I'm another who went back to grad school in my late 20s, after being out of school for 5 years previously. I had always kind of intended to go back and do my Masters, but it just took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do. It turned out to be a great decision for me as I had some fantastic experiences while at school and am now in a much better job that I love.
As far as being older goes, I think it's not so much about the age difference, but more about where you are in life. For me, I was married with a step son, so I had more family responsibilities and just wasn't interested in partying, which some people did a lot of. That being said, there are plenty of serious students of all ages, especially at the graduate level, and I still was able to make friends with common interests in my classes. I even had a few younger friends who said they appreciated my perspective on things since I'd been out in the world working etc. and they hadn't done that yet. All that to say, you are sure to find people you connect with, regardless of your/their age!

165 minutes for me for May 17. I am not getting as much time for working out in these days as I have a work project that is taking up 2-3 evenings a week. It's a pain! On the bright side, at least we've been having good enough weather for hiking/walking/cycling!

If you have increased your weight training, you could be adding muscle, which would account for the lack of change in your weight. Keep in mind too that you're only a month in, so don't feel too discouraged!
10 lbs in a month is totally doable if you are committed! Now that you are exercising regularly, really focus on your diet. What are you eating now? And bad diet habits you could give up? Can you increase your water intake?

I got a quote for disability insurance and I'm just wondering how it compares to what others have. I don't have any group insurance through work so need to purchase privately.
This policy is through RBC. The quote is $1,100 annually for a $1,500/month net income. I also have the option to add a cost of living adjustment (so that the payment is indexed to inflation) for $150/year and a future income option (to allow an increase in the benefit by up to $1,000/month) for $275/year.
Should I shop around more, or does this look good?

We had our wedding OOT and we provided one night accommodations for our wedding party (the night before the wedding when we asked them to be there for the rehearsal). We did that instead of getting them a gift. They paid for their own rooms the night of the wedding.
Half of our wedding party was from OOT (one on each side). One of the girls plus my sister and her BF plus another friend attending the wedding all stayed with us the week or a few days prior. It was a full house

I know some people don't like invites/STDs by email, but maybe you could email it to the local people and mail to the OOT people?

I think whatever you can do to encourage your child to be interested in the world around them is key. I think learning ultimately is all about wondering "why" and looking for the answer, and trying new things to see what they are like. So even doing things like when they ask you questions, figuring things out together (looking up information, trying out an experiment, etc.) and encouraging them to try new experiences and activities are all really important.
I also think role modelling, the same way you have talked about with other things like being active, is important. Do you and DH talk about things you have learned/want to learn? Do you ever take classes or workshops to improve your skills or try new things? All of these could be great examples.
I know you asked about this sort of in the context of school and academic achievement, but I also think it's important to keep in mind that a love of learning is not necessarily the same thing as a love of school. Some kids will do really well in school and love it, and others may not have the same academic abilities. That doesn't mean that they can't love learning. They just might not love learning the way they have to do it in school. I think for kids like that, it is even more important to find other ways, outside of school, that they can continue to learn and develop and build confidence. That might be sports, outdoor activities, something computer-related, drama, art, etc. So it's important to look at the whole range of different ways and types of learning in that sense.

240 mins for me for the week.
I'm sure I'll have less next week as it's supposed to basically rain all week and don't cycle to work in the rain, so that will cut my time down by quite a bit. I might be able to get in an extra workout in the evening though.

Interesting topic. In general I would say that I agree. Like you have said ZB, I generally consider myself a pretty confident person and feel that I am quite capable at work. However, I have been told many times in the past that I undersell my skills and abilities and need to do a better job promoting myself. So I think it's maybe less so about the actual level of confidence and more about self-promotion if that makes sense? I think men are more likely (in general of course) to promote themselves to others, whereas women are more likely to think they are bragging or overly confident or whatever.
On the bright side, in the last year and a bit in my new job, I work with two amazing, smart, super confident women, and they have really encouraged me to learn, do new things, etc. It has really helped me value my skills and abilities, and being in consulting has helped me learn to sell them a lot more, so I think my attitude now is a lot different than it was say 5 years ago.

Do you have an android phone? It doesn't matter who your service provider is, you can download apps for android from the android app store (now called the Play Store). You can search from your phone or online.
Here are a few I have that I like:
Mobile apps for online services I use: Facebook, Skype, Twitter, Goodreads, Sparkpeople, hotmail, google reader
Fun & games: Angry birds, Jewel Maze, Andoku (sudoku puzzles), google sky map, spider solitaire, tap tap revenge
Useful: Note everything (a notepad app), My tracks (for tracking runs/hikes/bike rides), grocery tracker (for grocery lists)
Info/news: the weather network, CBC news
Those are the main ones I use.

I have had many friends living here tell me to look into childcare early as options are limited and waiting lists can be long, so I started doing some research today. We will be looking for childcare at 12 months, and we'd really like to put our child in a licensed facility (as opposed to a day home). We also really need somewhere that is close to home or work (basically within walking distance) or on the way between the two as we don't have a car and don't plan to get one.
I just went through the whole database of licensed childcare facilities near us. There is 1 (one!!!!) out of the 12 or 15 that we consider close enough that takes kids at 12 months, and the location is really not ideal as it's the wrong direction from work. All the rest start at 18 months.
This is so frustrating! Why, when most people have a leave of a year, do centres not take kids at 12 months?? I guess what we may end up doing is using a day home for the first 6 months or so and then moving to a centre (unless we found a day home that we really loved I guess). That wouldn't be the end of the world, but it's just frustrating to have such limited options, and I had no idea that this was going to be such a big challenge.
This is more of a vent than anything else, but I'm also curious as to what others have done, and whether this is an issue in other locations as well.

We are looking to rent a cottage for a week this summer (July) and are looking at either NB or PEI. We are looking for a place right on the water, and the water must be warm enough for swimming (i.e. not the Bay of Fundy!). We'd prefer a place that had direct water access rather than access to a crowded public beach (non-crowded public beach is ok though).
Any suggestions? I'd love to hear about places you've been that you've loved!

ZB - just seeing this now. Good for you, so glad the interview went well! I will be thinking of you on Tuesday and wishing you good luck.
It sounds like a really exciting opportunity for you. I have often jumped into things that I feel un/under qualified for in my working life. It can be really scary, but I have found that usually I am under-estimating my own skills and experience and I am able to learn as I go and pull things off pretty well. It's a wonderful way to stay engaged in your work and to continuously learn on the job. And of course, this woman obviously feels that you have the skills to do it or she wouldn't have asked you to apply!
I will be looking for your update

No ultrasound booked yet, I had a doctor's appointment on Friday and she put the requisition in, so I should get a date soon. Can't wait!
There may be a strike of health workers here (strike date is April 25) and I was worried about that delaying the ultrasound if it happens, but I just realised that our maternal/child hospital here is a separate entity (not part of the same health district going on strike) so I don't think services there would be affected. That's my hope anyways!
Generally I am feeling good these days. Belly is starting to get bigger than my regular pants can handle so I need to get myself some maternity clothes this week for sure

However, we also have 4 computers in the house (2 laptops and 2 desktops), which we do also use to watch tv (downloaded or live streamed) - the two desktops are in DSS's room and the kitchen, so I guess I should really count those as tvs. I have to say that I do like being able to watch something in the kitchen while I'm making supper or something.

I do see the advantage of having 2 tvs in the house if you have kids though. If we had the space (like a rec room or den or something, not the bedroom), we would have kept our old tv when we got the new one.
