The point of a stag and doe is to raise money for the couple for their wedding, right? So really, if the couple is the one organizing it or asking people to come, I don't see the harm.
What's the difference between someone else asking or the bride and groom?
Having said that, I know someone who is telling people they're not coming to the wedding if they don't come to the stag and doe. And also asking friends to help run the stag and doe so that she (the bride) can party with the wedding party. And the money isn't going toward the wedding. It's going toward her pre-wedding festivities.
Personally, I don't care who asks. They're really common around here and I've yet to run into anyone who thinks that's tacky.
To the OP --- if it's offensive to you, just politely decline.

You claim the portion of your home that you actually use to run your business. So if it's an office, it's the square footage.
Sorry but I don't see why you're making this a) more complicated than it actually is and b) more of a big deal than it is.
Why should you be permitted to deduct business-use-of-home expenses for time when you're not working?
Seems reasonable to me.

I know I sound like a complete bee and completely insensitive. I just hope people understand where other are coming from too.
I suppose no job is a walk-in the park and it irritates me when so many people complain and are able to just walk off the job or negotiate things like that when there are others who have zero control over what happens.
I sincerely apologize if I've offended anyone or hurt any feelings.

Ummm how am I not owning my choice of profession? I don't take holidays during tax season even though it would be nice. I don't take holidays during month-end or year-end. Although, that would also be nice. I own the fact that I'll constantly be taking courses for school and keeping myself up-to-date with current practices / law / etc. I wish I didn't have to but that's the nature of the business.
I don't complain about any of that.
Am I peeved I am not getting a raise while others are? Darn right! And I'll continue to complain about it!
However, that doesn't mean that I'm not owning my choice in profession and the crappy things about it.

I'm bringing up salaries because that's part of the post --- a wage freeze.
Why should teachers get a raise when there are many people experiencing a wage freeze?
Reason why I'm not a teacher --- I don't have the passion for it. I wouldn't be good at it. Not my cup of tea.
Am I envious they get raises? Darn right I am! Am I envious you get to bank sick days? Darn right I am! Does that I mean I want to be a teacher? No.
For the record, I don't think teachers are lazy. I think they're hard-working and a lot of the time, passionate about their jobs.
I'm merely wondering why teachers are so valued over other professionals? I am a professional and nowhere near as valued.
Angelaeve --- there are LOTS of people who are over-worked and under-paid. Doesn't that describe most of the current Canadian workforce?

MrsMac --- you're right but can you not take a day off? Can you not take holidays????
I know there are certain times of the year when I "can't" take holidays. I mean I could but it would be seriously frowned upon (ie. end of month or fiscal year). But I KNOW when I can take holidays are plan accordingly. So apply that to a teacher. I know I get July and August off. Okay so I play my vacations accordingly.
When "stuff" come up, I adjust accordingly. I need a couple sick days? I take them. I need to take a couple vacation days because my kids are sick? I take them.
How are teachers different?

And what I mean by gods is that teachers and nurses seem to be some of the MOST important people in the country.
People think they should get whatever they want due to the nature of their jobs.
I just don't get why one profession deserves more respect that another? Obviously compensation levels (meaning how MUCH you make, not the breakdown of how you got there) are something completely different.
I help get money for the hospitals. I get money from those people who use our services and feel they don't have to pay for them (and we're not talking cheap services, either). So I help bring money into the hospital. I help fund it. Why am I less important or made to feel less important????? Do I not deserve a raise for my good work?

miss_martini --- I work in a hospital. The only reason people think front line staff are the first to go is because they're the only ones making the news.
In our departments (about 750 employees) we have cut several employees from every level of employment --- from managers to secretaries to technical staff.
People assume that cutting front line staff is going to affect patient care but it's not always the case. Sometimes there are wayyyyyyyy too many front line staff working and cuts are the way to fix it. Why pay someone $35 / hour PLUS pension PLUS benefit (which works out to about $50 - $60 / hour) when there's no work to do????
And believe me ... front line staff make pretty decent money and have pretty decent benefits and pension plans --- again I know this from first-hand experience.

Oh and I'm sorry a sick BANK? Isn't sick time for when you're actually sick?
Sorry but what a crock of poop.
First, so many people don't have jobs; many qualified, hard working people. There are people who do and they complain that they will lose their sick bank and should have a wage freeze?
Welcome to today's economy! What should make teachers exempt from feeling the effects of today's economy?
What I take from stuff like this is that people are placing more value on a teacher than someone else. Every person's job is important in one facet or another. Why should importance be placed so highly on one group and so low on another?
I get pretty upset by this becaues it feels like people feel like administrative jobs are pointless and the people doing the jobs are useless. But front-line workers are GODS and deserve to be showered with unending praise, money and perks.

Yes but the taxes are for the 2010 tax year. It doesn't matter if the bill came 40 years from now. It's the year in which the expense was INCURRED --- not when the bill was received.
If you get the property tax credit (and ensure you actually qualify for it ... many people put it on their taxes but it makes no difference in the end because their income is too high) ... if you qualify, you can do an adjustment to your 2010 taxes for it. But you can't claim the 2010 expense in 2011.

Short answer --- yes, you have to file taxes.
Because the gov't typically has copies of your income, they will usually send a request to file if you owe them money. If you are likely to get a refund, they usually leave you alone.
As for having no income, you may qualify for a GST credit or medical supplements (if you are on OAS).
So it's a good idea to file.

All you need is to manage your money.
You know when it's coming in and when money is due to come out. Plan accordingly.
My work could screw around with my pay schedule all they want but it wouldn't bother me in the least.
When you are paid on the 8th, that money is for the payments that come out on the 15th. When you are paid on the 22nd, that's for payemtns that come out on the last day of the month / 1st.
Pretty simple solution and nothing to get irritated / upset over.

Just for clarification --- She discussed your pregnancy with your co-workers but she was not your health care provider. Does she know then personally? Did she call them specifically to discuss you? Did she access your health records? I'm all for privacy especially while pregnant but I just don't get what happened (I just don't understand what she did and what this had to do with her job).
Sorry I'm just confused as to why she was fired.
I work at a hospital. If I was talking to someone about my SIL's pregnancy, she would have no grounds to get me fired. If I accessed her medical records in our system or discussed her records, I could definitely be fired. But if I talked about her pregnancy ... I dunno. I just don't get it.
I think an e-mail would be your best bet in this situation, though.

Let's say my husband owns a finance company. To protect our family, he transfers everything to my name since the business is a high-risk one. After a while, he committs fraud and steal from his clients. I had no idea. Why should I lose everything because he's a d-bag???

They are taking tax off based only on that income. So when it's all added together it usually will bump you into a higher tax bracket or increase the amount of taxable income.
When taxes are deducted from your income, it's taken off according to that income only. It does not take off tax according to all of your income because how would they know what your total income is?!?!
I would ask them to take off an extra $30 - $50 per pay.

It says you cannot cross the left side of the ROAD ... if I drive past a spot, I'm on the right side. If I back-up, I'm still on the right side.
To me that says you cannot enter from the left LANE. Not the left SIDE. So you cannot turn left into a parking spot.
But a PP asked the RCMP and they indicated it wasn't illegal so the interpretation anyone uses to make it illegal is wrong.

I will usually back in and especially at work in the parking garage.
Reasons being:
- I drive a van. It's a big vehicle and easier to drive straight out instead of backing out.
- It's a ton safer to drive out since a bigger vehicle has bigger blind spots
- The parking garage is a tight squeeze getting in and out. I back in so I'm not doing a 20-point turn to get out of the spot.
- People speed through the parking lot at crazy speeds. I'm more likely to see someone coming if I'm facing out than in.
But I guess I need to ask, what's the difference between taking the time to back in or taking the time to back out?? Should someone like me be irate with you for wasting my time while you back out of the spot?
No. Sorry but I think you and your husband are being irrational.

The box it comes it? Erm, is that recyclable????
As for the grinds, they're all contained to the pod. Making coffee at home seems to have just as much waste as a tassimo / keurig.
As for the cost, I don't find it's a ton more expensive depending on the type of coffee you drink.
For us, it's a ton cheaper than brewing evena a half pot of coffee since there's no waste. But if people drink enough coffee as to not waste the pot, it's probably cheaper to just make a pot.
I think the waste factor is about even.

You're worried about waste yet go out and buy coffee.
Here's a list of their waste:
- filter used to brew the coffee
- package the coffee comes in
- coffee grinds
- cup and lid
ALL that makes it to the garbage can.
Keurig / Tassimo waste:
- K-cup / T-disc
To me, it's more wasteful to BUY coffee than make it at home. No?

I know how you feel, Bella. Our kids rooms are right next door and I can assure you that they kids sleep more soundly than we think.
In 7 months, my son's screaming has only woken my daughter once. And she's never woken him up.
The trick is consistency. You have to pick a plan and stick to it. If you quit because it's easier to just let her sleep with you, she'll know you're not serious.
As for her being scared, we give our daughter a glowstick. She hangs onto it and sleeps with it.
But I completely get that you don't want to deal with it at 2am. Our kids sound like similar sleepers --- crappy ones haha Definitely be consistent and firm. No means no.

Easy solution --- stop letting her! She will likely fight it. She may yell. She may scream. But eventually she'll learn that she needs to stay in her room and bed.
Just keep taking her back to bed. Your daughter is almost 4. She should understand the concept of staying in your bed by now.
If my daughter comes into our room, we just take her back to her bed, tuck her in and tell her to go back to sleep.
