsiderate roommate and a Fellini film.
We bought each other our gifts this weekend in Milan. DNA Day rules state the gifts if we choose to exchange them must be on sale. He got me a handbag and I got him a Dropkick Murphy's belt buckle.
Oh and LadyTatiana's patented V-Day tip: If you're going out for dinner or making a big special V-Day dinner. Have sexy time first, then eat. Trust me. You won't be full, you won't be tired for the wine and you'll feel like you've really earned your food. Also if you're going out by making the reservation later the restaurant will be less crowded. *Please note this tip can be applied to any special occasion*

I've eaten it. I've also bought it and prepared it at home. It's not in regular rotation in our meal plans but it's something I'm willing to make. It's cheaper than beef and better for you.
Honestly if someone were to just give you cooked horse on a plate, you can't really tell the difference between it and most red meat. Horse meat has less than 3% fat, is an excellent source of vitamin B12, and has significantly more iron than beef. Our neighbour told me her doctor told her to eat more horse meat when she was pregnant because of the high iron content.

1. Tourists. I hate tourists. Okay more specifically I hate obvious and bad tourists. They walk slowly, they don't pay attention to where they're going, they stop dead in front of you to gawk at something and then give you the stick eye when you accidentally run into them because they stopped dead.
2. People who walk slowly four abreast in train stations with all their ski equipment.
3. The use of the word "irregardless".
4. Ikea
5. When I ask for help finding something in a store and the clerk tells me the thing I'm looking for doesn't exist. I was flat out told by an associate at Canadian Tire once that there was no such thing as a non-stick wok. As far as he was concerned I had just randomly put two words together.
6. The people in the security line at the airport who don't think the rules apply to them. Or the people who hold up the line because they didn't think to get their stuff ready whilst they were waiting.
7. People who write in library books.
8. Women who think acting dumb/clueless is cute.
9. Being told my tattoos will harm my prospect of getting jobs. Ummm I don't know what kind of job I would be interview for if people could see them (one of them is on my upper thigh) during a job interview.
10. When people ask me "Oh what are you doing here?" when they run into me at say the grocery store. "Hunting rhinos! What do you THINK I'm doing in a GROCERY STORE!?!"
11. We moved to SWITZERLAND people NOT SWEDEN!!!!!!
12. Litter
13. When DH lists off the things he needs to do when I'm fairly certain he has no intention of doing anything of those things.
14. The question, "Well what do you do all day?"
15. Ikea...I know I said it already but it really really grinds my gears.

At Ten spa I totally recommend the Hamam (sp?) its a turkish bath and the most beautiful amazing relaxing experience. DH and I both really really enjoyed it. Worth every single penny. You float out of there feeling like a totally new person.
I had a mani and a pedi at Ten Spa and honestly, it was mediocre at best. It started chipping the next day.
Riverstone was really nice. The water massage thing they have there is great. Different than your traditional massage. I got a pedi there and it lasted a really long time. I even skated in a derby bout 5 days later and my toes still looked like I had just walked out of the spa.

I did our weekly grocery shopping the other day and it all came to 67 Swiss francs which is about 75ish Canadian dollars. That's all meals and some snacks. If you eat healthy and local here it's cheap to feed yourself. Processed food is expensive here. 1 frozen pizza can easily cost you 8 Canadian dollars. Where as fresh made that day pasta is 5 Canadian dollars. I'll take the fresh pasta please.
Now if you want things like beef, pork and chicken you shell out quite a bit of cash so we've adopted a fairly vegetarian diet. 50 Canadian dollars for 2 steaks made me want to move back home.

We didn't write them in the sense of we went off and wrote them by ourselves and had these elegant sonnets. No. Dh was very anti doing that because I am the writer and he was worried his would consist of "you're awesome and I promise to read your blog and make sure we always have the best wireless package. I'm surprised no one has posted about this considering it can/could effect how we not only use WB but the internet in general. Imagine logging on one morning and WB not being here without any warning because someone somewhere decided they didn't like what was posted here.
Yes these are American bills and pieces of legislation but they can effect the internet as a whole.
You might notice today that places like wikipedia, theOatmeal (a WB fave), icanhazacheeseburger (another WB fave), mozilla (search engine), wordpress (we have a lot of bloggers here), postsecret, reddit, and many many more have been blacked out in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) and other internet censorship acts.

They had a lot of trouble with the jury selection because it took place in a rather small city so a lot of people knew the defendant, the victim and/or their families.
My brother tried to tell them it would be a financial hardship because he worked salary and commission and he was paying for his flight training at that point. But that didn't get him out of it.
He the trial gone on a few days longer than it did he would have been paid.
My brother received court appointed counseling afterwards, or at the very least it was offered to all the jurors I am not entirely sure if he went (I was living in England at the time) due to the nature of the crime and the evidence they had to see.

My initials weren't made of but my name was made fun of in elementary school and in junior high. It wasn't until I started going by "T" in high school that it stopped. I took the stance of "yeah lets see you make fun a single letter you jerks!"

Thanks everyone for your insight. We're not entirely sure what to do at this point. Oma is a very practical woman and would spend the rest of the after life haunting me for spending a tonne of money just to come to her interment (there will be no funeral.) But at the same time I want to be super selfish and go anyway.
If I do go, it would just be me going not both of us. So that makes it a little easier financially.
It's a big scary not easy decision but thank you for helping with this part of my research.
